From the moment she emerged, Tei Shi (aka Valerie Teicher) has established herself as the latest in a line of uncompromising female artists. Her hypnotic brand of deconstructed pop has enchanted fans worldwide, while her bold and innovative fashion sense has drawn plaudits from style publications and Instagram followers alike. After breaking onto the scene with 2013's Saudade EP, Tei Shi scored a bona fide hit a year later with "Bassically", which racked up over 12 million streams across streaming platforms and YouTube. Now she's preparing to release Crawl Space, her astounding and emotional debut album, due out March 31 via Arts & Crafts.

"Keep Running" is the first single from the album, and is out now. The sumptuous video, directed by Agostina Gálvez, which premiered today courtesy of Billboard, who called the video a “hypnotic visual expression”, shows off a sultrier side to Tei Shi unseen in her previous visuals.

Director Agostina Gálvez noted, "Val (Tei Shi) and I connected creatively very fast and we were able to integrate our ideas in an interesting way. She wanted to do a karaoke scene and that was the starting point to develop the rest of the story in the video. What I like the most about it is how ordinary elements become strange, generating a special atmosphere throughout the song. Shooting her was great, her slow moves and graceful gestures made her whole performance hypnotic."

Teicher went on to say, "’Keep Running’ was the first new track I wrote shortly after releasing my last EP. It's a kind of call to arms to someone you love, to take on and confront all of life's obstacles together. To fight to stay together through thick and thin. A ride or die kind of love."

Born in Buenos Aires, Teicher spent her childhood in Argentina and Colombia before moving to Vancouver and Montreal, cultivating a strong artistic sensibility from a young age. During her studies at Massachusetts' Berklee College of Music she began to realize her full potential as a performer, and by the time she moved to New York City after graduation, the Tei Shi project was born.

Crawl Space documents Tei Shi's transformation from the cautious and curious new kid on the block to a confident, self-possessed and buzz worthy artist. Written and recorded over a year and a half, the album traces a much wider arc, from Tei Shi's earliest musical explorations to this, her first long player. Growth is never easy, though, and if the title makes the process sound difficult, even claustrophobic, that's because it was. In fact, there is a palpable physicality surrounding this record, and it reveals itself everywhere: from the album's song titles - “Keep Running”, “Lift Me” - to its rhythms, to its astonishing cover art. Constant motion is a fact of life. A real, physical crawlspace fits only one person and demands that person move forward, out and through it. Tei Shi's debut evokes that feeling and the experience of centering oneself, changing focus.

Today, acclaimed singer / songwriter Rose Cousins is sharing the new video for “Chains” which premiered via Billboard Magazine. Written in Nashville together with Andrew Combs and Jeff Bowman, Cousins tells Billboard that the brief for the song was “everything has gone to shit and swampy, so it's really bluesy and dark.”

Captured at Lever’s Lake in Cape Breton by director Nathan Boone, the video for “Chains” was based off a script from Nova Scotia filmmaker Mat Barkley. "[Boone] came up with this great idea of two people tethered to each other somehow, walking through a woods, and he had this beautiful area that he had access to that was attached to his family somehow," Cousins tells Billboard. "It was really exciting to me that these are two local, young filmmakers and they gathered their friends to be in it and to help out and made it really beautiful."

Due out February 3 via Outside Music, The Guardian says of Natural Conclusion, “…her voice draws you in until you realize you are at the heart of the storm,” while The Bluegrass Situation notes, “The album is full of space, exquisitely stitched into each lyric and musical arrangement.” No Depression furthers, “Cousins and Henry have created an emotional landscape full of beauty and conquest. It is formidable.” Cousins is set to take to the road in support of the album, beginning February 8 with a string of dates throughout North America. Full tour dates can be found below.

On Natural Conclusion, Rose Cousins steps boldly forward, a fully mature writer and artist in her next great stride. Cousins took a deliberate break from her active touring schedule and traveled to create – Toronto, Los Angeles, Boston, Nashville, Ireland. Her goal was to connect with artists, writers, and producers to make songs in new ways, new sounds with new people, not knowing where they would go and not needing to. Her catalogue and perspective expanded.

Cousins enlisted Grammy Award winning producer Joe Henry for the recording of Natural Conclusion. “Joe is a poet, a thoughtful, contemplative writer,” says Cousins. “That poetry and thoughtfulness transfers to his approach in production. It’s about the right life for the song and the right musicians to make that happen.” She and Henry each gathered trusted colleagues and met in Toronto. Henry brought longtime collaborators from Los Angeles; Engineer Ryan Freeland, drummer Jay Bellerose, and bassist David Piltch, who collectively worked on many notable projects (Bonnie Raitt, Solomon Burke, Allen Toussaint, Billy Bragg).

Cousins invited Toronto pianist Aaron Davis (Holly Cole, Jane Siberry) and guitar player Gord Tough (Kathleen Edwards, Sarah Harmer); touring mates Asa Brosius (Anais Mitchell, Heavy Blinkers) from Halifax on pedal/lap steel and dobro, and Zachariah Hickman (Josh Ritter, Ray Lamontagne) from Boston on bass; friend and fellow PEIslander violin/violist Kinley Dowling (Hey Rosetta!) added strings and joined the choir that also included Hickman and longtime friends Jill Barber, Caroline Brookes (Good Lovelies), and Miranda Mullholland (Great Lake Swimmers).

“My goal was to be wide open emotionally,” says Cousins. “This band created a space for me to rise as a musician yet let me lead. Ultimately this is a record of performances, the moment, raw, vulnerable and real. I suppose not unlike the subject matter within.” The result is what Cousins calls “the most honest and vulnerable thing” she has made to date.

On April 21, Arts & Crafts will release YOUNG, the debut album from New York-based duo Overcoats. Co-produced by Nicolas Vernhes (The War On Drugs, Dirty Projectors) and Autre Ne Veut, YOUNG is a story about growing up told through the lens of two women who are wise beyond their years. The lead single “Hold Me Close” deals with the complexities of love set to a backdrop of lush electronic beats and garnished with seamlessly intertwining harmonies.

NPR Music also named Overcoats one of its favourite discoveries at SXSW last year, and the duo ranked #3 on NPR’s Listeners Poll of favourite new artists of 2016. One such listener hailed Overcoats for "The chills they give me; the fact that I can't look away when they perform; their complex and irresistible harmonies; the vulnerability to their words and the dance-y beats they put behind them."

Overcoats is comprised of former college roommates Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell, who co-wrote all twelve songs on YOUNG. The two were drawn to each other when they first met as teenagers in 2011, finding connection in a love of diverse musical styles, and forging a closeness that verges on sisterhood. Both members of Overcoats describe the first time hearing each other sing as an epiphany: the harmony of their voices leading to personal, individual discovery.

YOUNG weaves a tapestry of crystalline vocals with soaring synths and rich bass lines. From the subdued introspection of “Kai’s Song” to the thumping two-step and club-ready brass of “Leave The Light On”, YOUNG showcases a striking range for the duo. While their seamless vocal interplay and contemplative lyrics remain at the core of their sound, YOUNG is also rich with experimentation and sonic surprises. This spring, Overcoats will play select dates opening for Tennis before heading out on a headlining tour later this year. Full itinerary below.
