JUNO Award winning songwriter Rose Cousins’ newest offering, Bravado, is the sound of a heart trying to open. It explores the complication of emotion, its irrational tendencies and its wisdom. It invites us to feel the courage it takes to be vulnerable. Today, Cousins shares the video for the first single from the album, “The Benefits Of Being Alone”, co-directed by Shehab Illyas and Cousins with illustrator Hannah Emmett. “I saw the whole video play in my head shortly after we finished recording the song,” says Cousins. “I imagined a Wes Anderson type scene, contrived and idyllic, with many hands helping to hold the whole thing together. This video, song and my new record, Bravado, are about juxtaposition. What version of what story is true?”

Set for release on February 21, 2020 via Outside Music, Bravado is a record for those who struggle with loneliness and those wishing they had more time alone. It’s for those attempting to make their hearts go in more than one direction and those trying to make it go in just one. It’s for those who present a version of themselves to the world that doesn’t quite match how they feel inside. It’s for those who feel misunderstood or unseen. It’s for those who have a hard time saying what they feel, who hide or can’t let themselves off the hook. It’s for those asking, ‘is this it?’ and questioning if the character they play in the movie of their lives is authentic or just a role they’ve accepted. It’s for those who have a hard time asking for help and for those desperate for and terrified of change.

“I think about how we're so disconnected,” says Cousins. “I get sucked into my phone and forget to go for a walk because of this sense of obligation that I have that convinces me to get as much work done as possible. It feels like we’re not connecting in person as much as we used to and that we may be the loneliest we've ever been. We're missing what's actually happening, like, the earth being on fire. We get caught in the spin of comparing our lives to social media depictions, false standards of a good life. I’ve been thinking about how we must be getting close to a breaking point."

For Cousins, this chapter is a personal and professional metamorphosis. She is in the producer chair, applying her years of experience, trusting her own ear and pulling thoughtfully from her network of talented colleagues.

“I booked some studio days in February with the intention of making a single and working with some Toronto based musicians I’d always wanted to including Joshua Van Tassel on drums, Robbie Grunwald on keys, Brian Kobayakawa on bass, Dean Drouillard on electric guitars and with Chris Stringer as engineer. Soon after, I realized I was chasing a theme and a feeling I’d been pondering for months and it turned into a whole record of, perhaps, my best writing.”

The record is flanked by two distinct renditions of the same song, “The Benefits of Being Alone” and “The Reprise” reinforcing the record's examination of emotional duality. Though the journey starts in Bravado’s swagger, it asks us to pause at tracks like “The Fraud” and “The Time Being (Impending Mortality Awareness Society)”, reminding and inviting us to be honest and present. The album lifts to its highest level of hope and most pop production in “The Return (Love Comes Back)”, exploiting Cousins’ collaborative nature as an international choir of friends joins in at the end. “The Lullaby (My Oldest Love)” written with Tim Baker (Hey Rosetta!), touches the desperate need for affirmation, “The Benediction (A Good Woman)”, a yearning for acceptance.

Recently, Rose Cousins shared her version of Prince’s classic, “I Would Die 4 U”, recorded together with Bear’s Den and Christof van der Ven while all were serendipitously in Toronto on a day off from tour.

Cousins' last project, Natural Conclusion, received notable acclaim, including a nomination for a 2018 Grammy Award, a nomination for Songwriter of the Year award at the 2018 JUNO Awards, and three wins at the East Coast Music Awards. Cousins also writes for film and TV and her songs have appeared on the programs Grey's Anatomy, Supergirl, Reign, and Nashville, among others. She has shared stages with heroic songwriters such as Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Lori McKenna, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Jann Arden, and Ron Sexsmith.

This month, Cousins continues on the road supporting Patty Griffin on Nov 9th and 10th, and will return to Canada in March of 2020 with John Paul White. Full tour dates can be found below.

SCATTERED CLOUDS RELEASES TWO VIDEOS FOR “MORNING AFTER”

SCC_LP_TAYS_cover.jpg

Scattered Clouds darkened the tint of summer 2019 with its new record TAKE AWAY YOUR SUMMER, a futuristic broken romance set amidst a burning dystopian landscape. Inspired by the dichotomous terrain of their hometown of Hull, Québec, the experimental outfit of Philippe Charbonneau and Jamie Kronick explores themes of political conspiracy, post-capitalism, police brutality and nihilism on their second full-length, set against a romantic backdrop of auto-fictional narratives told in both English and French prose.

Today, the band shares two videos for the album song “Morning After,” a two-part track prequel to their single/video “Days on End” that layers old analog synths with elliptical bass melodies and hand sequenced arpeggios.

Morning After Pt. 1”  is an “uneasy sleep, a lucid dream and a prelude to contempt and regret,” offers the band. Calling to mind the dystopian atmosphere of Terminator 1 or Escape From NY, the video, directed by experimental filmmakers Charles-Andre Coderre (Jerusalem In My Heart) and Guillaume Vallée, was a “spontaneous creation by dancer choreographer Kim Sanh Chau, created live with analog video camera & 16mm film projector,” Coderre says.

“Morning After Pt. 2” – a latter years Leonard Cohen-esque monologue creates a dramatic bittersweet ending, “a hazy morning filled with contempt and regret,” says frontman Charbonneau. Shot and directed by Andre Baker (Alternative Deletes), the video is cinematic, disquieting, post-romance - with cigarette smoke anxiously dancing around part two of this synthetic, heartbroken orchestral suit.

With a sonic palette that calls to mind late 70s / early 80s soundtracks like Vangelis’ Blade Runner, John Carpenter’s Escape From New York, Brad Fiedel’s The Terminator, and Tangerine Dream’s The Sorcerer, TAKE AWAY YOUR SUMMER walks the razor thin line between cacophony and delight, balancing the uneasy ecstasy of Suicide and the thundering underbelly or Liars.

TAKE AWAY YOUR SUMMER was written and performed by Philippe Charbonneau, Michael John Dubue, and Jamie Kronick in Hull, Québec, with Grammy-nominated Ottawa engineer/mixer Philip Shaw Bova. Featuring artwork based on a photo of a quietly burning dépanneur seen by Charbonneau one summer night, the album imagery captures the ominous yet seductive confines of the band’s all-too-vivid anti-utopia. The album was released on June 27, 2019 by Boiled Records, the Toronto & Philadelphia-based experimental record that released fellow Hull band FET.NAT’s Polaris Short Listed Le Mal LP earlier this year.

"Close Talker, has a way of burrowing deep under the skin.... the band recently unveiled another moody, sweetly impeccable gem in "Half Past Nine." Those bold, chiming guitars are back, this time in aid of a warmhearted rumination on moments we celebrate, romanticize and fight to preserve in our memories" – NPR

Close Talker, are thrilled to announce their new live album of How Do We Stay Here? to be released November 8 on Bandcamp, recorded during their recent IMMERSION 3D binaural Silent Headphone Concert Tour. Today, they share the documentary, The Making Of IMMERSION, a behind the scenes look at the cutting edge performances.

Close Talker has always had an appetite for pushing their music and craft to uncharted territories. With their new album How Do We Stay Here? the band felt that it was especially important to create an environment and atmosphere where the audience could truly lose themselves in the music and be apart of the whole experience on a deeper level. The result was a concert experience that is truly the first of its kind: IMMERSION (a 3D binaural Silent Headphone Concert). Taking the idea from concept to reality was a labour of love, and one that came to life through the efforts of many dedicated people rallying behind this special and rewarding project. This short documentary provides some insight into the world behind the scenes in developing this project, along with live performance footage with immersive binaural audio for you to experience a glimpse of IMMERSION.

The band says, “It would have been easier to have just left it an idea that we had dreamt up in the van, or the thought, that some band should do this someday it is pretty cool to reflect and look back and be like, 'Whoa' we're that band. Special thank you to Versa Films for their vivid storytelling and helping share IMMERSION with a wider audience.”

Regarding the live album, “It was always our intention that our special 3D headphone concert series: IMMERSION would outlive the cross Canada tour itself. With that, we've selected recordings from the tour and compiled a full representation of our new album How Do We Stay Here? live from select cities across Canada. In addition, we've mixed the album with immersive binaural audio, best experienced in its entirety wearing headphones, by yourself, and with a glass of red wine. If you can manage to achieve at least two out of the three listed above, you'll be in good shape. This tour and album represent such a special chapter for us and we hope that you too connect and resonate with the album.”

PRAISE FOR CLOSE TALKER

"The Change It Brings" is a softly ruminating track that tackles the most fickle theme of them all- time. Rolling over sinuous guitar layers and smatterings of melodic synths, lead singer Will's breathy vocals welcome you in like a hot cup of tea on a winter's day. The track then promptly sits you down and leaves you to reflect on your own memories while it soothingly plays the soundtrack to your mind. – Earmilk

“A song like "Half Past Nine" shows why the band has found success, it's full of heart and nostalgic longing for moments that have passed but have made a lasting effect for the better.” – The Wild Honey Pie

“’Pace’ is dripping with yearning and nervous anxiety set to a tight indie beat.” – Parade Mag
