Last year, TUNS, the ‘supergroup’ comprised of Chris Murphy (Sloan), Matt Murphy (Super Friendz, Flashing Lights), and Mike O’Neill (Inbreds), released their acclaimed self-titled debut album which was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize. Today, the band returns with a new single, “When You’re Ready”, whose beautiful three part harmonies and slide guitar are being used in multiple episodes of upcoming CBC / Comedy Central show Crawford.

“When The Beatles were starting the recording sessions for what was to become Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band their label needed a single, so they used ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and ‘Penny Lane’, which meant they would not be on the album,” says Chris Murphy. “Producer, George Martin, considered it to be one of the biggest mistakes of his life. TUNS recorded ‘When You're Ready’ during the same recording sessions as our 2016 self titled LP but left it off the album and we would like to think that George Martin rolled over in his grave.”

The dysfunctional family comedy Crawford, which is created by Trailer Park Boys writer Mike Clattenburg and TUNS’ own Mike O’Neill, will drop on CBC’s online player at cbc.ca/watch and the CBC TV app on Groundhog Day, February 2. The Show stars John Carroll Lynch, Jill Hennessy, Kyle Mac, Alice Moran, and Daniel Davis Yang.

Today, the band is also a sharing a live video of “Mind Over Matter” filmed in the basement of Royal Mountain Records for the video web series Custom Kitchen.

MORE ABOUT TUNS

TUNS is an exciting new band of equals, of collaborators, of experienced veterans who sound as exuberant as ever. Their debut self-titled album is full of power pop with intricate melodies and electrifying rock’n’roll written with a deep appreciation for songcraft. It’s like a music geek’s version of fantasy baseball, a band that could feature Paul McCartney, Pete Townshend, and the Attractions’ Pete Thomas, with Alex Chilton and The Jam’s Paul Weller throwing in song ideas.

The first time anyone knew that TUNS existed was their first gig at Massey Hall in October 2015, part of an all-star benefit show organized by Hayden. The band’s internal mutual appreciation dates back 20 years to when the Inbreds and Super Friendz — with whom Chris was playing drums during a Sloan hiatus — toured together, a friendship only now coming to musical fruition.

Come cry with The Olympic Symphonium in their official video for “Comedy”, the third single from their forthcoming album, Beauty In The Tension, out February 9 via Forward Music Group.

The song revolves around the idea of political correctness. What is acceptable to say to someone? What's not? Is that person going to think this joke is funny? Is this even a joke? It's about ignorance.

"It's about lack of respect. It's about the thickness of skin. It's about timing. It's about comedy. What's the joke and who's the joker? I've looked at jokes from both sides now" explains songwriter Nick Cobham.

Self-directed and produced for $40, the video is a collaborative piece with Fredericton-based filmmaker F. Chris Giles. The band knew when making this that crying on demand was going to be difficult with a crowd so they enlisted their friend Patrick Lewis, a local chef who also plays keyboards on the album, to make wings with some insanely hot sauce. Turns out their tolerance was higher than anticipated so the members of the band ended up chugging and snorting a variety of ghost pepper, habanero, and cayenne pepper sauces.

Due out next month, Beauty In The Tension is the result of rural isolation, small comforts, and the discovery of two pairs of Dark Side Of The Moon pajama pants.

For six days last winter, Nick Cobham, Kyle Cunjak, Dennis Goodwin, and Graeme Walker holed up in the legendary Old Confidence Lodge studio in Riverport, Nova Scotia to focus on 13 new compositions. Working long days with the help and stamina of engineer Diego Medina, the band laid down a batch of songs that were road-tested and ready to be captured in this magical Oddfellows Hall-cum-studio.

Delicious home-cooked meals and harmony vocals were provided by Jennah Barry, a fellow resident of Nova Scotia's south shore, and additional instrumentation was provided by Michael Belyea (Jenn Grant), Tim Crabtree (Paper Beat Scissors), and composer / arranger Drew Jurecka. Sonic inspiration came from Pink Floyd, guitarmonies, and Chicago power-ballads.

Rising Toronto post-punk four-piece FRIGS today announce their debut full-length album, Basic Behaviour, due out February 23 via Arts & Crafts. The band also shares the new track “Talking Pictures” and announce an expansive 27-date North American tour. Album art, tracklist, tour dates, and more information below.

"‘Talking Pictures’ was a turning point in the development of Basic Behaviour. There was a starkness to it that really resonated with us at the time, becoming a catalyst for a new style of songwriting that would eventually finish the record,” recalls vocalist Bria Salmena. “Lyrically, it is about the need to be stimulated. It was written during a period where I felt a lack of both external and internal encouragement, preventing me from thinking freely or creatively. Falling into a void of routine, I was distracting myself from real life experiences, and those experiences, once examined, seemed only filtered through interactions with technology and social media. In writing this song, I attempted to explore this void and my distracted state in hopes of losing any numbness I felt in my day-to-day life."

Basic Behaviour, FRIGS’ debut, self-produced full-length, was written and recorded over a 16-month period, split between two locations: the band’s home studio and Union Sound Company in the east end of Toronto. As much as the lyrical subject matter within the record reflects personal experiences of frontwoman Bria Salmena, the album is a product of years of self discovery as a unit. Recording at home allowed the band to take the time to explore their sound, experimenting with sonic textures and production, and meticulously re-working their material. These sessions proved to be invaluable in creating a sound unique to FRIGS. However, a degree of positive urgency was deemed necessary in order to finalize the process. Working with engineer Ian Gomes, FRIGS embraced the limitations of third-party studio time and completed the record with a sense of immediacy. The resulting contrast between these two approaches in recording creates an end product that is at once stark, chaotic, reflective, and manic, ultimately forming the core of Basic Behaviour’s identity.

FRIGS is made up of Bria, Duncan, Lucas, and Kris. The band pairs the raw, emotional grunge of PJ Harvey with the immersive, psychedelic post-punk of early Sonic Youth. With each member bringing a unique set of influences, FRIGS create a sound that is hard to pin down and an impression that’s unshakable. Led by the force of Bria’s vocals, the band has earned a reputation for putting on a hypnotic and visceral live performance. Embracing the mercurial and experimental, their shows are built upon instinct; a vocal growl can unexpectedly give way to a hushed whisper; languid drones boil over into guttural and searing tones.

Starting in March, FRIGS hit the road for an expansive North American tour, which includes dates in Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Toronto, SXSW, and more. All dates below.

PRAISE FOR FRIGS

“...the band mix ferocity with doom and atmospheric gloom, all played with their signature somewhat broken sound...If this is a taste of what's to come from FRIGS, consider our appetites well whetted” - Exclaim! 9/10

“Vicious slabs of noise are offset against open-ended guitar notes reminiscent of Deerhunter and Preoccupations” - DIY

“Salmena's vocal emphasis flips between gruff and sweet, and the pace moves from militant, atonal power rock to a woozy, notably powerless standstill” - The FADER

“Think sludgy, scuzzed-out post-punk awash in psychedelic feedback and the grunge-hewn emotional ferocity of singer Bria Salmena. It's visceral. It spits.” - Noisey

“...led by vocalist Bria Salmena, whose affecting brood places FRIGS in the same canon as other emotive, female-led indie outfits—think Angel Olsen, Torres, Weyes Blood, et al. And they’re of that same caliber, too.” - Nerdist
