This Fall, Ben Rogers will bring his latest record Wildfire to arenas across Canada and soft seat theatres in the US as he sets out on the road to support City and Colour and Jacob Banks.  “I'm beyond excited and honoured to be touring with these artists, to play new places, and to spread 'Wildfire' near and far. See you on the road!” Tour dates begin October 10. Full dates can be found below.

Today, Rogers is sharing the powerful new video for “A Changed Man” from Wildfire. “I knew by creating a cinematic retelling of this story I was running the risk of cheapening the narrative but as soon as I started talking ideas over with director Stefan Berrill I knew I was in good hands and that it was going to work,” says Rogers. “I initially wanted it to be a one-shot music video but thankfully Stefan talked me out of it and had better ideas. Working with him and his crew was a continuation of the synergistic experience making the record. It just clicked. We shot it over three days in a few different locations. When I showed up to the studio for the first day of the shoot the scale of it hit me. It was crazy to see upwards of 20-30 cast and crew members working tirelessly. So in that way it’s not so much a music video as it is a short film.” Rogers continues, “I think the toughest part was finding the right actress to play the lead. My wife suggested Eva Bourne and I was blown away by how she brought the character to life and instilled the character with a power and vulnerability that can only be accomplished by a great actress.”

Produced by Dallas Green (City and Colour, Alexisonfire, You+Me) and released on his newly minted Still Records, Rogers’ Wildfire, was marked as one of Exclaim!’s Most Anticipated Albums Of 2019 and one of Amazon Music Canada's Artists To Watch in 2019.  Wildfire is available to purchase and stream everywhere and can be found on a limited edition (400 copies) double 12” black vinyl with gatefold and printed insert here.

MORE ON WILDFIRE
Wildfire sees Rogers drifting away from it the sounds of his first two acclaimed solo albums, 2015’s The Bloodred Yonder and 2013’s Lost Stories: Volume One. The sound – still rooted in folk and Americana, though now with an earnest new attitude permeates throughout – is a raw, hazy, rock-inspired swagger that channels the likes of possessed masterminds from Nick Cave to Otis Redding to Marc Bolan of T.Rex. Put simply, it is enveloping, and the authenticity is palpable.

Wildfire was penned by Rogers and brought to life under the guidance of a new collaborator - Dallas Green, sitting in the producer’s chair for his first time. Ironically, their partnership was born during a period that each was overcoming a creative impasse.

Green explains what initially drew him to the project: “I recognized something really special about this collection of songs – this vulnerability from Ben was really moving to me. I think it was a brilliant experience for all of us and resulted in a really beautiful record. Not only do I believe in it and think it’s fantastic, but it also did something for me; it really opened a whole new chapter of my creative life.”

Rogers echoes the sentiment. “I can tell Dallas cares about this project as much as I do. He is just so devoted to the process. He really challenged us, but with a generosity of spirit that you just don’t encounter that often. It was the best experience I’ve ever had on a creative level.”

Rounding out the recording experience were co-producer Karl Bareham (City and Colour, Alexisonfire), mixer Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, City and Colour, Tom Waits), and Rogers’ long time band: Matt Kelly (City and Colour) on pedal steel and keys, Erik Nielsen (Dralms, Rich Hope) on bass, John Sponarski (Aaron Pritchett) on lead guitar, and Leon Power (Frazey Ford) at the kit.

SIGNED LPs OF JOHNSTOWN AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE HERE

UK TOUR BEGINS SEPTEMBER 4

“Oh Susanna’s Johnstown certainly didn’t need two decades to mature. For a debut album, it sounds as mature as many albums released by similar artists who had already been creating music for 20 years when it was released....Johnstown sounds fresh, even today. That’s a rare feat for a debut album.” - Roots Music

Last week, Oh Susanna (Suzie Ungerleider) treated the audience at the Longboat Hall in Toronto by revisiting her contemporary folk-noir masterpiece, Johnstown. On the performance, FYI Music News noted "20 years on, these dark country/folk songs are as potent as ever, as is Suzie Ungerleider's pure voice."

This week, Oh Susanna’s celebrates the 20th Anniversary of her critically acclaimed, debut full-length album by releasing the digitally remastered version on streaming platforms everywhere this Friday, June 14.

Johnstown is brimming with ghostly songs of melancholic beauty and menace. Oh Susanna’s voice evokes a cinematic narration to simultaneously warm the heart and chill the blood.

The album was remastered and released on vinyl for Record Store Day and is limited to 500 hand numbered copies. Signed copies of the LP are now available to purchase through Merch Market.

Johnstown was produced and recorded by Grammy Award winner Peter J. Moore (Cowboy Junkies, The Band, The Clash) at his studio on Beaconsfield Street in Toronto. The vinyl re-issue of Johnstown is remastered by Moore from the original recorded tracks and includes a limited-edition poster of Johnstown’s illustrated lyrics by the comic artist Hank Pine.  Also included is a digital download of A Shot of Oh Susanna, a five-song cassette recorded in 1998 which was previously only available at live shows. These acoustic versions of songs later received full production on Johnstown.

PRAISE FOR OH SUSANNA & JOHNSTOWN

“Oh Susanna’s passionate vocals and evocative, backward-glancing songs make her one of new music’s brightest lights.” - Maclean’s

“Brilliant debut album.” - UNCUT Magazine (UK)

“Ungerleider is a natural story-teller with a bewitching voice.” - The Times (UK)

“Johnstown was an album that came through the post, and I immediately loved it. Her voice has a heart-tugging emotive quality.” - Bob Harris in Billboard Magazine

“Oh Susanna demonstrates her deep understanding of traditional folk music conventions by creating a memorable cast of characters badly bruised and battered as they travel down a lonesome highway.” - Country Music People Magazine (UK)

“’Johnstown’ is quite frankly, like no other released in 2000. Produced by Peter Moore who worked with The Cowboy Junkies on their ‘The Trinity Sessions’ album, the echoes of old Appalachian ballads and songs dealing with personal loss and helplessness was, although dark and bleak, never less than fascinating.” - Pennyblack Music (UK)

IN YOUR HEAD EP OUT AUGUST 2 VIA NETTWERK

Recently signed to Nettwerk Records, The Franklin Electric are sharing the new video for “Made It Up In Your Head”, the lead single from their In Your Head EP, due out August 2. On the video, frontman Jon Matte tells Exclaim!, "Life sometimes feels surreal and dream-like and there's no better place to represent that than the desert and the hazy Los Angeles. We all know how it feels to be stuck in a spiral of ideas we've made up in our heads. For me, being able to explore and discover things is a way to get out of my head. It’s something I try to do as much as possible, even on tour."

The Montreal based, JUNO Award nominated collective, founded and fronted by Matte, transforms experiences into anthems. Since emerging in 2014 with their debut album This Is How I Let You Down, The Franklin Electric have logged nearly 400 shows, canvassing the world alongside everyone from Mumford & Sons and Ben Howard to Edward Sharpe and City and Colour. Along the way, 2017’s Blue Ceilings marked a major milestone. Not only did the record produce favorites such as “I Know The Feeling” and “Someone Just Like You”, but it also led to a nomination at the 2018 JUNO awards in the category of Breakthrough Group of the Year. The latter experience set the stage for the forthcoming EP In Your Head. “The theme of the EP is the balance between vulnerability and holding on,” says Jon Matte. “You can’t be so open-minded you never stand up for anything. This theme sets the stage for a beautiful realization to happen. I just make honest music for everyday ordinary people. This is what I’m feeling and going through. This is how I explore universal truths we all go through. I always want the art to reflect what’s going on with me.”

Stay tuned for more updates The Franklin Electric in the coming weeks.
