Saved By Vinyl is pleased to announce the release of the new split 7” EP from Lab Coast and Extra Happy Ghost. They are both from Calgary, and after a string of cdrs, cds, and tapes, this marks the band’s first appearance on vinyl. This release will be the start of a series of split 7”s by Calgary bands on this label.
Lab Coast was formed in 2008 after a first burst of recordings, which eventually became their first album, Wilding (“a ramshackle channelling of 1990s junk-pop.” Jesse Locke, Weird Canada). That was David Laing and Chris Dadge, and at this point Dice Parks and Monty joined the band, on bass and drums, respectively, completing the band line-up. The band writes and records new material at all times, resulting in a bunch of short, hooky tunes, recorded warmly, and at home. Our Friends at Suitcase Orchestra said, “this is a band who sound like they just love playing together, while managing to find, seemingly by happy coincidence, that something extra – pin-sharp melody – in their music.”
Following on the heels of the last years celebrated how the beach boys sound to those with no feelings, extra happy ghost!!! is back with two new gauzy, mournful, pop songs, conjured up from the soltitude of a Calgary apartment. While both songs draw from a variety of influences – think 60’s psych meets Eric’s Trip, meets Martin Rev, meets some source of digital drone – they remain uniquely ehg!!! The Straight calls their sound “a weirdly lo-fi exercise in tension dripped indie rock,” while Weird Canada describes it as, ”eerie pop songs crafted by someone sailing toward their creative zenith.” The Music is by Matthew Swann, played by himself, and with his friends.
The album will be available October 2010 with a download card.
