“Working with famed producer Ben Allen, the sextet refined their sound, shifting their focus to rhythmic and percussive dexterity without sacrificing the soulfulness that made Believers’ ‘Bathtubs’ a hit.” - Flood Magazine

Flood Magazine has premiered "Living A Lie" from Royal Canoe’s upcoming release, Something Got Lost Between Here And The Orbit, due out September 16 via Nevado Records. Matt Peters tells Flood that the song is the product of a renewed focus, “On the new record we spent a lot of time manipulating organic sounds with elaborate pedal chains and effects loops that we later ran into sampling devices. The goal was to create libraries of sounds that felt somewhat alien, but that still had a familiar ‘skin’ on them. On ‘Living a Lie’ the organ, vocals, sax, and a bunch of the drums were all created with this approach.”

Last month the Winnipeg sextet premiered the video and first single, “Somersault” from their upcoming album via NPR Music who said “Listening to the hypnotic rhythm of Matt Peters' vocals, you can parse the same wackiness that made bands like Alt-J, Simian Mobile Disco or even fellow Canadians Think About Life so singular. Ultimately, it's feel-good dance music for the weird kids.” Royal Canoe also wrapped up a string of tour dates with Plants & Animals last month, and have now announced a whole Fall full of tour dates that takes them to every corner of North America. Full tour dates can be found below.

After two years of writing and recording between tours, Something Got Lost Between Here And The Orbit surfaced with a unique and intensified voice. It was co-produced and mixed by Ben Allen (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Deerhunter), who concentrated their sound-crafting attention on two fundamental elements: drums and vocals. Royal Canoe has always had an intensively rhythmic heart and that is more the case than ever. Their lyrics grow organically out of an addictive percussive flow and the unique topography of each track. Reinforcing their vocal and percussive core allowed them to be more adventurous with experimentation; more determined in their ongoing pursuit of the elusive musicality that can be found in collisions between digital and analogue worlds. In addition to their their usual buffet of synthesizers, effects pedals and homemade samples, late nights lead to to rabbit-holes of attaching contact mics to water bottles to play them like percussion instruments and convoluting synths through beluga whale field recordings.

In addition to a renewed sonic focus, Something Got Lost... brings an emotional clarity. But it’s a particular kind of clarity: one you experience when what’s most clear is that you’re really unsure about what’s happening with your life or, unsure about what happened to the life you once took for granted, while you were off experiencing stuff, being busy, accomplishing things. Life, and especially the life of musicians, tends to be shaped by an ebb and flow of leaving and returning, cycling between an extroverted, transient mode of being and one of introversion and staying put. Within the broader cycles, even our most important relationships can shift, morph and drift, no matter how much we try to hold them steady.

Almost three years have passed since the release of Royal Canoe’s sophomore album Today We're Believers. Those years were full. The band played 200 shows, which included tours with the likes of Alt J and Bombay Bicycle Club, and stops at major festivals like Bonaroo, Iceland Airwaves, and Osheaga. The hard work paid off; Today We're Believers received critical acclaim, was nominated for Alternative Album of the Year at the JUNOs, and won Best Independent Album at Western Canadian Music Awards.

“alchemizes the rawest elements of the most primordial heavy rock into something fresh, glazed with the sheen of the near-future” - The Prairie Dog

With two singles from their upcoming album, Positive Thinking, already tearing up the radio charts, the critics are starting to chime in on Pack A.D.’s ferocity. Exclaim! says the sound unfurls bashed-and-boomed drum work from Maya Miller, a series of in-the-red riffs and Becky Black's beckon call,” while The Prairie Dog claims it “alchemizes the rawest elements of the most primordial heavy rock into something fresh, glazed with the sheen of the near-future.”

On the heels of a successful spring tour, the East Vancouver duo is now adding more tour dates this fall including stops in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa beginning October 20. Full tour dates can be found below and more Canadian dates will be announced soon.

Set for release on August 12 via Cadence Music, Positive Thinking is all carefully constructed chaos, crushing vulnerability, and massive swagger. Underneath the sprawl of its sonic infrastructure, singer/guitarist Black and drummer Miller — self described lifelong high school outcasts — traverse the hidden tunnels that connect all us damaged people together: anger, alienation, humour, sarcasm, sincerity, loneliness, grief.

Positive Thinking explores the numbing day-to-day routine of depression and the fantastical ways that we look to mask it from ourselves and others,” Miller says. “The lyrics on this album are probably more personal to us than on any other record we've done.”

 PRE-ORDER POSITIVE THINKING HERE

Engineered by Jesse Gander (White Lung, Bison, Japandroids) and mastered by Heba Kadry in Brooklyn’s Timeless Mastering, Positive Thinking isn’t a total overhaul of the Pack A.D. everybody knows and loves. But making this album—it was a reinvention, an old-school reckoning, and they’re better for it. We’re all better for it. “We’ve gone back and found the place where we started from,” Miller says. “This may have been one of the most difficult albums for us personally to work on but because of that, it's also been the most comfortable. There isn't a single moment where I feel like we've done any of it for anyone but ourselves.”

Toronto's beloved alt pop duo Darcys recently unveiled their first new music in two years, the bright, summery single “Miracle” which was produced by recent Grammy and JUNO-Award winner Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Julian Casablancas) and what Clash calls anoutlandish exploration of pop ambition." Today they share the new Footloose-inspired video for “Miracle” directed by Common Good, who recently won a Much Music Video Award for their work with Majid Jordan and Drake.

“Miracle" was recorded at Red Bull Studios in Auckland, New Zealand, and is the Arts & Crafts’ recording artists’ first commercial release since 2013’s Polaris and JUNO-nominated album Warring. The track, mixed by Matty Green (The Weeknd, TV On The Radio) and mastered by Emily Lazar (Vampire Weekend, Haim), sees the band – consisting of Jason Couse and Wes Marskell – exploring its pop ambitions and drawing from long-standing influences like Prince, The Killers, MGMT, and Chromeo.

The band played their first live date in two years this May in Toronto for Red Bull Sound Select, and will continue a string of dates throughout the summer starting tomorrow with a very special performance at Wayhome Festival’s Art Walk as well as two nights in Vancouver with AWOLNATION and stops in Edmonton for Sonic Boom Festival, in Calgary for X Fest and Victoria for Rifflandia. Full tour dates can be found below with more dates to be added soon.
