TOUR DATES BEGIN SEPTEMBER 27

SELF-TITLED LP DUE OUT SEPTEMBER 13 ON COAX RECORDS

“The soft beginning of lead single "Sundays" leaves ample space for Gentle's powerhouse voice...The rich country tone to "Sundays" might put "country music superstar" back in those cards, but whatever the space they create for themselves, Gentle's debut album is evidently just the beginning.” - CBC Music

“Some artists live up to their names...Evangeline Gentle would seem to be one of them,
based on the soothingly beautiful roots-pop and earthy,
Stevie Nicks-style vocals of Sundays” - Tinnitist

Today, Evangeline Gentle shares their bold new single “Drop My Name” from the self-titled debut album, out on Coax Records on September 13. The track “is about knowing what you’re worth, when you’re being taken advantage of, and when to walk away,” says Gentle.

Produced by Jim Bryson and mastered by Grammy Nominated Philip Shaw Bova, Gentle’s debut LP is rich, sweet, and lush with vibrato – only a few of the unmistakable qualities that constitute Gentle’s fervent timbre. Their songwriting possesses an authenticity and depth as rare and unique as their own journey. Born on the Northeast coast of Scotland, Gentle’s family lineage tells all. A descendent of the Codona Circus family, they have live performance in their blood and were given an unequivocal name for the stage too. Gentle has already been awarded Emerging Artist at the 2015 Peterborough Folk Fest and Best Female Vocalist of the year at the 2015 Wire Awards.

Gentle began writing their debut LP over the course of three years, collaborating with Bryson and slowly working on demos together. “During the writing years I trudged my way through deep periods of self-doubt, often wondering if I should quit music entirely,” says Gentle. “I’ve been in love with music my whole life. As a child I thought becoming a female country music superstar- long blonde curls and all was my inevitable fate. Somewhere along the way I internalized a lot of messaging about my queerness as being something that would hold me back, something that made me inherently less gifted and valuable as an artist, that I wasn’t enough for the industry and my spirit got broken. Each song on this record is a landmark on the journey toward re-establishing this spirit. I dream like a child again and though I have long since reconciled with my 11 year old self that becoming a country music superstar is not in the cards for me.”

Recorded at Bryson’s Fixed Hinge studio together with percussionists Pascal Delaquis and Matthew Greco, and vocalist Carleigh Aikins, the process for the LP began with tracks “So It Goes”, a nostalgic story telling of Gentle’s last teenage years, and “Even If”, documenting an unhealthy relationship and later distressing break up with their local dive bar.

Album opener “Drop My Name” was born out of working at a corporate fast food chain on top of another day job to try and earn enough money to make this album. “The Strongest People Have Tender Hearts” reflects on the time the #MeToo movement was taking off. “I mustered up every drop of compassion I could find and wrote that song to honour the ridiculous amount of strength it takes to stay soft in a world that can harden you with a single headline,” says Gentle. The album’s second track, “Ordinary People”, continues on that theme and was written for the “person/people in my life that keep me going when getting up in the morning is hard because I’ve spent too long reading news articles on my facebook feed,” says Gentle.

Lead single “Sundays” and album track “Neither Of Us” are love songs written around a common theme of being gentle with someone’s insecurities and affirming that they are more than enough. “Long Time Love” is a love song too, but about the magic moment where you just know the person who has stepped into your life is going to stick around.

The LP rounds out with the self-sabotaging “Digging My Grave” and “Good And Guided”, a song based on the “idea that we’re all trying our best to be good people with the information and experiences we have in the moment,” says Gentle. “That’s an idealistic view of the world, but it’s a spiritual one that I cling to to get through the day and stay open to connecting with life around me.”

Following the global success of Jean-Michel Blais’ sophomore classical-electronic crossover album, Dans ma main, and accompanying stripped-down EP, eviction sessions, Blais has announced Dans ma main (remixes): a collection of his enchanting compositions reimagined by four of Montreal’s most innovative electronic producers: Grammy Award-nominated electronic producer CFCF, legendary turntablist Kid Koala, dance music upstart CRi, and electro-pop artist FOXTROTT.

“While writing Dans ma main, I remember tracing a line between modern classical and electronic music, wishing to leave those loose ends to remixers... and here we are!” explains Blais. “I asked four Montrealers, friends of mine, to come with their own vision of their favourite song, giving birth to CRi’s uplifting, major, dance-y version of 'blind', FOXTROTT’s groovy, complex, subtle take of 'dans ma main', CFCF's mystic, surreal, intricated rework of 'roses', or Kid Koala’s textured, processed, meditative perception of the same song. How humbling it is asking other artists to take control over one’s creation - I hope you’ll enjoy it, too.”

Dans ma main was recently awarded Best Classical Album at the American Association of Independent Music’s Libera Awards, this followed the album’s shortlist designation at the 2018 Polaris Music Prize where Blais performed the title track

Blais recently expanded his repertoire into film providing the score for Matthias & Maxime, the latest film from acclaimed Québécois director Xavier Dolan. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where Blais received a special mention during Cannes Soundtrack Award ceremony, earning him a golden record award.

Dans ma main (remixes) will be available on all digital retailers on August 23rd.

LITTLE SCREAM HITS A GROOVE ON LATEST SINGLE FROM SPEED QUEEN, “STILL LIFE”

Speed Queen is the title of Little Scream’s new album, set to arrive on October 25. It’s a record that Little Scream (a.k.a. Laurel Sprengelmeyer) says is about observing the slow entropy of the US, ruminating on her own low-income upbringing in a flyover state, and, as she says, “taking it all in from the privileged position of being a new Canadian.”

Today, Little Scream shares a slice of escapism from the record, the gently grooving “Still Life”, which paints a picture of “complicated chaos” and “a sophisticated daydream.”

Little Scream on the song and finding personal catharsis:

“Much of my new record Speed Queen touches on class, poverty, and politics. But there are a few exceptions, and all of these exceptions have one thing in common—they all reference painting. I guess painting is my “happy place,” and the thing that gave me a break from the other heavy subject matter. ‘Still Life’ is a song that grew out of a fragment Mike Feuerstack had started and shared with me. I had just been discussing that Manet painting Un bar aux Folies Bergère, and I finished writing the song with the unrequited longing that painting has always inspired in me.

“Still Life” follows Speed Queen’s first single “Dear Leader” and its powerful, star-studded lyric video featuring cameos from The National, Arcade Fire, Superchunk, Holly Miranda, Leif Vollebekk, Mélissa Laveaux, and more. Speed Queen is available to pre-order today from Dine Alone Records on CD and Vinyl.

MORE ABOUT SPEED QUEEN

On her third album, Little Scream offers us a reflection on class and poverty in America. Speed Queen began as bits of prose written while touring her last album across North America. The title, which alludes to the opiate crisis, actually refers to a washing machine. Little Scream says, “When you’re struggling, nothing says you’ve made it more than getting your own washing machine. Speed Queen is about the dream of making it, and feeling desperately close but missing it.”

The album is gently accusatory. She doesn’t let herself or any of her listeners off the hook. In “Privileged Child”, she reminds wealthy people who like to adopt the style of the poor and working class that “poverty’s a feeling money just can’t buy.” On “Dear Leader,” she reminds those opposing migration that “when the waters rise, it’s gonna be you, Miami,” warning them that when they’re needing help, “…you will ask your God, but he’ll be busy getting risen, and the rich will be too busy buying stock in private prisons—that’s where they’ll send you for talking about socialism.” The biting commentary served with a sense of humor softens its presentation but doesn’t detract from its power. This is a theme throughout Speed Queen, where humor and warm heartedness prevail despite some of the darker subjects touched upon.

Montreal-based songwriter and guitarist Laurel Sprengelmeyer has been playing music under the moniker Little Scream since 2008. In 2011, she released The Golden Record, which Pitchfork dubbed “a stellar debut” and NPR called “an absolutely captivating record.” It was included in NPR’s Best Albums of 2011 list, and the New York Times evoked its “hints of the divine,” including Little Scream as one of the best new acts to follow at SXSW. Her second album Cult Following, which features guests including Sufjan Stevens, Mary Margaret O’Hara, and Sharon Van Etten, earned Little Scream new band of the week status from The Guardian and received five stars from Bust Magazine. Cult Following included the catchy Prince-inspired single “Love As A Weapon” which, according to the liner notes, she and her sister hoped would buy their mom, a cleaning woman in Illinois, “unlimited gift certificates to the Red Lobster.”

Since the release of Cult Following, Little Scream has stayed busy as a member of Richard Reed Parry’s Quiet River of Dust, touring with and co-writing songs from the albums Vol. 1: This Side of the River and Vol. 2: That Side of the River. A natural collaborator, she has appeared as a vocalist and/or guitarist on recordings for The National, The Barr Brothers, Will Butler, and Saltland, among others. She has appeared on two Red Hot compilations as well as charity singles to benefit the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and Standing Rock.

Speed Queen release shows will be announced shortly.
