Today, JUNO Award winning songwriter Rose Cousins shares her version of Prince’s classic, “I Would Die 4 U”, recorded together with Bear’s Den and Christof van der Ven while all were serendipitously in Toronto on a day off from tour.

“Prince died on my birthday,” Cousins says. “He was bigger than life and yet so utterly, humanly vulnerable. Everyone has their own relationship with his music; I find his story and talent fascinating and his death tragic. This particular song resonates with me and when I knew the Bear’s Den guys were in town I could hear us all singing it. We had no idea we'd all be in town at the same time until two nights before when I was at their show in Boston. I'm such a fan of these guys and I'm so pleased we got to collaborate again.”

Cousins' last project, Natural Conclusion, received notable acclaim, including a nomination for a 2018 Grammy Award, a nomination for Songwriter of the Year award at the 2018 JUNO Awards, and three wins at the East Coast Music Awards. Cousins also writes for film and TV and her songs have appeared on the programs Grey's Anatomy, Supergirl, Reign, and Nashville, among others. She has shared stages with heroic songwriters such as Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Lori McKenna, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Jann Arden, and Ron Sexsmith.

“Half Smoke” Video Still

Halifax based garage-psych quartet Walrus are today sharing the video for their new single, “Half-Smoke”, the latest to be taken from their forthcoming second album Cool To Who, set for release on October 18, 2019 via Outside Music

Directed by the Prism Prize-winning Canadian musician and illustrator, Chad VanGaalen, the video drawns on lysergic animations which find neon-tinted aliens warping into diamonds, and goblins contorting into melting castles. The new clip seeks to visually mimic the psychedelic throb of “Half-Smoke”, a track that pulls on sinewy guitar lines and a propelling rhythm.

Speaking about the track that lyrically documents a time the band were falling into the shambolic throes of a tour, vocalist Justin Murphy, says: “We had been robbed in San Fran after our window was smashed in the van, then after a show in San Diego we had a day and a half to make it to Chicago. We did it. Then we had to play Moline, Illinois after and we had run out of money. I had run out of money, and we had the best band blow-up to date. I was sure it was done. My clothes had been stolen, I was bumming cigarettes. But it could always have been worse.” It was actually this tour that led for the band's infamous Avis Rental Car story when they were banned for life for exceeding 20,000KM in three weeks.

“The ‘Half-Smoke’ video started out as a story about life on the road,” says VanGaalen, whose previous clients include Timber Timbre and Daniel Romano. “It then quickly derailed into synchronised psychedelic abstractions. I love it when this happens.” The band adds by saying: “We have been big fans of Chad's work for a long time and had been interested in doing an animated video for a while now, so it seemed like a perfect fit. You could watch it 100 times and you'd probably see something new each time.”

Formed in 2012 by two brothers, Justin (vocalist and guitarist) and Jordan Murphy (drummer), alongside two friends in Truro, Nova Scotia, the band cut their teeth in music via the traditional route of heavy touring. Intense bouts of gigging saw the quartet earn a reputation, not only for their live shows but also for the way they treat the process. Walrus, have been the recipients of some great tutelage along the way, they were signed to Dan Mangan’s Madic Records for their first album which garnered them some immediate attention and most recently, they supported The Sadies across their North American tour.

EVANGELINE GENTLE SHARES NEW VIDEO FOR “SUNDAYS”

WATCH AND SHARE “SUNDAYS” HERE

TOUR DATES BEGIN SEPTEMBER 27

SELF-TITLED LP DUE OUT SEPTEMBER 13 ON COAX RECORDS

“Evangeline Gentle's self-titled album is a triumph.” Exclaim!

“The soft beginning of lead single "Sundays" leaves ample space for Gentle's powerhouse voice...The rich country tone to "Sundays" might put "country music superstar" back in those cards, but whatever the space they create for themselves, Gentle's debut album is evidently just the beginning.” - CBC Music

“Some artists live up to their names...Evangeline Gentle would seem to be one of them,
based on the soothingly beautiful roots-pop and earthy,
Stevie Nicks-style vocals of Sundays” - Tinnitist

Today, Peterborough-based songwriter Evangeline Gentle is sharing the new video “Sundays” from their upcoming self-titled LP. The track’s swirling synths give way to a pulsating bass that opens for Gentle’s haunting and hopeful vibrato to soar above. The song’s lyrics are confessionary by nature and provide a glimpse into the deepest feelings about love, compassion, and insecurity.

“Ethereal memories of a love story come in waves as Evangeline performs to us, unaware of the world revolving around them,” says video director Rob Viscardis. “What emerges is what seems like the origin story of a long-time love, but as images of the two blissful lovers are contrasted with a sudden separation, we are left longing for something that is perhaps too good to be true.”

Due out September 13 via Coax Records, Gentle’s self-titled debut LP is rich, sweet, and lush with vibrato – only a few of the unmistakable qualities that constitute Gentle’s fervent timbre. Produced by Jim Bryson and mastered by Grammy Award Nominated Philip Shaw Bova, their songwriting on the LP possesses an authenticity and depth as rare and unique as their own journey. Born on the Northeast coast of Scotland, Gentle’s family lineage tells all. A descendent of the Codona Circus family, they have live performance in their blood and were given an unequivocal name for the stage too. Gentle has already been awarded Emerging Artist at the 2015 Peterborough Folk Fest and Best Female Vocalist of the year at the 2015 Wire Awards.

Gentle began writing their debut LP over the course of three years, collaborating with Bryson and slowly working on demos together. “During the writing years I trudged my way through deep periods of self-doubt, often wondering if I should quit music entirely,” says Gentle. “I’ve been in love with music my whole life. As a child I thought becoming a female country music superstar- long blonde curls and all was my inevitable fate. Somewhere along the way I internalized a lot of messaging about my queerness as being something that would hold me back, something that made me inherently less gifted and valuable as an artist, that I wasn’t enough for the industry and my spirit got broken. Each song on this record is a landmark on the journey toward re-establishing this spirit. I dream like a child again and though I have long since reconciled with my 11 year old self that becoming a country music superstar is not in the cards for me.”

Recorded at Bryson’s Fixed Hinge studio together with percussionists Pascal Delaquis and Matthew Greco, and vocalist Carleigh Aikins, the process for the LP began with tracks “So It Goes”, a nostalgic story telling of Gentle’s last teenage years, and “Even If”, documenting an unhealthy relationship and later distressing break up with their local dive bar.

LISTEN AND SHARE “THE STRONGEST PEOPLE HAVE TENDER HEARTS” HERE

Album opener “Drop My Name” was born out of working at a corporate fast food chain on top of another day job to try and earn enough money to make this album. “The Strongest People Have Tender Hearts” reflects on the time the #MeToo movement was taking off. “I mustered up every drop of compassion I could find and wrote that song to honour the ridiculous amount of strength it takes to stay soft in a world that can harden you with a single headline,” says Gentle. The album’s second track, “Ordinary People”, continues on that theme and was written for the “person/people in my life that keep me going when getting up in the morning is hard because I’ve spent too long reading news articles on my facebook feed,” says Gentle.

Lead single “Sundays” and album track “Neither Of Us” are love songs written around a common theme of being gentle with someone’s insecurities and affirming that they are more than enough. “Long Time Love” is a love song too, but about the magic moment where you just know the person who has stepped into your life is going to stick around.

The LP rounds out with the self-sabotaging “Digging My Grave” and “Good And Guided”, a song based on the “idea that we’re all trying our best to be good people with the information and experiences we have in the moment,” says Gentle. “That’s an idealistic view of the world, but it’s a spiritual one that I cling to to get through the day and stay open to connecting with life around me.”
