“Don't be fooled by the glittery jumpsuit. Frazey Ford is out for blood.” - NPR

“Ford tiptoes between soft jazz, smoky soul, and austere country” - Pitchfork

“It’s hard to think of another singer who suggests Dolly Parton, Ann Peebles and Feist. She phrases intuitively, waiting on a word and then drawing it out, and turns good lyrics to oatmeal, adding strange new colors to vowels, making whole syllables vanish.” - The New York Times

“Ford weaves in soul, jazz, and R&B influences inspired by icons like Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway.” - KCRW

Vancouver artist Frazey Ford is revered for her soulful voice, captivating live show, and immersive lyrical storytelling. Returning with her first new original music in five years, The Kids Are Having None of It" arrives with a stunning video today, digital single out tomorrow. The new song is an urgent activism anthem – protest music at its core, with Frazey's calm, confident warning compelled by a visceral, soulful bass guitar backbone: ‘Get out of the way / You’ve had your day / And it’s no longer how we gon’ play,’ she sings. Co-produced by Frazey and John Raham (Dan Mangan, Stars, Jon Bryant, Joshua Hyslop), the video for “Kids” was directed by Brian Lye and Jen Wieh, co-creators of Ford’s breakthrough video for Indian Ocean’s  "Done", which has over 1.7 million Youtube views.

“This song came out of a desire to envision change as though it has already happened and to champion the incredible movements that we’re seeing right now,” explains Frazey. “Beyond our collective fear and anger about what is and isn’t happening, to create an image of the wave of change that most of us would like to see. The cast of the video are all close friends, moms and neighbourhood kids that my son grew up with. We had a beautiful day, being together. I think the love of community, real relationships, and the willingness to include the experiences of others is the real basis of activism.”

Director Brian Lye adds, “One of my main goals was to put the youth we worked with in control of the messaging that appears in the video. We asked them, "what is important to you and what do you want to amplify out into the world through this music video?" My favourite section is the montage where they hold up their responses. Messages such as – Decolonize Now, Consent, Protect Trans Youth, and Smash The Patriarchy.”

“Kids” is Frazey Ford’s first release of original music since her breakthrough 2014 album Indian Ocean. Featuring Al Green’s band, The Hi Rhythm Section, Indian Ocean received the critical praises of NPR, Guardian/Observer, Mojo, Uncut, Magnet, and earned Frazey fans worldwide.

“The Kids Are Having None of It” is out digitally tomorrow, Friday, October 18, in honour of Greta Thunberg’s initiative of #FridaysForFuture. Formerly signed to Nettwerk, the new single is released by Arts & Crafts, who released two covers – "When We Get By" (D'Angelo) & "Can You Get To That" (Funkadelic) – in the summer of 2018.

“We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.” - Ursula K. Leguin

“If this isn't Jacques Greene's magnum opus, we'll be very curious to hear what is.” — Exclaim!

“Spacious and atmospheric, the emotive track is built around its titular vocal sample which twists and turns on a bed of breakbeats, fading in and out like a dream interrupted.” — Billboard, on “Do It Without You”

“Known for his genre-defying experimentation, Greene has maintained himself as one of the most riveting artists to come out of the underground dance music community...” — Hypebeast

“It’s built from a sample of THP Orchestra’s ‘Too Hot For Love’ and feels like being immersed in a percussive disco dream.” — Stereogum, on “For Love”

Jacques Greene today presents “Let Go”, the final pre-release single from Dawn Chorus, his forthcoming album out this Friday via Arts & Crafts. “Let Go” follows “For Love”, “a modern disco bop for the dumpster-fire generation” (Vulture), and lead single/video “Do It Without You”, as well as early single “Night Service” (Feat. Cadence Weapon). “Let Go” features vocals and lyrics by Rochelle Jordan, with music composed by Greene and Travis Stewart.

Greene approached the making of Dawn Chorus as if he were a band. While samples played a big part in his early output, his creative process for Dawn Chorus revolved around recording a stellar cast of musicians, arranging new parts. As a result, it’s his most collaborative project to date, featuring additional production and instrumentation from film composer Brian Reitzell (Lost In Translation), cello by London’s Oliver Coates, additional production from Clams Casino and original vocal contributions from ambient artist Julianna Barwick, rapper Cadence Weapon and singer Ebhoni, all sampled, processed and stitched back into the album.

To craft the sound of the record, he thought about the artists he held dear and researched the gear they used as a means of being in dialogue with their emotional tenor. Some of the gear he sourced included the delay that My Bloody Valentine was renowned for, as well as a compressor used by French Touch producers Alan Braxe and Fred Falke. Working with mix engineer Joel Ford (of Ford & Lopatin), he created a rule book for the album’s sonics that saw each part, from the drums to the pads, be processed in a specific way, through guitar pedals and outboard equipment.

Ada Lea’s acclaimed debut album what we say in private arrived in stores this summer via Next Door Records, and has been earning great press from outlets including Pitchfork, VICE, Mojo, Uncut, The Guardian, FADER, among many others.

The project of Montreal-based artist and musician Alexandra Levy, Ada Lea today shares the understated, soft-focus video for "180 Days" which is directed by Emilie Kahn and premiered earlier today via CLASH. She has the following to say of the inspiration behind the song:

"During that period of 180 days, I often wondered what it would be like if I ever reached the other side; a seemingly unattainable goal. This song is an homage to that dream-like period."

The clip follows additional videos for previous singles "wild heart", what makes me sad”, the party, and mercury, which earned also praise from outlets including Gorilla vs. Bear, Brooklyn Vegan, and Under The Radar.

Ada Lea will head overseas for the first time this month for a run of dates throughout Europe and the UK, including stops at London Calling in Amsterdam and the Mirrors Festival in London.

MORE ABOUT ADA LEA
To Levy - who is also a painter - music and visual art are different vessels for communicating similar ideas. “It's a world that I can build around me and sit inside,” she says. Through all her art, Levy explores the concept of womanhood as it feels and looks to her, as well as love and how it transforms over time. She doesn’t shy away from exploring uncomfortable and painful emotions, either. With the brightness of love, strength, and hope contrasted with the darkness of loss, suffering, isolation, and abandonment, the Ada Lea album what we say in private is a varied and vivid record that constantly seems to shift in the light, bringing together all the intricate influences she’s collected over the years.

what we say in private began with a need to document the ending of an important romantic relationship. Following a tormented period of staying up all night (sometimes days at a time), frantically painting or writing songs as a means of coping, she journaled for 180 days in the hope of finding herself again. She conducted this period of analysis and introspection in private, like most of her creative pursuits, and the process eventually resulted in a rebirth: a rediscovery of self and a new sense of freedom and self-acceptance. These chaotic feelings and the resulting catharsis are deeply felt in the final recording of what we say in private. Levy wanted the album to feel like a journal entry from those 180 days as she cycled through emotions. Throughout, she expresses feelings and thoughts that all humans experience behind closed doors and alone, but are conditioned to keep to themselves.
