"Impossibly hooky song, which might be the band's best work yet" - Exclaim!

“’Bones’ is anthemic, taking colossal melodies and intertwined guitar leads,
and pushing it all ever upward, aiming their burning chord progressions and harmonies straight toward the sky.”
- Post-Trash

"90s era grunge/alt-rock...similar to something you might have heard
on the indie stations back in the late 90s."
- Austin Town Hall

Hailing from Vancouver, Dead Soft is a four-piece rock band making playful, melody-driven grunge punk anthems. Today, the band are proud to release their New Emotion EP on Arts & Crafts.

New Emotion features five catchy, earnest fuzzed-out punk songs that act as an empowering reminder that you are in control of your life, even when life feels out of control. The EP symbolizes renewal and growth.

On the EP, Dead Soft Bassist/Vocalist Keeley Rochon says, "This EP truly showcases us approaching the recording experience for the first time as a four piece and seeing what opportunities that afforded us sound-wise. “Bones" is us really flexing those new muscles in a big way - duelling guitars, heavy-hitting drums, and a wild crescendoing outro of cascading vocal harmonies that came together in the studio like a miracle."

MORE ON DEAD SOFT

Dead Soft was founded in 2011 by partners Nathaniel Epp (vocalist/songwriter) and Keeley Rochon (bassist/vocalist) as “a fun living room rock project.” At the time Epp and Rochon were living in Victoria, BC, but had been best friends and playing music since they were teenagers in the small coastal fishing town of Prince Rupert.

Epp grew up obsessed with luminaries of the American underground like Elliott Smith, the Ramones, and the Replacements. Artists who write simple, beautiful pop tunes that highlight dread and saccharine in equal parts. Epp and Rochon also developed a “soft spot” for 90s Canadian indie-pop bands like Limblifter, Inbreds, Eric's Trip, and Sloan.

Like most small town or suburban kids who want to play music, the pair eventually moved to the nearest big city: Vancouver. There, Dead Soft joined the inspiring scene that produced pivotal Canadian acts like Mac Demarco, Japandroids, and White Lung.

In Vancouver, Dead Soft became a three-piece and, after a string of singles, released their self-titled debut in 2014 on Kingfisher Bluez and JEFF the Brotherhood’s Infinity Cat Recordings . The band spent the next four years on the road, including support tours with Bully and The Dirty Nil. A sophomore follow up would have come sooner, but the recording process, and life, became mired in difficulties.

The theme of new beginnings align closely with changes in the band. Specifically, the recent additions of Alex Smith (drums) and Kyle Schick (guitarist) have allowed for a bigger sound, more hooky guitar leads, Beach Boys-like harmonies, and more strength and purpose. The new line-up initiated a wellspring of creativity.

That fresh start extended beyond their creative endeavors, facing down the realities of living as an artist in one of North America’s most expensive cities, Epp and Rochon left Vancouver for the familiar environment of a small coastal town, Gabriola Island, where they now run a landscaping company in between writing music and touring. The band are heading on tour with The Dirty Nil this fall. Full dates below.

A few weeks back, Danny Michel began the journey of releasing a new album, one song at a time. Now, at the end of that journey, we have White & Gold. Out today, on all streaming platforms, CD, and 10” vinyl, White & Gold is accompanied by a wonderful wood carved cover created by artist Brian Bosch.

White & Gold leads off with the dreamy, fuzzed out “Purgatory Cove”, which is currently #4 on the CBC Music Top 20. The album also features “Born In The Wild”, a song for the brave kids of the #neveragain and #marchforourlives movement; the 50s ‘Doo-Wop’ inspired “The Red Fox”; ; “Nobody Rules You”, a stripped down back-to-school version of an old song, inspired by the school kids who’ve been covering it over the years; and “Back Where You Started”, a song which reminds us Danny still has some rock in his blood.

Today also marks the release of the sixth and final track from the album, “The Right Thing”, a twangy, laid-back reminder that sometimes we need to ‘forgive and forget’.

Recently, Danny launched Season 5 of Dan’s Space Van, a mobile web-series filmed inside a customized 1978 Chevy Vandura, airbrushed in a Star Trek theme. The Show travels the world, meets interesting people and features musical guests who perform in the Van’s diamond quilted, crushed red velvet interior. So far, Season 5 has seen performances by Joel Plaskett, Skye Wallace, and Bahamas.

“A lovely, pensive collection of regrets, joys and humanisms” (Parade), Donovan’s acclaimed new album, Both Ways, was inspired by the works of authors and theorists like Alice Munro and Bronwen Wallace. Donovan, who has amassed over 75 million streams on Spotify alone, is lauded for his sharp and universal songwriting, which has been described as “a very simple beauty” (Entertainment Weekly) and that packs “an emotional wallop” (Billboard). Having cut his teeth penning songs for Tim McGraw, Billy Currington, Charles Kelley, and more, Donovan is a widely respected songwriter in Nashville for his distinct voice and nuanced lyricism.

MORE PRAISE FOR BOTH WAYS

“A knack for taking huge, universal feelings and distilling them into simple, poignant moments.” –Noisey

“Modern-folk melodics that pair well with his gravelly vocals and flair for vivid, real-life imagery"
- Relix

Everyone has their favorites, but this guy should be everyone's favorite right now because he sounds like Donovan Woods and not like everyone else and writes to beat the devil.”
