Following a widely acclaimed Liberty, Lindi Ortega returns with an entirely instrumental version of the 12-track “cinematic journey" (NPR Weekend Edition) on January 25 titled Liberty: Piano Songbook.

“I didn’t feel like I was quite done with Liberty,” Ortega says. “I didn’t want to write a full sequel, but it needed something else. This seemed like a logical next step to take.”

In March 2018, Ortega released Liberty, a record that draws on the epic work of Oscar-winning composer Ennio Morricone, who became one of Ortega’s musical obsessions during the writing and recording of Liberty. She enlisted Nashville producer Skylar Wilson (Joshua Hedley, Justin Townes Earle, Rayland Baxter) when she discovered their shared passion for Quentin Tarantino movies.

Following the release, Ortega and Wilson developed the concept for the Liberty: Piano Songbook with multi-instrumentalist Robbie Crowell (Kesha, Midland, Deer Tick), who had previously played with Ortega, recording the solo arrangements at Creative Workshops in Nashville. The fresh versions of these songs transform them, moving away from the spaghetti-Western production while maintaining a cinematic tone that musically complements the lyrical themes of Liberty.

“I created Liberty for people going through a struggle,” says Ortega, who wrote the songs out of her own vulnerabilities, including self-image issues. “I wanted to extend that with the Liberty: Piano Songbook, and I hope it adds an extra soothing element.”

While Ortega does play piano, having another musician record Liberty: Piano Songbook allowed her the critical distance to enjoy her songs as a listener, free of the self-critical ear artists typically bring to their own work.

“I find myself appreciating the melodies,” she says. “I can pay attention to them when I’m not having to pay attention to what my voice is like or how I’m singing.”

Ortega staged a North American and European headlining tour in 2018, and also toured with Jason Isbell and Asleep at the Wheel. In August, she released Liberty: Parkhill Sessions, recorded at the Parkhill Studios in Calgary, Alberta. The EP featured stripped-down versions of three Liberty songs — “The Comeback Kid”, “Forever Blue”, and “Lovers in Love”, recast as a duet with Corb Lund.

In February, Ortega will hit the road in Canada with Terra Lightfoot, Begonia, and a wide range of special guests for The Longest Road Tour. Full tour dates can be found below. For tickets and more information, visit lindiortega.com/tour

“You free yourself when you take away the script,” says Toronto songwriter Charlotte Cornfield. “That’s where this record came from, dismantling patterns and embracing the process.” Cornfield’s third full length, The Shape Of Your Name, is set to arrive April 5 via Outside Music’s new imprint Next Door Records.

“I’ve long been an admirer of Charlotte’s music and knew she had this record in her,” says Outside Music Managing Director Evan Newman. “It’s an absolute honour to have The Shape of Your Name be the first release on Next Door Records. We’re really looking forward to building a roster of diverse and compelling artists to share with the world. With the industry evolving and thriving, it became a focus for us to expand our label and thus adding a new imprint is a very exciting opportunity.”

Today, Charlotte shares the first single from the new LP “Andrew” which received its national radio premiere this past weekend via The Strombo Show and will be available everywhere on January 18. Cornfield says “Andrew” could be “a song to a friend or a romantic partner but at its core it’s note to self, a reminder to step back and look at the bigger picture instead of dwelling on the minutia. We all have friends who we want to shake sometimes because their priorities feel out of whack, but on the flip side of that sometimes we’re that friend who needs shaking. When things get messy and absurd it helps be able to laugh at yourself, to laugh with someone, to shake it off and move forward.”

Directed by Adrienne McLaren with Thom Varey as Director of Photography, the video for “Andrew” features one of Cornfield’s closest friends, Sam Rosenberg. “I wanted to explore the nuances of our friendship and take this song out of myself,” says Cornfield. “Sam has exposed me to so much great music and art over the years – I’ve always loved going to concerts with them and watching them dance. I wanted us to sing to one another in familiar places (my house, their childhood home, onstage), let things get sentimental, let things be funny, let it all breathe. Oh, and there’s a little Brendan Canning cameo. Sam and Brendan are probably the two most knowledgeable people in the universe when it comes to late 20th century popular music, so it’s nice that they’re both part of this thing.”

The Shape Of Your Name has a more honed studio sound than her scrappier 2016 release Future Snowbird, and for good reason: it was recorded in 5 different sessions over the course of 3 years. The songs are her strongest and most striking to date - contemplative and contemporary, funny and heart-wrenching - and they’ve got that stuck-in-your-head-for-days quality that Cornfield is known for. The Shape Of Your Name features a star-studded cast of collaborators including (but not limited to) Grammy-winning engineer Shawn Everett, Broken Social Scene members Brendan Canning, Kevin Drew, and Charles Spearin, and Montreal songwriter Leif Vollebekk.

“My initial intention wasn’t to make a record at all,” Charlotte muses. “The whole thing kind of happened by accident. I went to The Banff Centre to do a residency and came out with these recordings that I knew I wanted to use for something but wasn’t sure what.” She brought the unfinished songs to her former roommate Nigel Ward in Montreal. “He fell into the producer role seamlessly. We took it slow and just tried things for a while until the vision settled in. There was no rush. It was freeing, and it gave the songs a lot of breathing room to develop.”

For the past four years Cornfield has been booking and managing Burdock Music Hall, a small venue in the west end of Toronto. The job has offered her stability and a strong sense of place in Toronto’s bursting-at-the-gills music community. She’s also an in-demand drummer and side musician, and has worked closely with Tim Darcy of Ought, Molly Burch, Adrian Underhill, and members of Lake Street Dive. She has toured extensively in North America and Europe and has supported a huge range of artists including Broken Social Scene, Anais Mitchell, Daniel Romano, and Sam Amidon.

"I've been having some pretty dark thoughts. I like them a lot." - “Scorpion Hill”

Toronto, Ontario’s very own punk powerhouse – PUP – are proud to announce their new album, Morbid Stuff, set for release on the band’s brand new label Little Dipper, in partnership with Universal Music Canada on April 5, 2019. Produced, recorded and mixed by Dave Schiffman (Weezer, Cass McCombs, The Mars Volta), Morbid Stuff is everything that PUP fans have grown to love about them, but dialed up to 11. It’s gang’s-all-here vocals, guitarmonies, and lyrics about death. Lots of them.

The album’s visceral, wildfire first single, “Kids”, is available to stream today. “‘Kids’ is a love song from one nihilistic depressive to another,” explains Stefan Babcock. “It's about what happens when you stumble across the only other person on the face of this godless, desolate planet that thinks everything is as twisted and as fucked up as you do.  And thanks to them, the world starts to seem just a little less bleak. But only slightly - it's still pretty fucked up to be honest.”

Pre-order "Morbid Stuff" out on April 5th: https://RiseRecords.lnk.to/MorbidStuff Just like the kids, I've been navigating my way through the mind numbing reality of a godless existence, which at this point in my hollow and vapid life, has erased what little ambition I've got left. And I've embraced the calamity with a detachment and impassive disinterest.

Formed in Toronto five years ago, PUP -- comprised of Babcock, Nestor Chumak, Zack Mykula, and Steve Sladowski -- quickly became favorites of the punk scene with their first two, critically-beloved albums, winning accolades everywhere from the New York Times to Pitchfork, from NPR and Rolling Stone, and more. Their last album, The Dream Is Over, not only debuted at #1 on the Billboard “Heatseekers” chart, but also catapulted them into international waters, selling out shows across the world throughout 2016.

With Morbid Stuff, PUP grew up, then doubled down on everything that made you love their first two albums.  Fitting to their ethos, their new album takes the dichotomy of fun and emotional wreckage in their songs and blows it up, projection-style, onto the biggest wall possible, teetering between gleeful chaos and bleak oblivion while wielding some of the best choruses the band has ever written. It’s also a pretty intense foray into singer Stefan Babcock’s fight with depression, an album dressed up with heartbreak, broken dreams, self-loathing, and castigating yourself for thinking you matter enough to even bother hating yourself. And in perfect PUP fashion, taking responsibility of his own depression lead him to….laughter. Admitting his depression allowed him to laugh in its face, and the result is that marriage of darkness and joy that made PUP who they are, but in a brand new way.

Indeed, despite its dark subject matter, at times Morbid Stuff is funny as hell, even in the music.  Often times a heavy barrage of hardcore is coupled with a light, folky guitar that lives quietly in the background. Rollicking choruses disappear into nothing but a hopeful group chant, echoing through until the end of the song. PUP’s rage isn’t pure rage anymore; it’s rage being taunted by the reality that the rage is its own fault.

It's all the fury and celebration you've come to know, but rooted in understanding of where that fury comes from. It’s the most insightful, sweetest, funniest, sickest, angriest, saddest and most inescapably desperate collection of songs they’ve recorded to date.  If their self-titled record was the fuse and The Dream Is Over was the bomb going off, Morbid Stuff is your family sifting through the rubble, only to find you giggling while you bleed to death.
