‘He gave me a call/ at the foot of a cliff / To tell me he’d done it/ and he’d obviously lived’ recounts Emma Worley. These are the opening lines from the singer/songwriters’ debut release Sentimentalist, a poignant and revealing statement that aims to inform us of the depth and raw expression that is to follow. Her voice gently glides above an elegant arrangement, eventually leading the listener to a rich landscape of texture and sound. The idea of a free fall into the unknown is something that Worley is no stranger to. Following a difficult separation from her long-time partner, artistic conspirator and co-producer, Worley dove headfirst into a new world where she was caught, and raised back up by a community of like minded artists and peers.

“‘Gemini’ was written in the wake of a big fight about nothing,” says Worley. “Actually, it was written in the wake of a big fight about adopting a cat. It is about being reactive and then filled with gut wrenching remorse. Passion is double edged and channeling it positively is something I’ve worked really hard at. In a way, I wrote this song asking for patience and forgiveness from someone I love and hurt. It’s about an emotional swell; love and tension swirling around something you can’t help but damage, no matter how you cherish it.”

The video for “Gemini” was directed by Nora Rosenthal and features members of the Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre performing in costumes designed and fabricated by Worley with many helping hands. Shot on 16mm film, the video for “Gemini” will also be featured on the prestigious @kodak_shootfilm on May 11th.

MORE ABOUT EMMA WORLEY + SENTIMENTALIST
Hailing from Guelph, Ontario, and now residing in Toronto, Worley spent many years dedicated to a career as an emerging visual artist. Upon graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design University, Worley garnered attention for her sculpture/installation work through exhibitions, installations, and residencies at various high-profile institutions. However, despite her burgeoning success in the visual-arts world, Worley found herself compulsively drawn towards creating the material that would become her debut album, Sentimentalist. Pulling from lived experience, triumph, heartbreak, and everything in between, the wisdom and grace of this collection is telling of Worley's dedication to relatable storytelling and emotional finesse.

Worley began laying the foundation for Sentimentalist with Miles Breithaupt (Babygirl, Father Moth) in the Spring of 2020. Through a chance meeting with bass player and future collaborator, Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station, Julia Jacklin), the project’s intent began to grow. Worley recalls first seeing Whiteley perform alongside Julia Jacklin on her NPR Tiny Desk performance, in which she lovingly refers to him as ‘Beautiful Ben’. The next day, as fate would have it, a chance meeting at a coffee shop directed Whiteley into Worley’s orbit. Soon after, he became heavily involved in the ongoing recording project.

Through mutual friends, Worley invited up and coming producer and session musician Jasper Smith (Georgia Harmer, Jeremie Albino) into the equation. Smith's ear for subtle arrangements and celestial scoring became an integral element in shaping the sonic character of the project. With everyone’s touring schedules put on hold due to the pandemic, this new dream team of like minded studio virtuosos set out on framing Worleys expertly crafted material. Throughout the experience, Worley recalls the camaraderie of the group as unflinching. She fondly reflects on a moment in the alley behind Whiteley's family home, where Whiteley used his phone to record her singing the seed ideas for string parts. From there, Whiteley developed the orchestral arrangements on which he plays cello and double bass. He then sent these recordings to genius string composer Drew Jurecka (Dua Lipa, Bahamas), who brought them to life with viola and violin.

The power of Sentimentalist exists within the restraint and subtlety of the arrangements, which frame the poetic lyrical twists and turns of the dream-like world that Worley has cultivated. There is a playful swagger which harkens to the likes of Rickie Lee Jones, while maintaining the cloak and dagger heart wrench of Leonard Cohen. This record feels effortless, yet finely sculpted, and reaches well beyond the expected confines of a first release, rather showcasing the maturity and confidence of a songwriter deep into their catalogue. It proves that sometimes a leap of faith can plunge you deep into a new world of endless possibility.

KINGMAKER ARRIVES VIA OUTSIDE MUSIC ON FRIDAY, JULY 15

“Tami Neilson and Willie Nelson meditate on heavy losses in their new duet…‘Beyond the Stars’ is a mournful ballad in 3/4 time and it takes a close look at the grief brought on by a loved one’s death. Neilson wrote the song after the 2015 loss of her father and, while Nelson acts as her father’s voice in his verse, it takes on an extra poignancy coming so soon after the death of his sister and bandmate Bobbie Nelson.” ROLLING STONE

“‘Beyond The Stars’ taps into the painful feelings of longing to be with the one you've lost. Neilson and Nelson's vocals blend beautifully on the emotional and poetic song, anchored by a soaring string section.”THE BOOT

“‘Beyond the Stars’ works to help remedy all loss, giving hope for a reunification someday in the future in the eternal dwelling of the cosmos, delivered via the timeless tones of Willie’s guitar Trigger.”SAVING COUNTRY MUSIC

With sweeping strings arranged by award-winning composer/arranger Victoria Kelly and the sound of a lonesome whistle that conjures the cinematic spirit of classic Hollywood Westerns, “Baby, You’re a Gun” sees Neilson exploring society’s underestimation of strong women and the roles they are expected to play.

MORE ABOUT KINGMAKER
Recorded at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios in Neilson’s adopted hometown of Auckland, New Zealand, KINGMAKER marks Neilson’s most provocative and powerful collection to date. Fueled by the world-changing events of the past two years, the album’s songs expose and explode the patriarchal structures that pervade the music industry, family life, and society as a whole. While Neilson has previously explored these themes on such acclaimed LPs as 2018’s SASSAFRASS! (hailed by PopMatters as “a potent social and political statement dressed up in catchy melodies and infectious choruses that sometimes belie the more serious elements taking place deep within the choruses.”), the new album draws these challenging ideas out even further, shining a dramatic musical light on what the late bell hooks referred to as “the politics of domination” that render women nameless and voiceless. Songs like “Baby, You’re A Gun” and the cinematic title track see Neilson giving her own resonant voice to women everywhere – to their strength, power, fierceness, and resilience in the face of structural and cultural barriers to their full participation in society.

Born in Toronto, Tami Neilson has been performing for as long as she can remember, first alongside her parents and brothers in the Canadian country music family band, The Neilsons. From being cradled as a baby in the arms of Roy Orbison, singing with Kitty Wells at the age of 10, and opening for Johnny Cash in her pajamas at 18, she had already led an extraordinary life before leaving North America in 2007 to start her own family on the other side of the world in New Zealand, where she has resided ever since. It was there Neilson forged her own artistic path as a critically acclaimed solo artist and songwriter, busking on the streets of Auckland and performing in countless clubs before ultimately earning wide-ranging applause and myriad NZ-based awards for her booming vocal power and inventive, strikingly personal approach to country, rockabilly, and soul. 2020’s CHICKABOOM! proved her most internationally praised work thus far, with No Depression declaring, “Neilson’s phrasing is impeccable…she gets inside the song, turns it inside and out, and makes it her own. She can soar on the rockers, she can deliver the heart-rending ache of a ballad of lost love, and she can capture the playfulness of a schoolyard rhyme with a joyous seriousness.” With her tireless work ethic, seemingly infinite musical gifts, and subversive songwriting approach, Tami Neilson has already found extraordinary success on her own terms. Now, with the groundbreaking KINGMAKER, she takes her music and message even further, using her one-of-a-kind voice to rattle cages and change the game for those who have been denied their rightful place at the table for far too long.

Or maybe she's just waiting for the rest of the world to finally catch up.” – THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE

Currently finishing up a month-long tour of Europe, Jerry Leger will soon embark on a four week tour across Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island in celebration of his acclaimed new LP Nothing Pressing. All dates are listed below and tickets and more information can be found HERE

Written during the pandemic, Nothing Pressing isn’t the only thing has kept Leger busy while off the road. In 2020 Leger published his first book of poetry Just the Night Birds, made a film for his mailing list subscribers The Apartment Show He Never Gave, while releasing what he terms a “surprise” album, Songs from the Apartment

Songs from the Apartment was a stripped-down lo-fi affair recorded in his home using a cheap tape recorder with an internal microphone. Two songs from the current album, “Underground Blues” and “Sinking In”, were also recorded in Leger’s home, this time using two SM58 microphones fed into his vintage 1981 Tascam 4-track tape recorder. The remaining nine tracks included on Nothing Pressing present Leger’s work in two starkly contrasting soundscapes. “Nothing Pressing”, “Protector”, and “Still Patience”, are solo acoustic recordings cut live in the studio with little embellishment save Dan Mock’s overdubbed harmony vocals and, on the title track, producer Michael Timmins’ ukulele. The other six tracks are prime roots rock and roll featuring his long-time band The Situation (drummer Kyle Sullivan and bass player Dan Mock). Among the latter songs, “Kill It With Kindness and “Have You Ever Been Happy?” have the kind of drive, energy and spirit that  are sure to make them highlights of his future live shows.

Leger often times finds himself at a loss as to explain the source of his songs. He feels his  songwriting, while clearly drawing on experiences filtered through a panoply of influences, often verges on being a supernatural experience. Over the course of the eleven songs on Nothing Pressing, the songwriter’s songwriter engages with questions of existence, mortality, hope, trust, and heartbreak while simultaneously conjuring feelings of isolation, reflection, longing, and gratitude.

Paired with such evocative lyrics are wonderfully crafted melodies, soulful vocals, and the spirit and energy of a mature songwriter, comfortable in his skin and growing as an artist with every release. Nothing Pressing serves a wonderfully refreshing tonic in troubling times.

Born in the mid-80s, singer-songwriter Jerry Leger came of age in the Upper Beaches area of  Toronto. Surrounded by music from a young age, his grandfather first turned him onto Hank  Williams, constantly playing the youngster a plethora of the honky tonk master’s great  recordings. Although Williams’ voice came from another world in terms of time, geography,  and class, Leger was intrigued by the ways that Williams’ songs told a story and often conjured up mysterious images in his head. Other seminal influences were slowly added including John Lennon (and the Beatles), Bob Dylan, Lightnin' Hopkins, Leonard Cohen, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, the Everly Brothers, Tom Waits, and Gordon Lightfoot.

In 2005 as Leger turned nineteen he cut his first independently released album. In the sixteen  years since then the multi-talented singer-songwriter has recorded nine additional studio  albums as well as one live compilation under his own name. In 2014 he was signed to the  Cowboy Junkies’ label, Latent Recordings, releasing the critically acclaimed Early Riser that  same year. His second Latent release, Nonsense and Heartache, followed in 2017. A year  later the two-album set was picked up by Proper Records for distribution in the U.K and  Europe, leading to extensive touring throughout the continent, in the process opening up a  whole new audience for Leger’s finely crafted songs. With his next Latent album, 2019’s Time Out for Tomorrow, Leger began to receive positive notices in such high-profile music  magazines as Uncut and Rolling Stone.

A restless hungry spirit, when not performing and recording under his own name, Leger stays busy with a plethora of side projects including The Del Fi’s (loose improvisatory rock and  roll) and the Bop Fi’s (Leger reciting his poetry over jazz accompaniment). He has also been known to work under the pseudonym Hank Holly (bonus points go to those who can figure out where that name came from!).
