Post-classical composer and pianist Jean-Michel Blais has announced the release of his sophomore album Dans ma main, due out May 11 on Arts & Crafts. Blais has developed a seamless fusion of neoclassical piano and minimalist electronics, finding common ground between gorgeous piano rhapsodies and the subtly emotional qualities of classic IDM. Blais has created an album that stands as a unique document in the pantheon of contemporary piano composition both in its timbral diversity and incorporation of improvisation. Dans ma main follows his debut Il, which reached #1 on Billboard’s Classical chart in Canada and was included in TIME Magazine’s best albums of 2016, and a collaborative EP with the Grammy-nominated producer CFCF, Cascades.

Following the stand-alone singles “blind” and “roses”, Blais has now shared the album’s title track “dans ma main”.

Blais explains the influences behind the track: “‘dans ma main’ is the incipit from a Hector de Saint-Denys Garneau’s poem. In my hand, the broken end of all paths. Addressing his own solitude, the writer speaks about everyone’s universality. Beside fallen, empty, lost and distant incertitudes, the beginning of all presences, the first step of any company, lays broken in my hand. Like pieces of an unclear puzzle, a melting mirror, hope lays right there, into our singular hands, with which we love, we fail, we pray, we steal, we give, we try, we pay, we pluck, we muff, we scratch, we touch, we play, we hold each other’s hands.”

Dans ma main is an expansive album of post-classical piano with strands of electronic detail. Blending his conservatory skill and precise pop sensibility with synthetic accompaniment, Blais creates unique environments where the piano’s intimacy can be subtly disrupted at any time.

Largely composed in one week of open exploration, Blais comes closer to the improvisational source of his writing, painting impressionistic stories within the fluid, indefinite outlines of dreams. Dans ma main rolls like clouds of nostalgic fog blown away on a clear wind, at once recalling and signifying the end of Il, his critically acclaimed 2016 debut album.

By contrast, Il was written and recorded by Blais over two years, culled from rolls of accumulated experimentation into an enchanting, unignorable arrival. Il unearthed an unknown musical imagination, with overwhelmingly intimate compositions cloaked in the romantic din of Montreal city noise.

On Dans ma main, tempted by a tangent first explored on Cascades, his collaborative EP with Grammy Award nominated electronic producer CFCF – born from a featured performance at 2016’s Red Bull Music Academy – Blais steps out with an artistic statement that both reaffirms and refutes his post-classical stature. The disparate universes within Dans ma main are so seamlessly entwined that they appear borderless.

The first single, “roses”, is a binary journey, softly oscillating between despair and hope. Oblique turns meet familiar resolve, as warm chords reference Radiohead’s “Pyramid Song”, and Eric Carmen / Celine Dion’s “All By Myself”, in sharp counterpoint to Rachmaninov’s Concerto No. 2 – an unexpected, but intentional cross-hatching of high- and low-art. Its emotional arc – optimistic and funereal – closes soundly with the glint of cinematic strings.

The pulsating and elastic “blind” captures the grace with which Blais traces this genre dance. “Built as a subtle transition from acoustic to electronic, the piece blends styles, deconstructs categories, pushes back boundaries alongside a spectrum reflecting our human potential to self-transcendence,” Blais describes. “Might we be blind at night, at least we aren’t deaf.”

Borrowing imagery from the words of singer-songwriter Safia Nolin on “igloo”, Blais’ interprets the lonely nights where, “wandering like an amnesic ghost,” one can find oneself within its own shadowy reflections, a nostalgic incursion into a person’s vintage recollections.

Yet perhaps in the album’s most unexpected turn, on closer “chanson”, Blais reveals his own hidden falsetto, trilling like adjacent keys in a nearly wordless lilt. Ironically, the only discernible meaning he sings: “I speak.” Blais presents the human voice as another instrument, resting vague in its definition, so emphasizing the listener’s active role in projecting and interpreting itself. As Blais says, “What one hears becomes more relevant and telling than what is said.”

The result, as Blais’ body of work unfurls, is the creation of a new musical forum where freshly sounded notes bounce back instantly with the magic and wisdom of shared space. Dans ma main captures but one moment of this infinite lineage, but with it comes the reminder of all the energy we hold in our own hands, in this moment.

In anticipation of his Hold EP set for release tomorrow, Rich Aucoin shares a new track titled “The Dream” which saw its broadcast premiere this past week via The Strombo Show. Highlighted by dreamy synths and an insistent baseline, Aucoin comments:

“‘The Dream’ is a song about the contentment we can feel at an individual level when daydreaming or imagining a different world. It’s not about the achieving of making that world come to reality but looks at the various therapeutic benefits from such an endeavour. Whether it be imagining a time where you are not heartbroken, in an estrangement, or in conflict with the changes in your life, that power to picture yourself beyond the given moment is a useful tool for accepting the way things are and getting to that new spot, The Dream.”

The Hold EP is a stark contrast to the short high-tempo songs from Aucoin’s previous release, hinting toward a rebirth. Tracks like “Release” and “The Middle” have earned acclaim from the likes of Noisey, Paste Magazine, and Exclaim! – showcasing his undeniable ability to transform and manipulate sound. Just as his last album led him on a tour across Canada while raising money for childhood leukemia research, fans can expect nothing less this time around.

Aucoin will kick off his fifteen-date PRESS ON tour on March 26. Unlike a traditional tour, he will be bicycling from city to city, raising awareness for mental health by donating 100% of proceeds to Mental Health America and The Canadian Mental Health Association. Aucoin will be joined by bandmates in each city as he pedals alone across the deserts, mountains, and forests of America.

At each show, fans can expect a joyous celebratory event – his positive life-affirming shows have often been described as a natural antidepressant. Fans who are unable to attend are encouraged to donate to Aucoin’s crowdrise campaign. See below for a full date listing!

With their new album, Sweet Old Religion, Pharis & Jason Romero return, literally, from the ashes. Since the release of their last album, the JUNO Award winning A Wanderer I’ll Stay, the musicians and celebrated instrument makers at J. Romero Banjo Co. had taken a year-long sabbatical from touring and recording to welcome their second child, build some banjos, and tear down their house in Horsefly, BC, to build a new one with the help of their local and extended community. But, as they worked to build their new home a fire came in the night to claim their workshop. The Romeros found themselves surrounded by the community that came to support them.

“I think being ‘pushed to the edge’ is a perfect way of of describing how that summer felt. The day after the fire, support just started pouring in,” says Pharis. “It was overwhelming, this sense of receiving when we had absolutely nothing to give other than love and thanks.” And in the midst of the chaos of building and rebuilding, taking care of children, and feeding everyone, Pharis says, “music and songwriting were hovering at the edge but never came inside. There was no space to just sit and be and let thoughts, melodies, and ideas ferment.” These experiences and the growing sense of gratitude would soon be connected and drawn together through music, becoming Sweet Old Religion, Pharis & Jason’s first album made up of entirely original songs.

“Just weeks after everyone left, all the music, all of the songwriting, it just began to flow immediately as if a tap was opened,” says Pharis. “There was suddenly this space for all those months of really big feelings–having our son, dealing with loss and change, and receiving so much love and support–to be gathered into this big swirl of ideas, feelings, and melodies. It just all started coming out like crazy.” The record’s opening track and title of the album, “Sweet Old Religion”, reflects on that experience and on an individual’s power to feel love in the world no matter their beliefs.

Having been together for a decade, making music together, working together, and parenting together, the Romeros are at their strongest and most free on Sweet Old Religion. “Our lives have become so intertwined, even our phrasing and vocal cadences match like family,” says Pharis. In keeping with their handcrafted and homemade family business disposition, Pharis and Jason sought to make as much of the album live in their home as possible. Turning one side of their reconstructed instrument shop into a studio, they recorded with engineer John Raham and producer Marc Jenkins. The album also features Patrick Metzger on bass, John Reischman on mandolin, Josh Rabie on fiddle, and Raham and Jenkins joining them on drums and pedal steel.

After album opener “Sweet Old Religion”, the record then takes the listener to an evocative treatise on the power of each of us to create change in a “Stitch In Time”. While Pharis sings of her desire to adore her old wanderer no matter where he wanders in “Salt And Powder”, Jason lauds the wanderer’s life in “Leave The Garden Gate Open”. Both sing of love inspired by their children in “Babes, Mothers And Fathers” and “Come On Love”, while “The Salesman” describes their hope for a future less cluttered by consumerism and more enrobed by acceptance for one’s fellow humans. “You Are A Shining Light” is inspired by the gifts given by a dying member of their music community (who died before they were able to play him this song). And in homage to their love for early American roots music, “Old World Style” sings of the lonely cowboy on the prairie, “Age Old Dream” of the young rural worker unsure of where his future lies, and “You Are The Best Thing” is a hopeful thought from one young lover to another.

Musically, Sweet Old Religion carries a wide spread of influences, spanning from early 1920s jazz, blues, and country to 1960s songwriters like Levon Helm and The Band. The album also features songs inspired by their deep love of old music and rural life, with archaic banjo tunings where Jason moves between several of his own handmade instruments to bring out unique tones for each song.

Now, Pharis & Jason Romero are back on the road, with a new workshop, a mostly finished house, and two kids running across the fields. The songs on Sweet Old Religion sparkle like stars. Together they form a constellation that tells an ancient and archetypal story visible to anyone who looks up at the sky on a summer night. And to all those who listen it whispers down below: “Slow down, dig deep, and love your neighbour.”
