Snowblink’s newest collection of songs, Returning Current, is an unflinching study of human relationships – to self, to other, and to Other, and to the threat or actuality of losing those unrepeatable prizes. Set for release on September 9 via Outside Music, the Toronto / Los Angeles duo of Daniela Gesundheit and Dan Goldman began the recording process with a text based ‘mood board’ developed by Gesundheit to portray the sensations she wished to evoke in the production of the album. The musicians, producers, and engineers were faced with the task of sonically approximating themes of santa fe / arizona / palm springs / calypso disco / lots of space with bursts or ripples of sound.

Practically, this ambition meant that the band approached each song uniquely – here a full band live off the floor in a winter cabin, there a painstaking half-year-long process of revision, here a drum sample from years ago mixed with dozens of layers of analog synths and vocals. In sculpting the singular sound of Returning Current, no process was out of bounds – the band made themselves equally at home with a bevy of acoustic instruments, analog processes, or sample-based in-the-box production choices.

Earlier, the band shared album opener “How Now”, today they have revealed “Feel Like A Man”, a song that “came out of a sort of ambition-exhaustion, a masculinity burnout – career-related, especially,” says Gesundheit. I wondered if other women felt similarly, that they had to figuratively and energetically be ‘in drag’ to get their voices heard. I pictured myself as a man, feeling both the elation and intense frustration of being powerful. The lyrics are buoyed above a repetitive synth pattern and relentless groove – a kind of echo of foot soldiers going out each day to conquer based on orders from above without being entirely clear on what the war is all about.”

Joining Snowblink in studio for the creation of Returning Current was co-producer Robbie Lackritz (Feist, Bahamas), and a cast of acclaimed musicians including Leslie Feist, Owen Pallett, Barbara Gruska (Fiona Apple, Jenny Lewis, Ray LaMontagne), Johnny Spence (Tegan and Sara), Thom Gill, Ariel Engle (AroarA), Steven Foster (Doldrums), Felicity Williams (Bahamas), Philipe Melanson (Rufus Wainwright), Mika Posen (Timber Timbre), and many others.

What results is “mastery at its liquidiest” claimed Feist in a personal letter to the band. A collection of songs that find the speaker reporting, in the stark, James Blake-esque ballad “Second Sight”, that “the sky was kneeling on my back to pray,” or elucidating the slipperiness of desire, as in Returning Current. These are private songs, domestic songs, songs to be absorbed over time – unhurried, biological time, the passage of which helps us to survive ourselves.

Snowblink is sensual, not sterile, elegantly imperfect, Wabi Sabi. Gesundheit’s empathic, mesmeric lyrics, when coupled with Goldman’s patient and narcotic arranging and production style, establish a genuine intimacy without telling us what to feel.

Looking to the emotional intelligence of heavyweights like Nina Simone, PJ Harvey, or Violeta Parra, or poets Anne Carson and Fanny Howe, while adhering to the optimistic and playful presentation of ’80’s French pop duo Elie & Jacno, Snowblink manages a courageous strangeness, otherness, an optimal mismatch.

HARPACASH & THE MORALS SIGN TO LATENT RECORDINGS, RELEASE DRAKE COVER VIDEO

BARRIE, ONTARIO THREE PIECE SIGNS WITH LATENT RECORDINGS FOR UPCOMING ALBUM

WATCH AND SHARE THE VIDEO FOR HARPACASH & THE MORALS COVER OF DRAKE’S “ONE DANCE”

Halfway between Canada’s largest city, Toronto, and the lakes and forests of cottage country, Barrie, Ontario’s HarpAcash & the Morals utilize their surroundings to create a unique style of indie folk-rock that combines the tension of the former with the peacefulness of the latter. Consisting of lead vocalist HarpAcash, guitarist Todd Jeffrey, and drummer Daniel Trickett the band has become a must-see act in a very short period of time. Today, they are pleased to announce they have signed to Latent Recordings for an upcoming album.

It was after supporting the Cowboy Junkies on a string of dates that Michael Timmins was impressed by the trio. “Their music pulled me from backstage and compelled me to listen,” says Timmins. “HarpAcash's vocals alone are a force of nature, but joined with Todd Jeffery's angular song structures and Dan Trickett's powerful, multi-dimensional drumming, their music becomes wholly original. It has been a pleasure working with them and we look forward to introducing them to music lovers everywhere."

“We are honored to be partners with the passionate and creative team at Latent Recordings, who respect and support the vision of their artists,” says HarpAcash. “We are thrilled to be releasing our first full-length record on Latent. Much respect and appreciation to Michael for his work as our producer and mentor on the project.”

In celebration of the signing, HarpAcash & the Morals are sharing their live in studio video for their cover of Drake’s “One Dance”. “I had been enjoying Drake’s latest album, and ‘One Dance’ in particular,” says HarpAcash. “I was curious to see what we could do with it, the guys were up for the challenge, and well, we definitely put our own spin on it. I guess you could call it ‘genre-bending’.”

HarpAcash & the Morals recorded their first EP, Music Tree Life Understanding, in 2012 with producer Steve Singh (Ron Hawkins, Brendan Canning). They followed it up by taking the road with Elliott Brood, The Strumbellas, and the Cowboy Junkies, and secured a residency at Toronto’s Cameron House. Stay tuned as the band’s debut full length will be released later this year with more tour dates to follow.

ALEJANDRA RIBERA SHARES NEW SONG, "ORLANDO"

ALEJANDRA RIBERA SHARES NEW SONG, “ORLANDO”

LISTEN TO THE INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED SONGWRITER’S FIRST NEW MUSIC SINCE HER CELEBRATED 2014 RELEASE LA BOCA

PHOTO: Kristina Wagenbauer

Having spent the last two years living in Europe to support the release of La boca, Alejandra Ribera returned to Canada in 2016 to begin recording her follow-up album at Kingston’s Bathhouse Studios. Alejandra was deeply affected by the events happening around the world during the creation of the album, and with the recent events in Orlando, Florida has decided to offer a brand new song from the album as a tribute to the victims and also to help those affected by these and similar events cope with their loss.

Read her words below:

“Audre Lorde said ‘Your silence will not protect you’ and it is a sentiment I have always taken to heart. Yet in the days following the shooting in Orlando I found myself paralyzed by my sadness and wanting nothing more than to retreat from the world. Grief is an unpredictable beast and the truth is that the only way that I really know how to respond in moments like these is with art. So I'm breaking my silence.

Songs often function like prayers for me and I look to them for both guidance and comfort. The week of the Orlando shooting I received the final mix of the album that I've been working on since February. I wrote the track Orlando in 2015 and recorded it this past winter. Originally it began as a poem inspired by the character in Virginia Woolf's novel by the same title. I wrote it whilst in Paris the week of Charlie Hebdo shooting. At that time I needed to remind myself of the potential for transformation that can only come in our most vulnerable moments. I believe that when we feel totally stripped bare by sadness we are given a particular kind of opportunity to soften towards ourselves and see the pain as an invitation to be more present and awake. Orlando and the theme of rebirth feels as pertinent to me now as it did a year and a half ago when I wrote it. I mainly wrote it to soothe myself and so it is in that same spirit that I'm humbly offering it now.

I wish you all light. Take care of each other starting with yourselves.”
