Today, Saskatoon’s Close Talker are sharing their first new single since the release of Lens  (2017). “Half Past Nine” marks a new chapter for the band. The three members, Will Quiring, Matthew Kopperud, and Chris Morien, leaned into the trust and foundation built over many years of friendship to pursue a song that would be sustainable. At its core, the song is laced with a quiet confidence that invites the listener dig in, finding new appreciation with each spin. It’s a song the band wrote for themselves, about a night they will never forget, in hopes that the song would carry the same meaning in ten years, as it does today.

On the single, the band notes : "’Half Past Nine’ is about a moment we all shared at a local music festival, surrounded by friends, all watching our pal, on stage singing his heart out. It's rare to recognize true significance without the help of hindsight, but this particular moment was special and we all knew it right then and there. In short, this song is about trying to hang on to those times, or simply enjoy them while they last, knowing that they’re fleeting. Be thankful for one another, enjoy one another, life is short."

Close Talker, now more than ever, is interested in music that is timeless – music that won’t force the listener into feeling a certain way. To achieve this, the band approached “Half Past Nine” following a code of instincts and honesty, including a list of 10 commandments by which each decision was filtered through. The song paves the way for more new music in the near future and is a testament to the band’s integrity and desire to produce music that is original and pure.

Beyond Close Talker’s recordings and videos, the music comes to life with the band’s iconic live show, leaving audiences around the world satisfied, having left all inhibitions behind. Next month the band take to the road with performances at New York’s New Colossus Festival before heading to Austin’s SXSW. Full tour dates can be found below.

EARLY PRAISE FOR MORBID STUFF

"With singalong ready – yet downright nihilistic – refrains and a pristine punk sound, PUP’s 'Kids' has the makings of an apocalyptic anthem." - NPR Music (Night Shift)

"[‘Kids’] is a fitting follow-up to The Dream Is Over, their excellent 2016 album which we named one of the best albums of that year. It’s all heavy riffs and nervous energy and an exclamation mark of a chorus" - Stereogum

“a reluctant, thrashing love song.” - The FADER

"It's raucous and death-obsessed and silly all at once, packed with chant-along vocals and spindly riffs. " - Noisey

“Charging gleefully towards insanity…’Kids’ embraces the misery by wrapping it in melodic, driven punk chords and thunderous gang-vocals.” - Consequence of Sound

Toronto, Ontario’s very own punk powerhouse – PUP – will release their excellent new record Morbid Stuff on April 5 via Little Dipper / Universal Music Canada, and today the band shares the album’s second single entitled “Free At Last”. PUP shared the song’s lyrics and chords with fans a few weeks ago, asking them to do their best cover without ever even hearing the track. While the band expected a handful of covers to be made, they wound up with 253 submissions and a damn good $25 music video, shot entirely on an iPhone in one night to boot. Listen to the song and check out the instructional music video featuring PUP fans, including the likes of Charly Bliss’ Eva Hendricks, who sings on the original track, as well as Stranger Things and Calpurnia’s Finn Wolfhard.

Stefan Babcock on the song and video:

“The video for ‘Free At Last’ started off as a very, very stupid concept. Before the song was released, we put out the lyrics and a basic chord chart and asked people to record their own versions without hearing the original first. It was a bit of a social experiment. We expected to receive 15 or 20 covers. We received 253. A lot of them were very… interesting…but most of them were actually really good. We listened to every single one front to back (13 hours and 34 minutes), and by the end our brains were puddles of sludge and we couldn’t remember how our own version sounded.

We received hip hop versions, ska versions, grindcore, EDM, Mariachi, Ukulele, Polka, and piano ballad versions. Incredibly enough, none of the 253 covers sounded like ours. And even more astounding, no two of the covers sounded the same either. The amount of creativity and love put into these things absolutely blew us away.”

Directed & Produced by PUP and Jeremy and also Amanda Edited by Jeremy and also Nestor Thanks to the 253 maniacs who submitted covers of this dumb song!

This Spring, PUP will embark on a North America, UK and Europe tour in support of Morbid Stuff. New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Portland, Toronto, Brussels, and Cologne have all sold out, as well as all U.K. and all Canadian dates. The band also just announced a hometown show in Toronto at Echo Beach on July 21st, with support from Twin Peaks and Charly Bliss. See below to find a show near you, and grab your tickets HERE as these are selling fast.

Formed in Toronto five years ago, PUP – comprised of Stefan Babcock, Nestor Chumak, Zack Mykula, and Steve Sladowski – quickly became favorites of the punk scene with their first two, critically-beloved albums, winning accolades everywhere from the New York Times to Pitchfork, from NPR and Rolling Stone, and more. Now, with Morbid Stuff, PUP have grown up and doubled down on everything that made you love their first two records. It’s gang’s-all-here vocals, guitarmonies, and lyrics about death. Lots of them.

Fitting to their ethos, their new album takes the dichotomy of fun and emotional wreckage in their songs and teeters between gleeful chaos and bleak oblivion while wielding some of the best choruses the band has ever written. Morbid Stuff is also a pretty intense foray into singer Stefan Babcock’s fight with depression, and shows, in perfect PUP fashion, how taking responsibility of his own depression lead him to….laughter. Admitting his depression allowed Babcock to laugh in its face, and the result is that marriage of darkness and joy that made PUP who they are, but in a brand new way.

Indeed, despite its dark subject matter, at times Morbid Stuff is funny as hell, even in the music. It’s the most insightful, sweetest, funniest, sickest, angriest, saddest and most inescapably desperate collection of songs they’ve recorded to date. If their self-titled record was the fuse and The Dream Is Over was the bomb going off, Morbid Stuff is your family sifting through the rubble, only to find you giggling while you bleed to death.

In November of 2018 the Canadian singer songwriter Andy Shauf and his childhood friends Dallas Bryson (guitar/vocals) and brothers Darryl Kissick (bass) and Avery Kissick (drums & percussion) released Foxwarren, their self-titled debut album that was a decade in the making. Today they are thrilled to announce their first-ever tour beginning in their hometown of Regina on May 29. Full tour dates throughout the US and Canada will follow and all performances are listed below. To mark the occasion they have also released their new video for the album track “Sunset Canyon”. Directed by Laura-Lynn Petrick and featuring actor and talk show host Busy Philipps.

“‘Sunset Canyon’ is one of my favorite songs from the Foxwarren album and I basically have been making my own music videos to the song since it came out,” said Philipps. “Working with [Director] Laura-Lynn on the video was so amazing. She is such a talent and I loved the easy going vibe of the day, wandering through the canyon with her in my mom’s dress from the sixties.”

Petrick also added, “The video was my ethereal gaze on a female seeking serenity in the nature that surrounds her. Inspired by Italian neorealism, Busy and I spent the day exploring the forests of the canyons and enjoying the winter sun reflecting with nature.”

Subtle and thoughtful, Foxwarren draws parallels to Andy Shauf’s solo work while leaning on collaboration and looseness rather than Shauf’s meticulous arrangements. Where Shauf leaves space for orchestration, Foxwarren take time to ruminate on passages and themes. Propped up by warm driving rhythms and a familiar voice, and coloured with soft electronics and coarse guitars, this record ultimately hinges on sincerity. It captures the feeling of friends pushing each other, of a band looking inward for inspiration instead of outward for influence.
