“What is the future, if this is now?” asks Canadian-born Mike Edel on his upcoming album Thresholds due out March 1. This question, echoing throughout groove of the song “Challenger”, similarly echoes throughout Edel’s entire record, produced by Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla.

Thresholds is a compelling departure for Edel and after adopting a consistency is boring mantra and a tireless year in the studio, Edel’s sound has evolved and this is his most intriguing album yet. From the indie-pop chiller “Go With You” to the CBC Music Top 20, thirties are the new twenties anthem, “31”, Edel presents stand-alone singles that present a uniform theme throughout the 10-song effort.

Today, Edel shares radio rocker “Houdini”, a song in which he blew out his vocal chords each day he tracked the song. It’s one of my proudest moments as an artist because ‘letting go’, and co-writer Chris Walla’s heavy handed production, resulted in a song that sounds new and really stretched me to cross my own sonic thresholds.” “Houdini” is available across all digital platforms on January 18.

Edel’s music has been streamed 2 million times across major platforms, being in rotation on CBC Music, AAA Radio across the United States, and on Sirius XM’s The Loft. In the past few years he’s played hundreds of shows including Rifflandia Festival, Vancouver Folk Festival, Regina Folk Festival, Victoria International Jazz Festival, and Upstream Music Festival, having shared the stage with Serena Ryder, Foy Vance, Said The Whale, and Josh Garrels.

“What is the future, if this is now?” asks Canadian-born Mike Edel in the lush indie-rock track “Challenger”, recounting the space shuttle Challenger tragedy in which millions of people around the world collectively tuned into their TV sets on January 26, 1986. That question similarly echoes throughout Edel’s latest singles “Go With You” and “31”, produced by Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla.

“The song ‘Challenger’ presents a moment in a time when the world felt out of control, and left us with a collective sense of confusion and disorientation,” says Edel. “Sometimes in life we are faced with events that just make the stakes feel a little higher. In these moments, we are presented with a choice: do we resign and despair, or do we with courage, embrace hope? ‘Challenger’ doesn’t provide an answer but rather takes us to the edge of this moment, to a threshold, and leaves us with the question: ‘How do I take this, how do I carry the news? What is the future if this is now?’”

Today, Mike Edel is sharing the new video for “31”, his ‘I Won’t Back Down’, 30s is the new 20s inspired anthem. A one-take visual of Mike dancing and singing, he says the video shoot “really tired me out. I'm glad it's a one-shot video because I don't think I had it in me to shoot it again... because I'm 31.”

Mike further explains that “31” is about “your friends getting real jobs, buying houses, renovating their basements to their newly purchased homes, then renting it out and talking about real estate all the time.” Live In Limbo claims “31” is “a glorious folk-pop meditation on growing older and not losing your sense of adventure. The song acts as a rallying point that your best days are not behind you.”

This Fall, Mike Edel will continue on tour throughout Canada to support his two new singles, “31” and “Go With You”, both of which were produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie).

Recently, Mike also shared the video for “Go With You”, an optimistic indie-pop anthem for 2018’s dwindling days of summer and beyond. The video sees Mike surprise his dad at home just to spend the day with him; bowling, at the bookstore, getting a key cut, and eating pizza. “I am still not sure if he knows we made the music video,” says Mike.
