Black Mountain shares the second single from their forthcoming album, Destroyer, to be released on May 24 via Dine Alone. The serpentine “Boogie Lover” coils down the Strip. You pull into The Rainbow Bar & Grill to take the edge off. Doesn’t matter what year it is.

The band’s Stephen McBean waxes poetic on “Boogie Lover”: "Slaying hearts with riffs in search of Geezer wood. This one went into the oven twice as it needed an extra topping. Space doom for lovers. Kliph Scurlock [Flaming Lips] pulled some Kiss outta his cape and Randy Holden came knocking on the front door holding a bridge! Rachel Fannan [Sleepy Sun] baked a cake while Jeremy Schmidt and Tom G. Warrior spaced out on some classic Isaac Hayes. Slow burn in a creaky world."

PRAISE FOR OH SUSANNA & JOHNSTOWN

“Oh Susanna’s passionate vocals and evocative, backward-glancing songs make her one of new music’s brightest lights.” - Maclean’s

“Brilliant debut album” - UNCUT Magazine (UK)

“Ungerleider is a natural story-teller with a bewitching voice.” - The Times (UK)

“Johnstown was an album that came through the post, and I immediately loved it. Her voice has a heart-tugging emotive quality.” - Bob Harris in Billboard Magazine

“Oh Susanna demonstrates her deep understanding of traditional folk music conventions by creating a memorable cast of characters badly bruised and battered as they travel down a lonesome highway.” - Country Music People Magazine (UK)

“’Johnstown’ is quite frankly, like no other released in 2000. Produced by Peter Moore who worked with The Cowboy Junkies on their ‘The Trinity Sessions’ album, the echoes of old Appalachian ballads and songs dealing with personal loss and helplessness was, although dark and bleak, never less than fascinating.” - Pennyblack Music (UK)

Oh Susanna (Suzie Ungerleider) celebrates the 20th anniversary of her critically acclaimed, debut full-length album  Johnstown  with a re-mastered vinyl release on Record Store Day, April 13. Originally released in 1999, Johnstown is considered a contemporary folk-noir masterpiece brimming with ghostly songs of melancholic beauty and menace. Oh Susanna’s voice evokes a cinematic narration to simultaneously warm the heart and chill the blood.

Johnstown was produced and recorded by Grammy Award winner Peter J. Moore (Cowboy Junkies, The Band, The Clash) at his studio on Beaconsfield Street in Toronto. The vinyl re-issue of Johnstown is remastered by Moore from the original recorded tracks and includes a limited-edition poster of Johnstown’s illustrated lyrics by the comic artist Hank Pine.  Also included is a digital download of A Shot of Oh Susanna, a five-song cassette recorded in 1998 which was previously only available at live shows. These acoustic versions of songs later received full production on Johnstown.

This first pressing of Johnstown will be limited to 500 hand-numbered copies and will only be available through independent retailers for Record Store Day. The digitally remastered album will be available to stream on all platforms on June 14.

Vancouver grunge-punks Dead Soft are currently touring North America and dropping new singles along the way. Today, Dead Soft share their latest track "The Static", a dream-pop love song in the style of Beach House or Galaxie 500 led by the airy vocals of bassist/vocalist Keeley Rochon, and the spacey, psychedelic guitar work of Nathaniel Epp and Kyle Schick.

On “The Static”, Rochon says: "The song represents the feeling of being alone and afraid, having a partner to rely on but becoming aware of the fact that there's more to life than blacking out for the entirety of your work day only to get home and collapse in the arms of the one you love. It's also a love song."

I was struggling with deep-seated mental illness and would take the number 9 bus to work every morning filled with all-consuming dread and panic for no reason that was apparent to me at the time.

Earlier along the tour, the band released emo-grunge single "Porch" and will continue to share new material throughout the year. The band also recently stopped by Audiotree to record a session featuring tracks from New Emotion.

Dead Soft released their New Emotion EP on Arts & Crafts late last year and hit the road for a lengthy, successful tour with Canadian punks The Dirty Nil. New Emotion features five catchy, earnest pop punk songs that act as an empowering reminder that you are in control of your life, even when life feels out of control. The EP symbolizes renewal and growth.

Rochon explains: "This EP truly showcases us approaching the recording experience for the first time as a four piece and seeing what opportunities that afforded us sound-wise. “Bones" is us really flexing those new muscles in a big way - duelling guitars, heavy-hitting drums, and a wild crescendoing outro of cascading vocal harmonies that came together in the studio like a miracle."

MORE ON DEAD SOFT

Dead Soft was founded in 2011 by partners Nathaniel Epp (vocalist/songwriter) and Keeley Rochon (bassist/vocalist) as “a fun living room rock project.” At the time Epp and Rochon were living in Victoria, BC, but had been best friends and playing music since they were teenagers in the small coastal fishing town of Prince Rupert.

Epp grew up obsessed with luminaries of the American underground like Elliott Smith, the Ramones, and the Replacements. Artists who write simple, beautiful pop tunes that highlight dread and saccharine in equal parts. Epp and Rochon also developed a “soft spot” for 90s Canadian indie-pop bands like Limblifter, Inbreds, Eric's Trip, and Sloan.

Like most small town or suburban kids who want to play music, the pair eventually moved to the nearest big city: Vancouver. There, Dead Soft joined the inspiring scene that produced pivotal Canadian acts like Mac Demarco, Japandroids, and White Lung.

In Vancouver, Dead Soft became a three-piece and, after a string of singles, released their self-titled debut in 2014 on Kingfisher Bluez and JEFF the Brotherhood’s Infinity Cat Recordings. The band spent the next four years on the road, including support tours with Bully and The Dirty Nil. A sophomore follow up would have come sooner, but the recording process, and life, became mired in difficulties.

The theme of new beginnings align closely with changes in the band. Specifically, the recent additions of Alex Smith (drums) and Kyle Schick (guitarist) have allowed for a bigger sound, more hooky guitar leads, Beach Boys-like harmonies, and more strength and purpose. The new line-up initiated a wellspring of creativity.

That fresh start extended beyond their creative endeavors, facing down the realities of living as an artist in one of North America’s most expensive cities, Epp and Rochon left Vancouver for the familiar environment of a small coastal town, Gabriola Island, where they now run a landscaping company in between writing music and touring.
