GORD DOWNIE ANNOUNCES RECONCILIATION FUND WITH WENJACK FAMILY, SHARES FIRST SONG FROM 'SECRET PATH'

DOWNIE AND WENJACK FAMILIES LAUNCH FUND FOCUSED ON RECONCILIATION

GORD DOWNIE PREVIEWS “THE STRANGER”, FIRST CHAPTER OF SECRET PATH ALBUM, BOOK & FILM

INTERVIEW WITH PETER MANSBRIDGE AIRS ON CBC’S THE NATIONAL TONIGHT

Mike and Gord Downie and the family of Chanie Wenjack today announce the creation of a new Fund focused on creating new relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund is part of Gord Downie’s legacy, commitment and recognition of the wounds that will take generations to heal.

“Generations grew up not hearing about what’s happening in the North and in Indigenous communities everywhere. The next generation can’t be raised the same way,” said Gord Downie. “It is my hope that the Fund will do its part in starting to bridge some of the gaps that exist between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.”

At the closing concert of The Tragically Hip’s Man Machine Poem Tour on August 20, Gord Downie called upon Canadians to look North and “do something”. He since travelled to Ogoki Post to meet with the family of Chanie Wenjack. Chanie was a young boy who died in October 1966, walking the railroad tracks, trying to escape from the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School. Chanie’s story will be told through Secret Path, an album and a graphic novel that will be released on October 18, with an animated film adaptation on October 23.

“It’s time for us to acknowledge and help the people we were trained to ignore. It’s time to do something,” said Mike Downie. “This Fund will help make this a reality and will act as a catalyst to forge relationships for reconciliation.”

“Our family and community are grateful that Gord is lending his voice to this important story,” the Wenjack Family said in a statement. Several members of the Wenjack Family will be present at the inaugural Secret Path performance at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on October 18. A second concert will take place at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto on Friday, October 21.

The Fund is currently operating out of the Toronto Foundation, with a majority of Indigenous peoples on its Board of Directors. It is being guided by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.

Donations to the Fund are now being accepted at downiewenjack.caThe Fund is also on Twitter and Facebook.

The fund announcement is accompanied by “The Stranger”, the first full song and chapter of Secret PathAdapted from Gord Downie’s album and Jeff Lemire’s graphic novel, The Secret Path chronicles the heartbreaking story of Chanie’s residential school experience and subsequent death as he escapes and attempts to walk 600 km home to his family. The film will be broadcast by CBC in an hour-long commercial-free television special on Sunday, October 23 at 9pm (9:30 NT) and streamed worldwide at cbc.ca/secretpath at 9pm ET.

Heavy Metal Sunshine draws from many diverse wells – pop, noise, soul, all with an eye to the baroque, and continues to expand into new territory. The album was captured at Edmontone Studios by Jesse Brandon Northey, mixed by Renny Wilson at Value Sound, and mastered by Harris Newman at Grey Market Mastering.

Throughout their past three EPs Diamond Mind have won audiences with the unique character of their songs, recorded in environments ranging from attic bedrooms to storied, established studios. The songs on Heavy Metal Sunshine echo this varied topography, ranging in content from intimate, confidential entries, elaborate pseudo-histories and haunting character sketches.

DANNY MICHEL RECORDS NEW ALBUM IN THE CANADIAN ARCTIC

ACCLAIMED SONGWRITER DANNY MICHEL TRAVERSES THE ARCTIC OCEAN WITH

CANADIAN ASTRONAUT CHRIS HADFIELD ABOARD THE INFAMOUS RUSSIAN ICE-BREAKER

"KAPITAN KHLEBNIKOV“ TO RECORD A NEW ALBUM AS PART OF "GENERATOR ARCTIC"

DANNY MICHEL AND COL. HADFIELD TO DETAIL THEIR EXPERIENCES LIVE ON STAGE
TORONTO AT THE AGO ON NOVEMBER 2

KITCHENER AT CENTRE IN THE SQUARE ON NOVEMBER 16

A few weeks ago Danny Michel returned from the trip of a lifetime with Canadian Astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield who invited him to join Generator Arctic, an expedition traversing the Arctic Ocean aboard the Russian ice-breaker Kapitan Khlebnikov with scientists, photographers, writers, videographers. The mission was to capture the experience and share it with the rest of world. Inspired by the immediate surroundings Danny built a makeshift studio in cabin 712 (comprised of camera tripods, hair ties, and gaffing tape) and from Grise Fjord and Aujuittuq (The most northerly community in Canada & one of the coldest inhabited places in the world) to Eureka Sound, Resolute, Nunavut and the Franklin graves at Beechey Island, Danny drew inspiration from this rare frozen corner of the our planet and captured it in song.

To fully comprehend the experience and the conditions of the expedition, Danny has captured his trip in the latest installment of his series Dan’s Space Van. The episode also features a performance of “Nobody Rules You” from the deck of the Khlebnikov.

For the next 18 days, Danny recorded in his tiny cabin and invited some guests to cram into the ‘studio’ to share their talents, including Col. Hadfield (singing in Russian), and the dishwashers from the Khlebnikov kitchen. The tracks captured there made their way back to Canada to begin collaboration with composer Rob Carli who, aside from being a member of Danny’s band, is one of Canada’s most in-demand composers with 15 Gemini and Canadian Screen Award nominations, 5 Gemini Awards2 Canadian Screen Awards and 3 SOCAN Awards for domestic television.

Rob’s addition of brass and string arrangements take Danny to new ground, or ice, and is quite literally explorational. For the finished album, aptly titled Khlebnikov, imagine a classical-based, Tom Waits meets Tim Burton feel. The album itself may also qualify for a Guinness World Record for the most northern album ever recorded. Keep your fingers crossed! Stay tuned for more details about Khlebnikov, coming soon.

In November, Hadfield will be joined by Danny and other passengers from the expedition for a pair of events which share their experiences aboard the Khlebnikov. The team will be in Toronto on November 2 at the AGO, and at Kitchener’s Centre In The Square on November 16.

ABOUT GENERATOR ARCTIC

Generator is at its core an idea. The idea that the niche has a great deal to offer the mainstream. This year, we intend to push that idea to its limits. The image of the Arctic is in a feedback loop. The narrative has been written before filming even begins. Audiences don’t need to watch to understand, and have in turn simply stopped listening. Nobody wants another documentary, they want something worth witnessing.

Astronaut Chris Hadfield has traversed the Arctic Ocean with scientists, photographers, writers, musicians, and videographers to capture a unique experience unlike ever before. From the south of Greenland to northern Resolute, Generator Arctic has created a multimedia imprint of a rare time and space, seen through eyes who have never been exposed to it before.
