In reality, Wyatt Records started almost a decade ago when Evan Van Reekum and Paul Lawton began Mammoth Cave as a way to release a 7” for Chris Zajko’s band Sharp Ends. Since that label is now extinct, Van Reekum has partnered together with dear friend, compatriot, and bandmate Samantha Savage Smith, and longtime label supporter Adam Feuchuk to pick up where Mammoth Cave left off. Together the three of them hope to create a sustainable project that maintains the utmost level of integrity and reliability while delivering a standard of quality that listeners and participants may come to expect with every single release.

Coincidentally, Wyatt Record’s first official release and roster addition was Zajko’s newest project, Melted Mirror, whose first run of cassettes are already sold out (soon to be re-printed). Today, as a quasi-grand-opening of the label, Wyatt Records is announcing the release of a split 7” from two of Canada’s most acclaimed artists, Chad VanGaalen and Bry Webb.

PRE-ORDER THE 7” HERE

While VanGaalen’s track, “Primitive Brain” has existed in a couple forms, having been previously released on small run cassettes, the idea to create a split between himself and Bry Webb was born simply out of excitement. Webb was sold on the concept right away and created his song, “Modern Mind”, as a response to “Primitive Brain”. Webb’s contribution is available to stream today courtesy of Exclaim!. A limited run of physical copies of the 7” are available to pre-order today via Wyatt Records website. The split will also be available on all digital platforms in the near future. Watch Wyatt’s social media channels for an announcement on the specific date.

In the coming months Wyatt Records will be announcing many more fantastic artist signings and releases. Keep an ear to the ground for more news coming soon.

JORDAN KLASSEN ANNOUNCES NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES, STREAMS UPCOMING ALBUM 'JAVELIN' AHEAD OF FEBRUARY 19 RELEASE DATE

JORDAN KLASSEN ANNOUNCES NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES, STREAMS UPCOMING ALBUM

BC SONGWRITER TO RELEASE SECOND LP WITH NEVADO RECORDS, JAVELIN, ON FEBRUARY 19
SEVEN WEEK UK & EUROPEAN TOUR CONTINUES, NORTH AMERICAN DATES BEGIN MARCH 26

LISTEN TO JAVELIN VIA CBC MUSIC HERE

Jordan Klassen has been on the road in the UK and Europe since 2016 kicked off and, now, one week out from the release of his new album Javelin, he has announced upcoming dates on North American soil. Canadian tour stops include Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Wakefield, Montreal, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Calgary before finally heading home to Vancouver for an album release show. All tour dates are below.

Due out February 19 on Nevado Records, the ten songs on Javelin are among the most confidently and imaginatively arranged Jordan Klassen has ever recorded. They engage the past, reassess recollections and impressions, turn failures not into successes but lessons for the future. Starting today you can hear the album in it’s entirety courtesy of CBC Music.

LISTEN TO JAVELIN VIA CBC MUSIC HERE

On the recommendation of James Vincent McMorrow Klassen recorded Javelin at Sonic Ranch studio in Tornillo, just outside El Paso in Texas. He produced the album himself and plays almost all the instruments. The songs on Javelin spring from hard experiences—namely, from Klassen’s struggle with depression and his mother’s diagnosis with breast cancer, now thankfully in remission. Despite the fears and despairs that motivated these songs, there is always a kernel of hope illuminating the music from the inside.

Sonically, Javelin is a mixing of ambient and rhythmic elements, from the ebullient African percussion of “St. Fraser” to the heavily reverbed vocals of closer “Smoking Too Long.” Klassen found inspiration—a patron saint, of sorts—in an unlikely figure. “The record is a nod to the ‘90s New Age music that I grew up with,” he says with a slight chuckle. “My mom was really into Enya, and I wanted to explore some of those sounds in a very modern way. I wanted to really embrace ethereality.” It’s not hard to hear echoes of “Orinoco Flow” or “Caribbean Blue” in the soft-focus thrum of “Miles,” even the delicate overlay of instruments on “We Got Married,” even the whispered valedictory of “Smoking Too Long.”

The follow up to 2013’s acclaimed Repentance, the album sees Klassen depart from the eloquently spare folk of its predecessor, adding ambient and rhythmic elements to vivid Technicolor arrangements in what is his most vibrant and vital album to date.

The rock canon has many anti-heroes, Black Mountain being the latest. In the past, Can’s Tago Mago established that the only rule in rock and roll is that there are no rules. Pink Floyd’s prodigious output in the 70s showed us that architecture can be cool, while delinquent proto-metalers Black Sabbath demonstrated that you can make a lot from not that much. Now Black Mountain teach us that you don’t have to be afraid of the past to move bravely into the future, defining what it is to be a classic rock band in the new millennium. Now, they announce IV, an unapologetically ambitious record made by a group of musicians who are at the peak of their powers.

The group’s sense of rediscovery as a creative whole is tangible throughout. Stephen McBean, Jeremy Schmidt, Amber Webber, and Joshua Wells were joined in the studio by spiritually attuned bassist and veteran purveyor of the riff, Arjan Miranda (formerly of S.T.R.E.E.T.S, Children, and The Family Band) whose roots are connected to the same soil and cement that Black Mountain were borne from. Recording was primarily done in close collaboration with producer Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Wolves In The Throne Room, Marissa Nadler) at his trusted Avast! facility in Seattle. Set for release on April 1st via Dine Alone Records in Canada and Jagjaguwar in the rest of the world, IV follows up their previous effort, Wilderness Heart, which was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize.

The band has also announced a large tour in support of IV. Don't miss a chance to catch this powerful band live. European and North American tour dates begin March 19 with stops in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Calgary in May, before a triumphant return to Vancouver for a hometown show on May 21.

Physical preorder bundle options include the exclusive translucent orange double LP vinyl, exclusive merch designs, a limited edition custom pewter IV Model Concorde plane, and a Black Mountain IV skate deck.
