“tried-and-true woozy, '60s-psych grooves … like the soundtrack to a lucid dream” Exclaim!

“a modern evolution of surf rock, with trance-inducing jangly guitar chords, Walrus just might be your next favourite group” CBC Music

“sweet and loose … pulls a lot of tricks from the Beatles’ late-60s psychedelia, but filters it through a 90s-indebted love of six-string heaviness” NOW

“an effortless trance-like repetition blended with the chaos of drug-induced frenzy” The East

As we arrive into a time of tricks, treats, and pumpkin spice everything, Halifax psych-rockers Walrus are celebrating with a seasonal video of their own for “Close My Eyes”, from their latest EP, Goodbye Something, out now on Dan Mangan’s Madic Records.

Directed by Torin Langen, who is known to capture the darker side of things, the video for “Close My Eyes” features monsters, pumpkins, and monster pumpkins. "This project has been a bit of a change of pace from my previous work, in that it's probably the most family-friendly film I've made thus far,” says Langen. “That being said it was really refreshing to create a piece that captured my favourite aspects of the Halloween season, and Walrus' dreamy soundtrack made it a joy to edit. And of course thanks so, so much to my team members Sarah Pugsley, Joe Parente and Delfin Jenn, without whom this wouldn't have been possible."

Currently, Walrus are on tour across Canada, and will continue heading east till the end of the year, making stops at M For Montreal and Nova Scotia Music Week, where they have recently been nominated for a Music Nova Scotia Award for Alternative Recording Of The Year. Full tour dates can be found below.

Walrus spent much of the summer on tour with the likes of Besnard Lakes, Wintersleep, Evening Hymns, Alex Calder, Matt Mays, and Plants & Animals, stopping along the way at Osheaga, Supercrawl, and many more.

Their latest EP, Goodbye Something, channels their inner psychedelia with songs that range from trance to surf. Exclaim! writes that “the band somehow mix gentle, Brian Wilson vocal melodies and orchestrations with out-of-the-blue punk thrash parts that keep listeners guessing. The high, winsome vocals and chiming 12-string Rickenbacker certainly conjured late '60s cloudy folk-pop, but the rest of the band infused the songs with sharp edges.” Their music will adhere to all levels of inebriation or consciousness. Walrus takes you swiftly into a dream you'll find yourself never wanting to wake up from.

TELLS THE STORY OF CHANIE WENJACK, AN INDIGENOUS BOY WHO DIED RUNNING AWAY FROM RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL FIFTY YEARS AGO

Secret Path is ten songs that tell the story of Chanie Wenjack (miscalled “Charlie” by his teachers), a twelve year-old boy who died fleeing the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School near Kenora, Ontario, fifty years ago, walking home to the family he was taken from over 400 miles away. Downie was introduced to the story by his brother Mike Downie, who shared with him Ian Adams’ Maclean’s article from February 6, 1967, “The Lonely Death of Charlie Wenjack.”

“Chanie haunts me. His story is Canada’s story. This is about Canada… The next hundred years are going to be painful as we get to know Chanie Wenjack and thousands like him – as we find out about ourselves, about all of us – but only when we do can we truly call ourselves, Canada.” – Gord Downie

Secret Path acknowledges a dark part of Canada’s history – the long-suppressed mistreatment of Indigenous children and families by the residential school system – with the hope of starting our country on a road to reconciliation. The goal of Secret Path is that it educates Canadians young and old on this omitted part of the country's history, urging us all to play an active role in the preservation of Indigenous lives and culture.

Previously only available in Deluxe (vinyl & book) and Book (with album download) editions (out October 18), the music of Secret Path is now released on Download and Streaming services, and can be pre-ordered on CD and standard LP formats (outDecember 2). The premium LP features the stand-alone vinyl with ten special lyric posters featuring Gord’s handwritten lyrics and bonus illustrations by graphic novelist Jeff Lemire.

“This album is awesome and you should make sure to hear it" - Stereogum

“...it's an uncool formula for the current musical climate. It's also as endearing and earnest as anything else Shad had put out over the years.” - Exclaim!

“All of a sudden, Shad does '80s New Romanticism. And it's really great. Who knew this guy could sing so sweetly? Should I even be surprised?” - Chart Attack

Earlier this year, rapper, radio host, and now soft rock singer, Shad released a surprise album under the name Your Boy Tony Braxton. Now, he’s sharing the video for album track “Good (Enough)” which premiered yesterday via Noisey.

The video, directed by Justin Boradbent, takes us on a trip back to the 90s and features Broken Social Scene’s Brendan Canning trying to rent a copy of Speed 2 on VHS. "So, this is a song about a man who's just beginning to understand what's behind his loneliness, insecurity, and rage," Shad tells Noisey. While Broadbent added "I wanted to make a video that affirmed it was ok to like things like Speed 2. We often get in our heads about our futures or art making and need to take a step back and truly enjoy things for what they are."

Your Boy’s also taking this show to the stage for string of dates in Toronto on Dec 8, 9, and 10 with Tokyo Police Club. Tickets for the show are available via Ticketfly.

Out now via Arts & Crafts, Adult Contempt is “"a lovely collection of songs that reminds me of Frank Ocean’s Nostalgia. Ultra transposed from a modern R&B context into bright, richly arranged throwback pop in the vein of Scritti Politti and Prefab Sprout,” writes Stereogum. Shad himself described it as “a soft rock album, inspired by late 80s / early 90s pop/rock. The lyrical themes are mainly masculinity, love, and maturation.”

Recorded in the spring of 2014 with frequent collaborator Matthew Johnston, in his guest bedroom, Shad claims the musical inspiration for Adult Contempt comes “from the first things I ever heard on the radio. Vague memories of Michael Penn, Terence Trent D’arby, The Cure, Bryan Adams, Janet Jackson, and others that evoke a smile and a nostalgic sense in me. Lyrically, I have some fun here and there but a lot of the lyrics are just honest, simply-put musings – grappling with insecurity, love, and trying to become a better person.”
