Brendan Canning, founding member of Broken Social Scene, today released the second track from his upcoming solo album, Home Wrecking Years, out August 12 via Arts & Crafts. The song is available to stream today courtesy of AV Club.

“Keystone Dealers” is a soaring jazz and indie rock-inflected track that echoes melodically out of Canning’s musical imagination in waves of strange, irresistible smoothness. Horns combine with a Casio-samba rhythm while Canning’s dulcet tones stretch over the mix in cool, languid Bacharach-esque fashion.

“Keystone Dealers” is the Bossa Nova moment on the record,” says Brendan. “Justin Peroff came up with the idea for the old-school drum machine and the killer horn section was led by Liam O'Neil who was recently drafted by Kings of Leon. It's one of a few moments on the record that allows the listener some real pause and breath.”

He continues, “I'm pretty sure the song is me trying to find a correlation between a failed relationship and the destruction big oil leaves behind once the damage is done. Words just pop out sometimes and I'm left to sort through for meaning.”

The lead track off his first release since 2013’s You Gots 2 Chill“Book It To Fresno”, showcased Canning’s penchant for wall-of sound guitars and syrupy vocal melodies. “Keystone Dealers” reveals the depth of Home Wrecking Years, capturing the smart and breezy summertime feel that cloaks the record.

Meanwhile, Canning’s other band, Broken Social Scene, recently played their first full shows in a few years at Pitchfork Festival in Chicago and Panorama Music Festival in New York City, treating fans to old favourites, new music, and a couple tracks played from Canning’s new collection.

Broken Social Scene has announced they are back in the studio working on the follow-up to 2010’s Forgiveness Rock Record.

WALRUS ANNOUNCES NATIONAL TOUR DATES

HALIFAX PSYCH ROCKERS NEW RELEASE GOODBYE SOMETHING OUT NOW VIA MADIC RECORDS

“tried-and-true woozy, '60s-psych grooves … like the soundtrack to a lucid dream” Exclaim!

“a modern evolution of surf rock, with trance-inducing jangly guitar chords, Walrus just might be your next favourite group” CBC Music

“sweet and loose … pulls a lot of tricks from the Beatles’ late-60s psychedelia, but filters it through a 90s-indebted love of six-string heaviness” NOW

“an effortless trance-like repetition blended with the chaos of drug-induced frenzy” The East

It’s been a busy spring and summer for Halifax psych-rockers Walrus. In April the band hit the road with Wintersleep and Evening Hymns, and released their latest EP, Goodbye Something, on Dan Mangan’s Madic Records. The four-piece also performed multiple times at CMW and NXNE and recently finished up a string of dates in Quebec and the East Coast.

Now they are back on the road beginning with a show this evening in Montreal during Osheaga and will crisscross Central and Atlantic Canada for the duration of the summer sharing the stage with the likes of Wintersleep, Alex Calder, Matt Mays, Plants & Animals and more as well as making an appearance at Supercrawl in Hamilton. Not ones to rest for very long, Walrus will then head west in the fall with stops in Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton and more. All tour dates are listed below.

Halifax’s Walrus channels their inner psychedelia with songs that range from trance to surf. Exclaim! writes that “the band somehow mix gentle, Brian Wilson vocal melodies and orchestrations with out-of-the-blue punk thrash parts that keep listeners guessing. The high, winsome vocals and chiming 12-string Rickenbacker certainly conjured late '60s cloudy folk-pop, but the rest of the band infused the songs with sharp edges.” Their music will adhere to all levels of inebriation or consciousness. Walrus takes you swiftly into a dream you'll find yourself never wanting to wake up from.

True DIYers, throughout the last two years Walrus has played over 200 shows in clubs, dive bars, garages, and houses in the U.S. and Canada with the likes of July Talk, Will Butler, Tokyo Police Club, Buck 65, and Zeus.

3. After All
4. Where Do You Go (produced by River Tiber)
5. Find You

"'Work' has a soulful ambience that is heightened by Wilson's sighed harmonies and evocative storytelling... For any hustler on the move, 'Work' is an ode to honoring commitment, to the beauty of mastering your own destiny. Wilson is evidently doing just that." - Pitchfork

"'Work' is a song that moves slow as snowfall, a thick layer of organ harmonies are nudged toward crescendo by the lazy shuffle of drums and the quiet flicker of a guitar. For Charlotte, 'Work' isn't about the breathless, anxiety-inducing approach to getting shit done, but the courage that comes through tenacity." - The Fader

"Charlotte Day Wilson is one of those artists that reminds us you don't need to be overpowering in order to command a track. She's a master of understanding when to let her voice be the focal point, and when to let it take the backseat to her smooth, electro-soul production." - Pigeons & Planes
