Today, Brandon Wolfe Scott, best known as the guitarist and co-songwriter in the JUNO Award nominated Yukon Blonde, shares the title track from his upcoming EP, Burden On Your Shoulders.

“'Burden On Your Shoulders” was the first song I wrote and recorded at the beginning of 2019,” says Wolfe. “It's an earnest, autobiographical song about self-preservation, something I'm trying to get better at but constantly struggle with.I was hesitant to show my bandmate James Bull as it's quite personal, but I liked the song a lot and needed an outside ear, I knew he would give me an honest opinion. He immediately called with enthusiasm and told me to send over the track files so he could start mixing it. This started the process for my EP.”

In the winter months of 2019 Yukon Blonde found themselves with time off between tours,  giving Scott the opportunity to turn his tiny living room space into a minimal recording set up. It was here he wrote and produced his sophomore EP Burden On Your Shoulders.

“Being fully immersed in the recording process became a comforting experience and a constant learning curve. Working at my own pace, deliberately tracking with limitations, helped me shape a cohesive sound that feels like the most genuine thing I’ve done.”

Scott has settled into a natural songwriting style - paying homage to the golden era of the 70’s drawing inspiration from Al Stewart, Todd Rundgren and Beatle favourite; George Harrison - whilst still maintaining a modern approach through his introspective lyrics laced with lush harmonies.

Today, Tami Neilson is sharing the new video for “Ten Tonne Truck”, giving fans a “peek into the hustle and grind behind the glamour," she tells Wide Open Country. "When my brother and director Todd Neilson (Valiant Made) came up with this concept, he originally had a male actor in mind to pull the truck. But, we then agreed that having me play both the roles would be a more fitting analogy of what it's like to be an artist. There's the 'glamorous' persona that the public sees: the made-up, beehived and sequined, Instagram-worthy artist who is always smiling and perceived as successful. Then there's the reality behind all the smoke and mirrors, the relentless grind, pulling that whole thing on your back with blood, sweat and tears, head down as you try to focus on putting one foot in front of the other. That said, in preparation for all the money this single is going to make, I'm already researching used Ten Tonne Trucks online [laughs]."

No one forgets the first time they saw Tami Neilson. She can hush a room with an original song that channels the hurting spirit of Patsy Cline or the sensuality of Peggy Lee, or bring the audience to its feet on a rockabilly raver.

She’s an artist with real range, whose powerful voice can take on big ballads, golden-age country, heartfelt gospel, soul-infused R&B, Western swing, even old-style rock ’n’ roll. Tami encompasses them all and is a personality-powered cyclonic force of nature in stylishly retro attire, long lashes and a stacked-high beehive.

Previous media accolades come from both sides of the Atlantic, including Rolling Stone, which called her “a fire-breathing belter on her own terms” and the U.K.’s Guardian, which asserted that “her powerhouse voice recalls 1950s stars such as Wanda Jackson and Patsy Cline.”

Of her new album’s title, CHICKABOOM!, Tami explains, “I wanted to write an album of punchy little songs, popping firecrackers that, when stripped back to nothing but a guitar, percussion and two voices, would still go boom!”  The new collection, out February 14, 2020 on Outside Music, brings much personal and family history to the table. Returning in full force to Tami’s recording and live performance zone is her brother Jay Neilson, her co-star in the “Any Fool With A Heart” video. The clip was directed by brother Todd Neilson (ValiantMade) and highlights the twisted sense of family humor that is classic Neilson. According to Tami, “ it’s a 1950s Musical Meets Spaghetti Western series of ways to die was a perfect way to tell a story of heartbreak and unrequited love.” The duo keeps coming back to face greater perils with big smiles on their shining mugs.

Tami grew up performing across North America with Canada’s Neilson Family Band, working alongside greats such as Johnny Cash, Tanya Tucker, and Kitty Wells. With her parents Betty and Ron (her late father, a songwriter of considerable accomplishment) and two brothers Todd (drums) and Jay (bass), she spent years on the road learning her craft. This enabled Tami to explore her increasing vocal and emotional range and build a deep well of musical influences to draw upon when she started to write her own material.

Subsequently, Tami fell in love with a New Zealander, moved to the bottom of the world and began her solo career. Though she left the comforts of her loving family and musical community in Canada, over many years she built a platform for herself through open-mic nights, playing soulless casinos and the dead-air time-slots at festivals, finding a small group of fellow travellers and supportive players; a series of increasingly impressive albums followed.

The early records saw her in a self-created territory between mainstream country and alternative country, a couple recorded around the kitchen table back home in Canada with brother Jay, who is now an acclaimed producer and songwriter. Then awards started coming in New Zealand for albums that added breadth to her “country singer” label: Best Female Artist, Best Country Album, Best Country Song, an APRA Silver Scroll (songwriting) award and Album of the Year nominations. Her 2014 release Dynamite! received rave reviews in Britain’s MOJO and The Guardian named it a Top 10 Best Country Music Album. Her songs appeared on the Netflix series Wanted and the terrestrial TV series Nashville.

Tami Neilson’s singing and writing is too big to contain, as entertainment company HMV Canada noted: “There are singers and then there is Tami Neilson, for whom the word singer just isn’t big enough.”

The road has now led to CHICKABOOM!, which is something different again, and even more personal. “In the past year, I started to notice something,” Tami says. “The artists I would spend time with backstage at festivals, the ones I gravitated to the most and followed on social media ... artists like the Secret Sisters, Shovels & Rope, Kasey Chambers, Brandi Carlile ... they all had family performing with them. When you tour away from loved ones, it makes a world of difference to have part of your village with you on the road. Not to mention, nothing can come close to that special blend of blood harmonies and silent communication that only comes from being onstage with a person for over 30 years. Family has always been a huge part my music-writing, recording and creating with me, but I wanted family on this project and on the road with me again.” Brother Jay flew to Auckland, New Zealand from Toronto to record a selection of new songs that have unmistakable sibling magic and harmonies. “I don’t think he quite understands what he’s gotten himself into but now the album’s coming out it’s a bit too late. Sucker,” she laughs.

And if you’ve missed Tami— on record or in concert — then you are in for a treat ... and you might not quite understand what you’ve gotten yourself into either.

Multi-award-winning, platinum-selling singer-songwriter and environmental activist Sarah Harmer will release Are You Gone, her first album in a decade, on February 21st, 2020 via Arts & Crafts. A deeply personal and political collection of songs motivated by the beauty of life, the urgency of the climate crisis, and the question of loss, Sarah called the album a spiritual successor of sorts to her acclaimed 2000 debut, You Were Here, which made many year-end critics’ lists, and which TIME called the year’s best debut album. Its simple title, Are You Gone, is a meditation on the idea of presence, and a bookend to the questions posed on You Were Here - a sharpened, more electric confrontation with the realities of nature and human nature.

The result of an unshakeable inclination to make music in conflict with a lifestyle more attuned to privacy, quiet, and activism, Sarah wrote Are You Gone gradually over the last decade as she traded music for grassroots organizing as her “day job.” Between co-founding the citizen’s organization PERL (Protecting Escarpment Rural Land) and leading the coalition’s successful efforts to prevent a quarry from being built on the Niagara Escarpment, she became a fixture in local politics and advocacy, while keeping her musical chops fresh by writing and playing casually with friends. Finally, in 2019, while pondering the “ghosts” of loss, capitalism’s gluttony and music’s potential as a public platform, Sarah got to work on Are You Gone, her most sophisticated record to date.

Lead track “New Low” captures the prescient energy of the album – a rollicking, empowering electric guitar-laced call-for-uprising in the face of global disasters. Inspired by the increase in community action that she saw in the wake of the 2017 shooting at a Quebec mosque, the Women’s March, and Climate Rallies, Sarah says of “New Low”:

“I was seeing more of my public square and many more people out protesting and standing vigil, beyond the usually dedicated Indigenous leaders and social justice activists. I met with Queen's University students who were organizing to push the university to divest from fossil fuel investments, and then met with the principal of the university. When pressed, he dismissed the idea of divestment largely because he said it wouldn't make a difference to the fossil fuel industry, and also that sizeable donations and sponsorships made to the university by former students now at oil and gas companies created a 'grey area' of policy. The term stuck with me.  Sometimes it's good to see the nuance of a situation, and sometimes the calls for nuance are just straight-up cop outs.

I hope this song gets people to their feet, and not only to dance.”

Encompassing a stylistic range from barebones folk to layered indie rock, album opener “St. Peter’s Bay” blends melancholic vocals and smooth atmospherics to effectively conjure the feeling of standing at dusk overlooking an endless sea, while “Take Me Out” is a modern, punchy alt-rock take on the near impossibility of letting go. “What I Was to You” is a tribute to Harmer’s lifelong friend Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip, and psychedelic-tinged piano ballad “The Lookout” tackles the angst of love-across-timezones. Penultimate track “Shoemaker”, about Sarah discovering an old book and census of her great great Glaswegian grandfather, calls to mind the gently ominous, slowly shifting chords of Sparklehorse before transforming into a gorgeous, almost-crescendoing show of Sarah’s vocal range. “See Her Wave” wraps the album with an acoustic goodbye written in memoriam to another friend who moved on.

Sarah has performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, Ellen, has been nominated for the Polaris Music Prize, garnered nine JUNO Award nominations and two wins, and been widely praised for her “razor-sharp songwriting chops” (NPR Music) and “plainly hooky” melodic sensibility (Rolling Stone).

In addition to Are You Gone, Arts & Crafts has also announced that it is reissuing Sarah Harmer’s entire vinyl discography, including first-time vinyl editions of Songs For Clem, You Were Here, All of Our Names, and I’m A Mountain, and the first reprint of Oh Little Fire. All titles including Are You Gone are available for pre-order now.
