Today, Royal Canoe premiered the new video for “Walk Out On The Water”, from their latest album, Something Got Lost Between Here And The Orbit, courtesy of Noisey. The video, performed by the eminently talented Anton Sokalski, follows the transformation of a young boy from marooned orphan to broadway star in his quest for water as he dances through the desert. Noisey says “the visuals are... spiritually soaked; a metaphor almost for keeping one's head high during times of struggle.”

“We worked with director Dan Huiting and choreographer Kaja Irwin to create something that really focuses on the defiance of the character,” says Matt Peters. “The dance is his way of making a game out of the journey – coping with his plight by feigning confidence and bravado.” The video itself was shot in Manitoba’s Spirit Sands desert and Birds Hill Park, which Peters says “sounds far-fetched, but there is actually a desert in Manitoba. I think everyone involved in the shoot felt an affinity with the character as we dragged film equipment across the dunes under ridiculous heat and fought against time. As per usual so many amazing people donated so much time, energy and old skateboards so we could pull off another one of these things.”

"Music video directors like myself get sent a lot of songs, so it’s easy to get a little bit nonchalant about listening to everything, just from the sheer volume that comes my way,” says director Dan Huiting. “I listened to this song with the same standard insouciance, but after about a minute in I had to stop and pay attention. This is a good song. A really good song. ‘Ok, you've got my attention you, Canadian fuckers.’”

“The band laid out an idea about a boy in a post-apocalyptic desert land, which made me instantly think of Luke Skywalker's plight on Tatooine. The guys also told me about a desert in Manitoba. I know, I know, I had a hard time believing it, too. But it’s there. From the story, to the execution, all the way through the editing process, these guys were present for everything and gave everything they had to make it happen. I really respect that. This video was a true collaboration, in every sense of the word.”

Royal Canoe just returned home this week from a lengthy run of North American tour dates, which was not without incident. The band had it’s entire trailer packed full of instrument, gear, merchandise, and their own clothes stolen from a hotel parking lot just outside Montreal. Given the disaster, the band was able to rally in three short days by renting, borrowing, or purchasing everything they needed to continue their tour. While much of the loss was covered by insurance, the band released an EP of B-Sides from their latest album, Something Got Lost Between Here And The Orbit, to try and recoup some of the loses. The Agassiz EP, so-named after the trailer which was stolen, was available to purchase via Indiegogo.

With a successful North American tour completed, the band are turning their attention to another project which might seem quite of out the ordinary. Together with Tom Keenan, Royal Canoe has written and arranged new music which will be performed live as the backdrop to a contemporary production of Shakespeare’s Richard II titled “Am I Not King?”. The staging is the brainchild of director Christopher Brauer and will run from December 14-18 at the West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg. Royal Canoe’s latest album, Something Got Lost Between Here And The Orbit, was released last month via Nevado Records, to much acclaim. BeatRoute claims that the magic “lies in the band’s ability to make infectious tunes without compromising their desire to boldly tinker,” while the Winnipeg Free Press called it “funky, daring and often surprising...No two tracks sound the same and each contains its own little universe.” Exclaim! also called it “orchestral, theatrical, experimental...Something Got Lost Between Here And The Orbit presents a sound all their own that's distinct and, for the most part, unparalleled.”

Almost three years have passed since the release of Royal Canoe’s sophomore album Today We're Believers. Those years were full. The band played 200 shows, which included tours with the likes of Alt J and Bombay Bicycle Club, and stops at major festivals like Bonaroo, Iceland Airwaves, and Osheaga. The hard work paid off; Today We're Believers received critical acclaim, was nominated for Alternative Album of the Year at the JUNOs, and won Best Independent Album at the Western Canadian Music Awards.

Secret Path is ten songs that tell the story of Chanie Wenjack (miscalled “Charlie” by his teachers), a twelve year-old boy who died fleeing the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School near Kenora, Ontario, fifty years ago, walking home to the family he was taken from over 400 miles away. Downie was introduced to the story by his brother Mike Downie, who shared with him Ian Adams’ Maclean’s story from February 6, 1967, “The Lonely Death of Charlie Wenjack.”

“Chanie haunts me. His story is Canada’s story. This is about Canada… The next hundred years are going to be painful as we get to know Chanie Wenjack and thousands like him – as we find out about ourselves, about all of us – but only when we do can we truly call ourselves, Canada.” – Gord Downie

To read Gord Downie’s full statement on Secret Path from September 9, 2016, go HERE.

Secret Path acknowledges a dark part of Canada’s history – the long-suppressed mistreatment of Indigenous children and families by the residential school system – with the hope of starting our country on a road to reconciliation. Every year as Chanie Wenjack is remembered, the hope for Secret Path is that it educates all Canadians young and old on this omitted part of the country's history, urging us all to play an active role in the preservation of Indigenous lives and culture in Canada.

Secret Path is now available in Deluxe (vinyl & book), and Book (with album download) editions, as well as on Download and Streaming services, and can be pre-ordered on CD and standard LP formats (out December 2). The premium LP features the stand-alone vinyl with ten special lyric posters featuring Gord’s handwritten lyrics and bonus illustrations by graphic novelist Jeff Lemire.

These funds are dedicated to finding missing Indigenous children.

Mike and Gord Downie and the family of Chanie Wenjack are also raising money for the newly created Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF). The Fund operates out of the Toronto Foundation and focuses on cross-cultural education to support healing and recovery. It is guided by and will also directly support the NCTR.

The DWF embodies Gord Downie’s commitment to improving the lives of First Peoples. The Fund will foster new relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, creating a pathway to reconciliation.

The venerable Blackie & The Rodeo Kings are all set to hit the road to support their latest record, Kings And Kings. Colin Linden, Tom Wilson, and Stephen Fearing will begin their cross Canada tour on February 25 at Massey Hall. Full tour dates can be found below and tickets go on sale on November 18 and can be purchased at www.blackieandtherodeokings.com

Out now via File Under: Music, the trio’s latest album, Kings And Kings, is the companion piece to their 2011 collaboration album King And Queens. Where that album featured guest appearances from some of the band’s favourite female singers, this one features some of the band’s best ‘guy’ friends from the world of roots, blues, and country. Each one of them an accomplished ‘king’ in their realm of creative endeavours and in many cases absolute ‘king’ legends in the entertainment industry.

Dallas Green, Eric Church, Raul Malo, Bruce Cockburn, Fantastic Negrito, Nick Lowe, Jason Isbell, Vince Gill, Buddy Miller, Keb Mo, Rodney Crowell, and the men of the TV show Nashville have all lent their voices to the album. Exclaim! says Kings And Kings is so full of great songs that “it's difficult to single out highlights on an album devoid of lowlights.”

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings originally formed in 1996 when Linden, Fearing, and Wilson came together to record what was suppose to be a one-off tribute album to the great Canadian songwriter Willie P. Bennett. At the time, all three members were deeply committed to burgeoning solo careers that they had no intentions of putting on hold, and had no plans to turn Blackie into an ongoing concern.

Now twenty years later, 8 albums, one Juno Award, and several Juno Award nominations under their belts, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings have organically evolved into one of the finest roots-oriented bands in North America, remaining one of Canada’s greatest musical treasures.
