Today, Jean-Michel Blais announced the vinyl release and deluxe edition of his critically acclaimed debut album Il. The expanded release, featuring two additional songs from the original recording sessions, follows a nomination for the esteemedPolaris Music Prize. Of the new track, Blais says “‘Ad claritatem Domine’ builds itself in a simple melodic and harmonic line, presented four times in an ever more complex and refined manner. Lively and playful, it unravels and feints in a lethargic but emancipating state, mirroring a past relationship that has left room for another one, for another person.”

In addition to the expanded release, Blais’ has announced a series of dates including a collaborative performance for Red Bull Music Academy with fellow Montrealer, Grammy Award nominated electronic producer CFCF. The special live performance will interpret the similarities and differences of their respective crafts, highlighting shared tendencies towards playful minimalism.

Since the April release of Il, Blais’ single “Nostos” has been streamed over 6 million times, hitting #1 on Hype Machine’sPopular chart twice, and #14 on Spotify’s Global Viral chart. He participated in Nils Frahm’s International Piano Day with a performance for the CBC and completed a month-long residency at the Art Gallery of Ontario. MORE ABOUT JEAN-MICHEL BLAIS

Jean-Michel Blais is a 31 year-old pianist from Montreal, Canada. His enchanting instrumental compositions pair the melodic pop sensibilities of Amélie-era Yann Tiersen and Arts & Crafts alumni Chilly Gonzales with the breathtaking technical skill of classical minimalists like Philip Glass and Erik Satie.

Blais grew up in a rural French Catholic town in Quebec absent of Culture save for a giant Encyclopedia he’d read feverishly as a child. At age 9, Blais began tinkering on his family’s organ, improvisation, and at age 11 started to write original compositions and taking piano lessons. A natural talent, by 17 he was invited to the Trois-Rivieres Music Conservatory and began training as a classical pianist. However, Blais was entering the throes of teenage rebellion and found the constraints of formal training cumbersome rigid structure. Gravitating towards experimentation, Blais wasn’t content to be told how to play, and not to improvise or compose.

A few years later, he attracted the attention of famed playwright and director, Robert Lepage, who introduced Blais to the who’s who of Quebec’s entertainment industry. With no particular plan for a music career, he quickly took a step back and decided it was time for more explorations.

He moved to Europe in his mid-20s living in Berlin and spent six months in South America. During that time he’d intermittently compose music with long gaps of not even touching a piano. Blais finally settled in Montreal where he rediscovered his love for composing and performing which caught the ear of Arts & Crafts. Written and recorded at home over two years by improvising every day, Jean-Michel Blais’ debut album, Il, was released on April 8th 2016.

Brendan Canning, co-founder of the seminal alt-rock collective known as Broken Social Scene, today released a #NSFW visual take on the song, “Book it To Fresno” off of his critically acclaimed new record, Home Wrecking Years, out now via Arts & Crafts.

The video is a tender, yet controversial look at the relationship between a father and son, set to the backdrop of a nudist colony. With its cast of real-life nudist community members, the video pairs the triumphant sound of “Book It To Fresno” with a beautifully unadorned story of acceptance and freedom.

Brendan Canning told The Fader, "I had never met them (the directing team of Luke McCutcheon & Mike Yablonski) before they came over to my house one evening to pitch the idea of a young man looking for his estranged father at a nudist resort. Once they told me about their 'textile-free' meeting with the manager of the resort as per his request, they gained my trust and confidence instantly. All I asked was to make it look cool and in the end they went above and beyond my request. Top marks!"

Luke and Mike added, "We've wanted to explore the theme of naturism in a video for quite some time now and when this song came around it felt like a great fit. We were also just tired of making videos with our clothes on. Thanks to the community at Bare Oaks (the nudist colony where the video was shot) we were able to make that dream come true.”

Canning’s other band, Broken Social Scene, recently played their first full shows in a few years at Pitchfork Festival in Chicago and Panorama Music Festival in New York City, treating fans to old favourites, new music, and a couple tracks played from Canning’s new collection. Broken Social Scene has announced they are back in the studio working on the follow-up to 2010’s Forgiveness Rock Record.

TASSEOMANCY ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM, REVEALS FIRST SINGLE

Tasseomancy, aka Canadian sisters Sari and Romi Lightman, will release their new album, Do Easy, on November 18 through a new label co-venture between Hand Drawn Dracula and Outside Music in Canada and Bella Union for the rest of the world. The first single and title track from the upcoming album is available to stream today courtesy of The Fader.

“Do Easy”, was “Inspired by the wild flamingos of all the night karaoke soirees and the domestic manifesto of William S Burroughs's The Discipline of Do Easy,” says Romi Lightman. Written from Romy Lightman's sub-conscious in a basement apartment she says that “Burroughs's doctrine on finding ‘the easy way’ struck me as something rare and I hung onto it like a piece of protection. Later on, I discovered that Genesis P-Orridge believed this text to be one of the greatest magic techniques for retraining the mind. Endorsed by Occultists, stoners, freaks, the ultra zen and the highly sensitive, ‘Do Easy’ attempts to infuse the mundane with a gentle joy and a sense of simple delight.” Tasseomancy's choral interpretation was created with all this in mind. Additional vocals by Sari Lightman and arrangements by band members Johnny Spence on synth/piano and Evan Cartwright on drums with musical accompaniment by Brodie West on saxophone.

For the seasoned loners, stoners, and lackadaisically laid, Do Easy was written as a dead-beat anthem for a generation who was told that anything is possible after the possibility slows. Written in Toronto and Montreal, the album was created as a lamp shade of hope; of soft survivalism. Serene, strange and magnetically sung, it honours its free-thinking forebears without being weighed down by them, creating immersive worlds of loving allusion.

Soft synths and crystalline harmonies merge hypnotically on “Dead Can Dance and Neil Young”, an invitation to ‘fade into folk song’. If folk song this is, it’s folk of great idiosyncrasy, where vocoded chorales provide atmospheric shading and alto-saxophones drift like cigarette smoke from a David Lynch dream-film. Between the new age synth of “Claudine & Annie”, the ambient swoon of “29 Palms”, Kate Bush-like prog-psych of “Missoula” and gently lapping title-track, Do Easy plays like pop from a parallel world.

Sisters Sari and Romy Lightman are former members of queer cold-wave band, Austra. Channelling their former forays in psychedelic folk into a kind of lushly accessible, warmly experimental dream-pop along with bandmates Johnny Spence and Evan Cartwright, they explore manipulated sounds, all with mood in mind. Assisted by friends Brodie West (alto-sax), Ryan Driver (flute), Simone Schmidt (voice of a young Neil Young), and Alex Cowan (Blue Hawaii) that exploration reaches full bloom on Do Easy, the sound of a band hitting their richly imagined, luxuriously executed stride. And, wealth of evocative references included, making it all sound easy.
