“another scion of Canada's alt-royalty...” -Q Magazine – 4 Stars

In celebration of today’s release of Aidan Knight’s new album, Each Other, fans can watch the acclaimed Victoria songwriter perform the album in the studio for CBC Music’s First Play Live. Having spent much of last fall on the road in Europe, the hard work has already paid off. Each Other has been named BBC6 Music’s Album Of The Week,  Uncut Magazine has called the sound “breathtaking”, and MOJO Magazine claims his songwriting to be “darkly magnetic”. Having recently relocated to Berlin, Knight is currently preparing for another stretch of tour dates throughout Europe before returning to North America to support the album.

Released today via Outside Music, Each Other was recorded at the Bathouse Studio, just outside of Kingston and home to Millhaven Maximum Security Prison, where the band sequestered themselves in the studio for over two weeks with producer Marcus Paquin (The National, Local Natives, Stars). Together with Paquin they were meticulous with each song, piecing together the raw energy of the live show along with the layered textures that could only be captured in the studio. An exhaustive process to say the least which Knight reflects on in saying, “Marcus, guided an unruly collection of ideas and a sometimes impulsive person (me) with remarkable patience (Marcus is also a new father).” Each Other was mixed over a very cold winter by Mathieu Parisian (Patrick Watson, Karkwa), a man familiar with intricately elaborate recordings. The LP’s tracklisting and artwork can be found below.

Lyrically, Knight’s penchant for astute observations and personal reflections remains a compelling component of his songwriting, as previously witnessed on 2012's acclaimed album Small Reveal. Aidan muses, “It’s nice to keep a journal. I’ve never actually done it myself, but I understand the appeal. You document time and memory; it allows for a kind of time travel.”

"...Caplan comes onto the scene with all of the brooding sentiment of 10 billion roaring lions and their horn ensemble...one thing is for sure – Caplan’s got style." - PopMatters

“...full of rousing choruses, eclectic instrumentation and dramatic and spooky lyricism. The songs are distant cousins to both Tom Waits and Gogol Bordello.” - CBC Music

“Expertly toeing the line between lush, orchestral folk and gruff, rough-and-tumble blues, Birds with Broken Wings is an entrancing and dynamic listen”  - Exclaim!

“Both romantic and dilapidated. Warning: Masterpiece” - Le Droit

Acclaimed Halifax artist Ben Caplan has premiered the video for his song “Birds With Broken Wings” today courtesy of Gigwise. “The video for ‘Birds With Broken Wings’, like the music and the lyrics of the song, is an exploration of beauty and chaos,” says Caplan. “Striving for an idea of perfection and arriving at place worse than imperfect. It's a video about struggle, articulated by dancers, and it was exciting for me to work on a project in which I could collaborate with artists in that medium."

Caplan has also announced his upcoming North American run, which begins on February 24 making stops along the East Coast and throughout Quebec. Tickets are on sale now and more info can be found at http://bencaplan.ca/. See full list of dates below.

Out now on Coalition Music, Birds With Broken Wings was produced by Montreal rapper/hip-hop/klezmer artist Josh “Socalled” Dolgin and mixed by Renauld Letang (Feist, Manu Chau), and features some 35 guest musicians and collaborators on 12 tracks recorded over the course of three intense and productive weeks of 10-hour days in the studio.

The ultimate focus of the album remains steadfastly on Caplan’s vocals, songwriting, and storytelling, which have already won him Nova Scotia’s 2012 Entertainer of the Year and the East Coast Music Award for Rising Star Recording of the Year for 2013. He has shared stages with acts ranging from Grizzly Bear and Dirty Projectors to The Staves and Blondie, and played major festivals around the world including the U.K.’s Glastonbury.

Donovan Woods is preparing to hit the road this winter to support his upcoming album, Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled, set for release on February 26 via Woods’ own label, Meant Well. Opening for Matt Andersen, Canadian tour dates begin February 16 and traverse the entire country from coast to coast. To kick off the tour Woods is treating listeners to an intimate live performance of “Leaving Nashville” produced by the fine folks at Massey Hall.

Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley has also recorded Woods’ song “Leaving Nashville” for his debut solo album. Country Weekly called the song a “devastating ballad” while Billboard described it as “an emotional wallop.”

“This is a song I wrote with my friend Abe Stoklasa about songwriting,” says Woods. “There's some jargon in it, but I think you'll be able to figure it out. Mostly it's about places like Nashville that ruin people daily, but maintain some kind of inescapable appeal. It is the place you've dreamed about, and also it's not at all. It's a place that specializes in those contradictory, simultaneous feelings. Like everything that seems like it's one thing or another, it's both things. Everything is always both things.”

Produced by James Bunton (Evening Hymns, The Wooden Sky), Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled follows up Woods’ previous JUNO Award nominated album, Don’t Get Too Grand, and features “On The Nights You Stay At Home” which spent four weeks in the top three on CBC Radio 2’s Top 20 and a familiar bonus track “Portland Maine,” which, penned by Woods, was previously recorded by Tim McGraw.
