“Milk And Honey” Video Still

Recently, Jordan Klassen shared his first new single of 2021, “Milk And Honey”, a song about “feeling constrained, held up, waiting for something better to unfold,” he says. “And learning how to exist and even make the best of that space.” The new video for the track from director Joey Lopez embodies this idea. “The subject lives behind plexiglass (which we've all become familiar with) and dances there, expressing angst and fear and rambling hope. But still dancing.”

On the video, Lopez says, “for ‘Milk And Honey’ I wanted to deconstruct the original themes Jordan and I had come up with initially for the video. In my head, the video needed many moving parts, but at the core I found the most important thing – the thing I wanted to use to express the themes of the songs was movement. I wanted to avoid being direct with the scenes and instead wanted to focus on the body language of dancers. That’s when our choreographer and dancer in the video Anya Saugstad came in; we discussed what I wanted the video to be and after each meeting we had I began to simplify the message more and more, cutting away at what I felt were superfluous moments and instead began focusing on what I truly wanted from this video and that was pure emotional expression.

Instead of creating a straightforward narrative we decided to go with a dance and a single set piece: the glass cube. I felt rather than interpreting the song directly I should instead use what I thought inspired the song – longing, nostalgia, loss and the toll it takes on our mental health. The cube represents that moment in our minds that we constantly return to and find ourselves stuck in. Instead of fighting them or pushing them away we choose to embrace them; to express directly how it makes us feel and to invite others inside to understand what this feeling really means to us.”

Over his career, Jordan Klassen has toured worldwide, becoming widely known for his well-crafted arrangements and nuanced songwriting. His sixth full-length record is due out in early 2022.

Today, Geoffroy (pronounced : Jeff-wah) is sharing the closing track from his upcoming self-released third LP, Live Slow Die Wise, out January 19, 2022.

“Life As It Comes” was “one of the first ideas that developed into a song after confinement had first started,” says Geoffroy. “I kept repeating those two first chords at the piano, they felt good. I felt at peace. The pandemic had forced us all to take a step back and it triggered this reflection. Despite all the curveballs that life had thrown my way, I was feeling happy and grateful for the life I was living. Feeling free, loved and content with where I was and what I had achieved, both on a personal and professional level. And so I wanted to dig into this state of mind and try to reason, or explain it somehow. The result is a testimony of gratitude. A song about acceptance, integrity and gratitude, all playing a crucial part in achieving well-being and self-realization.”

MORE ABOUT LIVE SLOW DIE WISE

The journey to the LP’s 2022 release began with the unveiling of “Cold World”, an intimate and reflective song that beautifully represents the album’s tone. “Live Slow Die Wise is the timeless story of societal individualism and ego,” Geoffroy shares. “We’re driven by an endless pursuit for growth, innovation and profit. But at what cost?” Live Slow Die Wise still features the personal and reflective touch Geoffroy fans know to expect, but this time through the lens tinted by experience. Inspired by artists like Ry Cooder, Paul Simon, Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, and thinkers such as Alan Watts, Eckhart Tolle, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, Geoffroy brought a more contemplative and philosophical approach to the album’s songwriting than in previous works.

Live Slow Die Wise was penned during isolation in 2020, and brought to life in the studio with help from legendary French Canadian producer Louis-Jean Cormier. The songs mark a return to Geoffroy’s early days as an artist, travelling the world and playing solo on the streets as he went. A renewed appreciation for organic instrumentation and a recording process that favoured live takes in the studio added depth and authenticity to the songs and hopefully, forge a deep and intimate connection with the listener.

Live Slow Die Wise represents a specific state of mind. It's about taking the time to live freely and consciously. It's about being aware and embracing the ephemerality and fragility of life.”

SCOTT HARDWARE’S BALLAD OF A TRYHARD, OUT MARCH 4, 2022

How do you self-stabilize amidst ongoing crisis? Or, more crucially, what does it mean to question how much control we have over our collective well-being? On Ballad of a Tryhard, the third album by Scott Hardware, the moniker of Toronto-based musician and composer Scott Harwood, he attempts a response by honouring the splendor of “living between emotions.” It’s an album where a rich inner monologue, and the undefined space between reflection and realization can offer an invaluable reprieve.

Over luminous keys and sky-sweeping melodies, Harwood reverse engineers his capabilities as a composer skilled in the art of complexity to deliver his boldest album to date — unselfconsciously ambitious Y2K rock; a reimagination of experimental adult contemporary that tweaks the limits of soft rock with curiosity and appreciation.

For the first single, “Summer” (which features members of Phedre, Lee Paradise, WHIMM, Vallens, Blunt Chunks, and Jaunt), Harwood tries his hand at a bouncy, heartstring ballad built for the open road. "I was born in September, and autumn has always been my favourite season,” says Harwood. “Fall people love to look back and to dwell in the bittersweetness of memory. This song marks a deep dive into my changing thoughts about nostalgia, seeing it change from cozy romanticism to toxic waste."

On Ballad of a Tryhard, Hardware conducts a painstaking character evaluation to better understand the world by looking inward. Suspended and exalting, the album bursts with cinematic flourishes that ring with a courageous form of earnestness. Because once you examine the internal toll of people-pleasing, and question if charisma has been overvalued, is there space to imagine a new reality that seeks to uplift rather than wallow — observing sparse moments of beauty and light amidst a world in constant mourning?

Crafted in Spain and co-produced with Matt Smith (Prince Nifty, Lido Pimienta), Ballad of a Tryhard is a snapshot of weeks spent in Elche, a sleepy Mediterranean city on the southeast coast, wandering through emptied-out streets, becoming acquainted with the interiors of a historic apartment block, and living for the first time with a familiar love. With unlimited time on his hands, Harwood would write slowly, playing piano until dawn. The result is an album with ornate and bucolic orchestral arrangements that nod to a background in techno and house with a tangled web of synths and strings.

Prior to his solo work as Scott Hardware, Harwood played with indie rock stalwart Toronto groups like Ostrich Tuning and released ambient pop as Ken Park. A move to Berlin influenced his 2016 debut, Mutate Repeat Infinity, which centered the dancefloor as a site of queer resilience. 2020’s Engel pulled direct inspiration from Wim Wender’s 1987 haunting masterpiece Wings of Desire. In 2021 Harwood was accepted into the Slaight Family Music Lab.
