Currently, Sam Cash is halfway through a two week Independent Music Residency at the Banff Centre, and the effects of the songwriting retreat are already showing. “At certain points in the last few months, I have felt a bit deflated with the whole ‘music career’ thing – feeling that the ambition that had once driven me was starting to slip away, and I was beginning to lose sight of why I loved writing and performing songs in the first place,” says Cash. “It’s easy to get caught up in your own head, and forget what the most important parts about creating are. I think everyone is guilty of giving way to their insecurities, and I have had a particularly rough bout of it over the past little while.”

However, after week one and with the help of Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene), Charles Spearin (Broken Social Scene), Kathleen Edwards, Nyles Spencer (The Tragically Hip), and Graham Lessard (Kevin Drew, Timber Timbre) at the Banff Centre, Cash finds himself both creatively challenged and rewarded. “I have really been pushed to do better every day – never settling on a lyric, or a melody, or a chord progression, but always going a few percent further to find those magic moments,” he says. “The songs I’ve been writing up here have been the most fruitful writing and recording experiences of my short career. We are given the dream team up here, and I feel very fortunate that i get to have the opportunity to watch how how these great artists work in and out of the studio. This has truly been inspiring, and it has given me a newfound excitement to start work on the new record – in whatever form that may take.“

Sam Cash & The Romantic Dogs spent much of the summer on tour with the likes of July Talk, Zeus, Sam Roberts, Arkells and more, however they’re sticking close to home for the winter. In fact, they’ll call The Rivoli home for three nights, November 11 and 25, and December 9 for a cozy residency. “This will be a great night to stretch out our catalogue, and get familiar with some classic covers,” says Cash. “We used to do Saturday’s at the Cameron House, and they used to be real highlights of the week for everyone involved. We wanted to bring back that same feeling of community and camaraderie, but wanted to see how it would work at a venue that traditionally doesn’t normally have weekend residencies.”

And on December 22, Cash will host the third annual Cover Me Impressed show at Lee’s Palace. The past two years of this fundraising night have featured Jim Cuddy, July Talk, Brendan Canning, The Elwins, Ian Blurton, Fast Romantics, and many others. Who knows who will grace the stage this year? “These are the hardest and most rewarding shows we’ve ever done,” says Cash. “It always comes together pretty last minute, and we are essentially learning 40 new covers, usually with less than a month to go, every time. As a result, they are often the most fun shows we have. It feels so great to be able to do our small part to help.”

Canned food donations from the night will go to The Daily Bread Food Bank, while cash donations will benefit SKETCH Working Arts. “I wasn’t actually aware of what SKETCH was until we started doing this show, and I think they are doing such good work in the way they connect the healing power of arts with so many of Canada’s homeless and on-the-margin youths. So many musicians and songwriters can attest to the way music has had a positive – if not life altering – effect on them. I think the reason these nights are so amazing and memorable, is the huge amount of love and respect in the room, from the audience, to the various musicians who have donated their time and talent to this amazing, heart warming night.”

GORD DOWNIE ANNOUNCES RECONCILIATION FUND WITH WENJACK FAMILY, SHARES FIRST SONG FROM 'SECRET PATH'

DOWNIE AND WENJACK FAMILIES LAUNCH FUND FOCUSED ON RECONCILIATION

GORD DOWNIE PREVIEWS “THE STRANGER”, FIRST CHAPTER OF SECRET PATH ALBUM, BOOK & FILM

INTERVIEW WITH PETER MANSBRIDGE AIRS ON CBC’S THE NATIONAL TONIGHT

Mike and Gord Downie and the family of Chanie Wenjack today announce the creation of a new Fund focused on creating new relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund is part of Gord Downie’s legacy, commitment and recognition of the wounds that will take generations to heal.

“Generations grew up not hearing about what’s happening in the North and in Indigenous communities everywhere. The next generation can’t be raised the same way,” said Gord Downie. “It is my hope that the Fund will do its part in starting to bridge some of the gaps that exist between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.”

At the closing concert of The Tragically Hip’s Man Machine Poem Tour on August 20, Gord Downie called upon Canadians to look North and “do something”. He since travelled to Ogoki Post to meet with the family of Chanie Wenjack. Chanie was a young boy who died in October 1966, walking the railroad tracks, trying to escape from the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School. Chanie’s story will be told through Secret Path, an album and a graphic novel that will be released on October 18, with an animated film adaptation on October 23.

“It’s time for us to acknowledge and help the people we were trained to ignore. It’s time to do something,” said Mike Downie. “This Fund will help make this a reality and will act as a catalyst to forge relationships for reconciliation.”

“Our family and community are grateful that Gord is lending his voice to this important story,” the Wenjack Family said in a statement. Several members of the Wenjack Family will be present at the inaugural Secret Path performance at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on October 18. A second concert will take place at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto on Friday, October 21.

The Fund is currently operating out of the Toronto Foundation, with a majority of Indigenous peoples on its Board of Directors. It is being guided by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.

Donations to the Fund are now being accepted at downiewenjack.caThe Fund is also on Twitter and Facebook.

The fund announcement is accompanied by “The Stranger”, the first full song and chapter of Secret PathAdapted from Gord Downie’s album and Jeff Lemire’s graphic novel, The Secret Path chronicles the heartbreaking story of Chanie’s residential school experience and subsequent death as he escapes and attempts to walk 600 km home to his family. The film will be broadcast by CBC in an hour-long commercial-free television special on Sunday, October 23 at 9pm (9:30 NT) and streamed worldwide at cbc.ca/secretpath at 9pm ET.

Secret Path will arrive on October 18, 2016, in a special deluxe vinyl and book edition released by Arts & Crafts, and as a book with album download published by Simon & Schuster Canada

Heavy Metal Sunshine draws from many diverse wells – pop, noise, soul, all with an eye to the baroque, and continues to expand into new territory. The album was captured at Edmontone Studios by Jesse Brandon Northey, mixed by Renny Wilson at Value Sound, and mastered by Harris Newman at Grey Market Mastering.

Throughout their past three EPs Diamond Mind have won audiences with the unique character of their songs, recorded in environments ranging from attic bedrooms to storied, established studios. The songs on Heavy Metal Sunshine echo this varied topography, ranging in content from intimate, confidential entries, elaborate pseudo-histories and haunting character sketches.
