After recently sharing a stunning video for the song “Wealth In The Country” while on a western Canadian tour Jenny Berkel is now revealing a live performance video for Pale Moon Kid standout “St. Denis” courtesy of Exclaim!. The acclaimed songwriter is celebrating by announcing album release shows in Montreal on September 30 at La Vitrola and inToronto on October 2 at The Drake which will include a special solo performance by Jim Bryson. Currently, Berkel is in Europe for the first of two extensive tours.

Of the “St. Denis” video Berkel says, “after a lengthy outdoor location hunt in the GTA, a good friend of mine offered us his beautiful (and giant) deck in Toronto. It was one of the first hot and humid days of summer; it was also the first time we added Ben Harney  (bass) to the band,” she recalls. “We rehearsed the song while Alexei Golob filmed and eventually caught this take, just as daylight was disappearing. Special thanks to Ian Romano and Ryan Fields for their work on capturing the audio.”

Jenny Berkel’s writing is at once gentle and hard-hitting. Her lush and low voice ornaments her poetry with melodies that soar high and clear before spilling back down again. Out now on Pheromone Recordings, Pale Moon Kid was recorded with Daniel Romano at the peak of summer in Welland, ON, where they were joined in studio by Berkel’s sister, Kay Berkel, who was an important part of making the album. Steeped in sparkling guitars, sparse piano, pulsing bass, and percussion, this glowing new collection reveals writing that has grown even sharper and more lyrical.

Born in the heart of Ontario’s lush forests and fields, Berkel’s music has drawn her across the country, experiencing dramatic changes in landscape. This constant shifting finds its rest in her songs; her lyrics are dreamy and piercing, shimmering with memories, and glittering with the quiet solitude of a night sky. “The songs on this album come from different homes across Canada,” says Berkel. “The quiet of rural Ontario, the open prairies, the rush of Toronto, and a small apartment in Montreal's Parc Extension. My life and the stories surrounding me were constantly and quickly changing. This shifting landscape of geography and people finds its home on Pale Moon Kid.”

HARPACASH & THE MORALS SHARE NEW VIDEO FOR “MODERN COMFORTABLE”

BARRIE, ONTARIO THREE PIECE TO RELEASE NEW LP, LAMPS, VIA LATENT RECORDINGS ON SEPTEMBER 23

“There’s a serenity to the music of HarpAcash & the Morals, an indie folk-rock trio hailing from Barrie...perhaps it’s time to take a closer look north of the 401” - The Globe & Mail

As HarpAcash & the Morals prepare to release their highly anticipated debut LP, Lamps, via Latent Records, audiences are treated to another glimpse of what’s to come with the video for album cut “Modern Comfortable”. “As soon as I heard the song ..., it felt a bit like an adventure,” says Video Director Barsin Aghajan. “We knew we needed a touch of naivety, innocence, and heart to bring this song to life visually.”

"I love the purity of the older sibling-type girl engaging in imaginative play with the young boys,” says lead vocalist HarpAcash. “We so easily let go of our childhood as it’s reflected in the aggression of the other teenagers. I directly relate to the young girls' protective nature, her perseverance and her peaceful demeanour.” Drummer Dan Trickett adds, "as our culture moves with increasing speed towards a technology driven existence, it's easy to forget the simple joys that can be found by connecting with people and the environment that surrounds us. Barsin has managed to capture that feeling, and highlights how fleeting those moments can be.”

Due out on September 23, Lamps was recorded with Michael Timmins (Cowboy Junkies) at helm in studio, lead vocalist HarpAcash, guitarist Todd Jeffrey, and drummer Trickett gathered to record the heartbreaking harmonies, graceful guitars, and the idiosyncratic minimalist percussion that forms the album.

It was after supporting the Cowboy Junkies on a string of dates that Michael Timmins was impressed by the trio. “Their music pulled me from backstage and compelled me to listen,” says Timmins. “HarpAcash's vocals alone are a force of nature, but joined with Todd Jeffery's angular song structures and Dan Trickett's powerful, multi-dimensional drumming, their music becomes wholly original."

HarpAcash & the Morals recorded their first EP, Music Tree Life Understanding, in 2012 with producer Steve Singh (Ron Hawkins, Brendan Canning). They followed it up by taking to the road with Elliott Brood, The Strumbellas, and the Cowboy Junkies, and secured a residency at Toronto’s Cameron House. Recently the trio also released a series of videos, live in studio, recording a few covers for the Latent Uncovers project. Premiering recently was the trio’s take on Justin Bieber’sWhat Do You Mean” joining its versions of Jon Belion’s “All Time Low”, Drake’s “One Dance”, Cowboy Junkies “Blue Moon (Revisited)”, and Justin Biebers’ “Love Yourself”.

As promised Blackie and The Rodeo Kings are set to deliver the companion piece to their 2011 collaboration album King And Queens. Where that album featured guest appearances from some of the band’s favourite female singers, Kings And Kings features some of the band’s best ‘guy’ friends from the world of roots, blues, and country. Each one of them an accomplished ‘king’ in their realm of creative endeavours and in many cases absolute ‘king’ legends in the entertainment industry.

“Some of these were fellows we knew well and had made lots of music with like Bruce Cockburn, Buddy Miller, and Keb Mo, and some were new heroes and discoveries like Fantastic Negrito and Dallas Green,” says Colin Linden. “Some, were icons who I had shared some guitaring with like Vince Gill, Rodney Crowell, Eric Church, and Raul Malo. And some were icons new and preloved who joined us out of kindness I suppose, like Nick Lowe and Jason Isbell. And some were my dear pals I work on the Nashville TV show with; Chris Carmack, Charles Esten, Jonathan Jackson, and Sam Palladio.”

Set for release October 7 via File Under: Music, the first single “Beautiful Scars” reminds us of Tom Wilson’s Lee Harvey Osmond albumBeautiful Scars. Wilson jokes that he wrote the title track of his album after it’s release. The song itself is inspired by novelist Miriam Toews benefits from an amazing vocal performance by Dallas Green (City And Colour).

Kings and Kings kicks off with the “Live By The Song”, which is simply the autobiography of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. A rarity in the fact that it was written by all three-principal members, Colin Linden, Tom Wilson, and Stephen Fearing, “Live By The Song” is really the biography of every working musician/songwriter committed to the ‘life’. Perfectly featuring the voice of Grammy Award winner Rodney Crowell and Fearing on the lead vocal, the song conjures the winding path of uncertainty faced by all the players who really had no other choice but to follow it.

Songwriter’s songwriter, Nick Lowe, brings an elegance to “Secret of A Long Lasting Love”, taking the lead throughout the song, while the spirit of the late Roy Orbison can be detected in the gorgeous rendition of Fearing’s “High Wire” featuring the impeccable voice of Raul Malo (The Mavericks).

“A Woman Gets More Beautiful” situates long time friends and collaborators Linden and Bruce Cockburn. On this track the pair philosophize on the appreciation of timeless beauty, slipping from English to French to English, abundant with Cockburn’s masterful guitar interplay.

On every Blackie and The Rodeo Kings album there is a song penned by their namesake, the late great Willie P. Bennett. “This Lonesome Feeling”, a classic cowboy lament, gets an assist from multi-Grammy Award winner and Country Music Hall of Fame legend Vince Gill.

“Long Walk To Freedom” is Fearing with the iconic Kevin Moore (aka Keb Mo), who is a long time friend and collaborator of Linden’s. Groove and melody reign under fantastic manipulations by Oakland’s Fantastic Negrito on Wilson’s “Bitter and Low”.

As a technical supervisor on the TV show Nashville, Linden has spent hours with the cast helping the actors and musicians bring their best to the screen and live stage. “For Where The River Rolls”, he gathered the crew at the day job around the microphone to bring their vocal skills to the track. The result is an upbeat and fun celebration with Linden, Sam Palladio, Chris Carmack, Charles Esten, and Jonathan Jacksonall sharing verses and harmonies.

Both Eric Church on “Bury My Heart” and Jason Isbell on “Land Of The Living (Hamilton Ontario 2016)” bring a real contemporary country music voice and feel to Blackie and The Rodeo Kings. Like every King on the album, these guys can sing the lights out and they do.

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings originally formed in 1996 when Linden, Fearing, and Wilson came together to record what was suppose to be a one-off tribute album to the great Canadian songwriter Willie P. Bennett. At the time, all three members were deeply committed to burgeoning solo careers that they had no intentions of putting on hold, and had no plans to turn Blackie into an ongoing concern.

Now twenty years later, 8 albums, one Juno Award, and several Juno Award nominations under their belts, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings have organically evolved into one of the finest roots-oriented bands in North America. Blackie and the Rodeo Kings remains one of Canada’s greatest musical treasures.
