With only a few weeks remaining until the release of her sophomore album, This Island, acclaimed songwriter Alejandra Ribera is sharing a new track from the record. “The Undertow” is inspired by the film The Danish Girl. “The morning after I saw the film I wrote that song and it was done by evening,” says Ribera. “I wanted to write about the kind of love that is so immense that it inspires you to give everything you have to help the one you love - realize who they are meant to be, knowing full well that when they do, they will leave you.”

Alejandra Ribera has been writing about the unexpected places we find light since the release of her critically acclaimed debut album La boca. In her sophomore release This Island, the award-winning songwriter continues her exploration of luminescence - this time leaving the depths of mythological waters and delving firmly into the experience of the human heart. She cites some unlikely influences as inspiring her approach to this recording – a speech by actress Tilda Swinton at the Rothko Chapel, a documentary about performance artist Marina Abramović and studying movement in Paris with one of Pina Bausch’s earliest devotees.

Due out on January 27 via Pheromone Recordings, This Island was recorded at a studio in rural Ontario where she and the band lived and recorded in the depths of winter. That vast Canadian landscape is audible from the opening track and woven throughout much of the album. Reminiscent of early Damien Rice in its delicate and spacious arrangements we also hear the influence of contemporaries like Rufus Wainwright and Fiona Apple in This Island’s sophisticated melodies.

Ribera's reputation for raw and emotive vocals has brought repeated comparisons to Tom Waits from the critics over the years. In “Blood Moon Rising” she harnesses that palpable intensity right to the hem with an almost athletic ability that leaves hairs standing on end. With horn arrangements written by Bryden Baird (Feist), This Island also brings us Ribera’s most accessible and up-tempo songwriting to date, perhaps the feature that most distinguishes it from her previous work.

“Carry Me,” “Will Not Drown,” and “Led Me To You” (which runs seven verses deep and reads rather like a Leonard Cohen poem set to a bluegrass jam) are probably the best examples of this new-found unabashed levity. And then there are her trademark heart-breaking lyrics that cut to the quick with love songs like “The Undertow” and “Undeclared War” The words you left metastasized, I cannot breath my hands are tied…’ swelling and subsiding in lush waves of strings, acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies.

There’s a timeless approach to the production which Ribera entrusted mixer Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow) and engineer L. Stu Young (Prince) to help her achieve. “I wanted to make a record that sounded classic, simple and unencumbered by the production trends of the day. I knew it would take courage to strip everything down and so I needed a very particular team that would push me every step of the way.” Equal parts subtle and nourishing, all these elements were carefully crafted with her long time collaborators and Montreal-based band Jean-Sebastien Williams and Cédric Dind-Lavoie. With their talent in tow Ribera has created This Island, a place she invites us to visit, to dream and to celebrate that light that she is seeking wherever she goes.

Today, Jean-Michel Blais shares the official visuals for the single “il”, taken from his acclaimed debut album of the same name. Directed and produced by DTO Films, the video presents a series of quiet, meditative moments that become increasingly tense as they’re examined closer. Of the track, Blais says:

"’Who's il?’ became a recurrent question revealing both the listener's curiosity and its difficulty to tolerate ambiguity. Instead of answering it, the clip rather juxtaposes many possibilities of what it could have signified, evoking to the viewer a myriad of incoherent narrations. Confronted to this Absence (of meaning) the viewer therefore struggles to reunite those scattered fragments into an impossible entity, meanwhile becoming the artist itself. So, who's il?"

Blais recently performed a sold out headline show at Toronto’s Great Hall and a sold out collaborative performance in Montreal for Red Bull Music Academy with Grammy-nominated electronic producer CFCF.

Since the April release of Il, Blais’ single “Nostos” has been streamed over 10 million times on Spotify, hitting #1 on Hype Machine’s Popular chart twice, and #14 on Spotify’s Global Viral chart. The album debuted #1 on the Canadian Billboard Classical chart, was long-listed for a Polaris Music Prize, and landed on TIME Magazine’s top ten albums of 2016. Blais participated in Nils Frahm’s International Piano Day with a performance for the CBC and completed a month-long residency at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

MORE ABOUT JEAN-MICHEL BLAIS

Jean-Michel Blais is a 31 year-old pianist from Montreal, Canada. His enchanting instrumental compositions pair the melodic pop sensibilities of Amélie-era Yann Tiersen and Arts & Crafts alumni Chilly Gonzales with the breathtaking technical skill of classical minimalists like Philip Glass and Erik Satie.

Blais grew up in a rural French Catholic town in Quebec absent of Culture save for a giant Encyclopedia he’d read feverishly as a child. At age 9, Blais began tinkering on his family’s organ, improvisation, and at age 11 started to write original compositions and taking piano lessons. A natural talent, by 17 he was invited to the Trois-Rivieres Music Conservatory and began training as a classical pianist. However, Blais was entering the throes of teenage rebellion and found the constraints of formal training cumbersome rigid structure. Gravitating towards experimentation, Blais wasn’t content to be told how to play, and not to improvise or compose.

A few years later, he attracted the attention of famed playwright and director, Robert Lepage, who introduced Blais to the who’s who of Quebec’s entertainment industry. With no particular plan for a music career, he quickly took a step back and decided it was time for more explorations.

He moved to Europe in his mid-20s living in Berlin and spent six months in South America. During that time he’d intermittently compose music with long gaps of not even touching a piano. Blais finally settled in Montreal where he rediscovered his love for composing and performing which caught the ear of Arts & Crafts. Written and recorded at home over two years by improvising every day, Jean-Michel Blais’ debut album, Il, was released on April 8th 2016.

Since releasing his last album, Early Riser, Jerry Leger has taken a break from the road and spent time making music with his side project, The Del Fi’s. However, Leger and his band, The Situation, have been working on a new album which is due out later this year, so the time has come for them to “get back into the swing of things a little, casually,” quips Leger. And so, every Wednesday this January, Jerry Leger and The Situation can be found in the front room of The Cameron House at 10pm, revisiting some tunes from Early Riser and performing a few new tracks which are destined to be released on the new record.

Audiences can also expect Leger to include a cover or two throughout the evening to lead up to a new album release. “We thought it would be fun to film some covers by artists that I admire,” says Leger. “Like many, I was deeply saddened by the passing of one of the all time best - Leonard Cohen. He has been a big influence on my writing and the song ‘The Law’ features one of my favourite Cohen lines, ‘My heart is like a blister from doing what I do’. I can relate to that.”

Joining Leger on stage during the residency will be a rotating cast of guests who include Don Stevenson (Moby Grape) and Tim Bovaconti, Ben Somer, Matt Cooke (The Del Fi’s), and Angie Hilts (Rucksack Willies, The Double Cuts), with The Del Fi’s closing the night out every Wednesday at midnight.
