Andy Shauf releases a new single/video, “Try Again” from The Neon Skyline, his new album due January 24 via Arts & Crafts. The Neon Skyline’s interconnected songs are all written, performed, arranged and produced by Shauf, and follow a simple plot: the narrator goes to his neighborhood dive, finds out his ex is back in town, and she eventually shows up. Following the “lush, jazzy retro pop-rocker” (Stereogum) “Things I Do”, “Try Again” continues to present Shauf’s distinct style of storytelling as he describes an awkwardly funny and charming reunion between the song’s narrator and his ex:

“Somewhere between drunkenness and chivalry, I hold the door open and let her pass through. She says thanks to me in a British accent and I try to answer her in the same voice. She laughs at me, says ‘What was that supposed to be?' I say 'I’m sorry, I’m from a different part of the country.’ She says
‘Come on baby, try again.’

Somewhere between drunkenness and sincerity, I smile at her for just a little too long. Charlie’s drinking wine, Judy's laughing at him, she says ‘I forget that you’re such a fancy guy.' He tips his hat, says 'M’lady, do you come here often?’ I swear I’ve seen them do this one a couple times before.
Come on baby, try again.

Somewhere between drunkenness and charity, she puts her hand on the sleeve of my coat. She says ‘I’ve missed this.’ I say ‘I know, I’ve missed you too.’ She says, ‘I was actually talking about your coat.’ She makes me laugh, oh how she makes me laugh. I just let my head sink down and fake some deep sobs.
Come on baby, try again.

Somewhere between drunkenness and jealousy, I watch her talking to some old friend. What a reunion, he recognized her across the room. How many years could there be to catch up on? And somewhere between drunkenness and honesty, I make a silent toast to the things that I do and don’t miss.
Come on baby, try again.”

The “Try Again” video was directed by Mizotte & Cabécou and is an entirely hand-made,  animated short film. “Rather than illustrating the storyline, we imagined our own offbeat tale like a parallel to the song,” says Mizotte & Cabécou. “Design, motion, colors and atmosphere are influenced by the pop and childish dream world of 70's French animation (Chapi Chapo, The Magic Roundabout).”

The Neon Skyline follows 2016’s The Party, and is Shauf’s most direct and emotionally-rich work yet. His characters are all sympathetic here, people who share countless inside jokes, shots, and life-or-death musings when the night gets hazy. On top of heartbreak, friendship, and the mundane moments of humanity that define his songwriting, Shauf makes music that explores how easy it is to find yourself in familiar patterns and repeat the same mistakes of your past. The songs on The Neon Skyline ultimately take solace in accepting that life goes on and things will be okay.

Andy Shauf will tour North America this upcoming winter. Then, after a European run, he will return stateside this spring. Tickets are on sale now and all dates can be found below.

Recently, the Montréal octet returned with two new singles “Clouds”, featuring Moonchild’s Amber Navran, and “Summer”. The eight-piece, Nick Ferraro [vocals, alto sax], Evan Crofton a.k.a. Alistair Blu [vocals, keys, synths], Scott Bevins [trumpet], Chris Vincent [trombone], Louis Stein [guitar], Milo Johnson [bass], Eric Haynes [keys, piano], and Julian Trivers [drums ]— score nostalgic lyrical ruminations with a soundscape of simmering soul, fiery funk, spirited rock, hypnotic hip-hop, and artful R&B.

For the new songs Busty and the Bass reunited with Grammy Award-Winning producer Neal Pogue [OutKast, Tyler, the Creator, Earth Wind and Fire] and for the first time, the group welcomed a guest vocalist on the record. Navran lent her unmistakable croon to “Clouds” as a slick guitar echoes through a steady and stark beat and trumpets pipe up between warbling talk box and a heartfelt hook. The song “Summer” incorporates a swell of cinematic strings, adding rich scope to the tune where vocalist Nick Ferraro describes “a shitty summer and breaking up with happiness.”

The octet met during their first week as students in the jazz program at McGill University back in 2011. They went on to drop a pair of EPs - GLAM [2015] and LIFT [2016] - before unveiling 2017’s full-length debut, Uncommon Good. In addition to packing houses on headline tours, they graced the stages of international festivals such as Made in America, Osheaga, Pinkpop, Montreal International Jazz Festival, The Great Escape, Ottawa Bluefest, and Rifflandia, playing alongside the likes of Radiohead, Anderson .Paak, and Lana Del Rey. To date, they’ve amassed over 10 million total streams and attracted the acclaim of Huffington Post and many more.

BADGE ÉPOQUE ENSEMBLE SHARE “ZEALOUS CHILD”

“Groove oriented wah wah odysseys — instrumentals that push you and pull you, that chip away at the walls we put up, that urge your primal soul to dance like no one could film you for their social feeds.” - Dominionated

“The set of seasoned improvisers glide gracefully on the murky waters of an almost instrumental album.“ - Le Devoir

Today, Badge Époque Ensemble share another track from their upcoming Nature, Man & Woman, out December 6 via Telephone Explosion. EP Opener “Zealous Child” comes as something of a sequel to the debut LP’s sole vocal featuring track “Undressed In Solitude”. This go round BÉE have teamed up with Toronto singer Dorothea Paas to ruminate on notions of spiritual wisdom overtop a progressive and climactically bombastic homebrew.

BANDCAMP / SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC

The disco-sleeved 12” EP provides a revealing glimpse of a musically omnivorous approach. The simmering new platter containing 3 songs, producing 26 minutes of dank flute-oriented atmosphere.

The A side contains 2 songs, which seem to hint at diverging future directions this eclectic combo might take moving forward. Title track “Nature, Man & Woman” closes out the side with 6 ominous minutes of mysterious provenance. Somewhere between a live performance and a collaged tapestry, the group make more explicit than ever before their affinity for beat- centric loop music. Sounding like Lonnie Liston Smith gone trip-hop for a broadcast prohibited episode of Law & Order, BÉE posit themselves here as amongst the moodiest of contemporary instrumental collectives. Little wonder that library music enthusiasts around the world have made emphatic note of the Ensemble.

2020 will see the group returning to the studio, refining new arrangements. Until then we have a generous and unusual second helping to help us puzzle over what sounds Badge Époque Ensemble may investigate next.
