Following the 2008 release of their third album Breakfast in Suburbia which PopMatters called literate power pop of the highest order, the Telepathic Butterflies offer up another collection of unapologetically catchy pop/rock gems: Wow & Flutter. The opening track, ‘Circle Man’, sets the stage with its driving drums, energetic riffs and lush harmonies. “Lilacs” is a reverberating trip down memory lane – a scrappy ode to young love in the vein of Wreckless Eric. Centered around a propulsive piano motif, ‘Aloha’ glitters and glams, Bowie-style, beckoning the listener to “get the party started”. The album ends with a bang. ‘Cheerleader’ is a four-on-the-floor upbeat tune with a melancholic tinge, evoking the urgency of the Who along with the sweetness of the Ronettes.
Citing influences spanning several decades – from the Beatles and Kinks, to Squeeze, Bowie, The Knack, Buzzcocks, Replacements and Sloan – this Winnipeg band creates pristine powerpop with equal doses of muscle and melody.
Aptly titled*, Wow & Flutter was recorded in the TBs home studio on half-inch analogue tape, lending it a warm vintage feel. Wow & Flutter is the first recording featuring long-time live members Russ Kroeker on bass and Rob Pachol on guitar. Original members Jacques Dubois - drummer/engineer extraordinaire, and Réjean Ricard - lead vocalist, guitar player and songwriting machine - have been refining and perfecting their sound on stage and in the studio for over ten years. As a result of this dedication to craft and process, they have that rare ability of sounding both classic and fresh simultaneously. Case in point: Wow & Flutter. This is music for music lovers. This is the real deal. No bullshit, no ego, no pretension, no shtick - just great songs. Period. So put on your favourite headphones and crank your stereo to 11… and be prepared to be wowed and fluttered into sonic bliss. *wow and flutter: irregularities in the playback speed of analog recordings.
