Today, Grammy-nominated and JUNO Award-winning songwriter Rose Cousins’ shares the new video for “The Return (Love Comes Back)” from her upcoming LP, Bravado, set for release by Outside Music on February 21.

About the song, Cousins told PopMatters, "The human ability to give care and tenderness while experiencing everyday struggle is tremendous. We witness the greatness in each other, for each other, as we find it hard, even sometimes impossible, to experience it in ourselves. 'The Return (Love Comes Back)' reminds us that we are simply that - human - with and without superpowers. That in giving, we see it return to us."

Cousins describes Bravado as a record for those who struggle with loneliness and those wishing they had more time alone - for those who struggle to connect with others, or even to connect with their true selves. “I think about how we’re so disconnected,” says Cousins. “I get sucked into my phone and forget to go for a walk because of this sense of obligation I have that convinces me to get as much work done as possible. We’re missing what’s actually happening. I’ve been thinking about how we must be getting close to a breaking point.”

For Cousins, Bravado also marks a chapter of personal and professional growth: she is the producer on the record, applying her years of experience, trusting her own ear and pulling thoughtfully from her network of talented colleagues. “I booked some studio days with the intention of making a single and working with some Toronto based musicians I’d always wanted to including Joshua Van Tassel on drums, Robbie Grunwald on keys, Brian Kobayakawa on bass, Dean Drouillard on electric guitars and with Chris Stringer as engineer. Soon after, I realized I was chasing a theme and a feeling I’d been pondering for months and it turned into a whole record of, perhaps, my best writing.”

Toronto-based six-piece outfit Jaunt opens the New Year with “Nostalgia For The Present Moment”, the lead single from their forthcoming full-length debut album due out this Spring.

“The title of the song, ‘Nostalgia For The Present Moment’, came well before any of the actual lyrics were written,” says singer/guitarist Tom Helliwell. “However, the idea of being aware and in the moment helped to guide the overall theme of the song. It is about being open to change and how such an openness can foster new and better habits. The lyrics are a kind of post-mortem of past negative thought and behaviour patterns. It is about looking back with a sense of gratitude and calm that one no longer thinks or feels that way. It is a celebration of how we learn and change and forgive ourselves and others.”

Today, Dana Gavanski announces her debut album Yesterday Is Gone, out via Flemish Eye Records on March 27, 2020. To mark the announcement, and following her acclaimed single Catch, Dana is sharing her newest single Good Instead of Bad”. The album is now available for pre-order today.

Dana reflects on her experiences that led her to writing her debut album and lead single “Good Instead of Bad”, “it’s about reflecting on the end of a relationship and how quickly things change,” she explains. “The desire to make up for everything that wasn’t done or wasn’t done right. The muddiness of breaking up, and not knowing if it’s the right decision. Not saying the right things, not being able to express the complexity of what we’re feeling. Things change and that’s that - not being able to turn back and undo a bad move. It’s an attempt to see from the other’s perspective and understand how hard it is for them as well. Reflecting on the intractability of certain decisions.”

By turns break-up album, project of curiosity, and, as Dana puts it, “a reckoning with myself”, Yesterday Is Gone is her attempt to “learn to say what I feel and feel what I say” - an album of longing and devotion to longing, and of the uncertainty that arises from learning about oneself, of pushing boundaries, falling hard, and getting back up.

Following Gavanski’s first EP Spring Demos, Yesterday Is Gone reflects Dana’s aim “to make something bigger, more thought through”. Steeped in determination and uncertainty in equal measure – the album took shape after she returned from a writing residency in Banff, Alberta. She’d begun to learn the art of empty time, of being alone with her emotions, losing herself in a landscape. She thought of Vashti Bunyan, riding in a horse and cart for hours and writing, writing, writing. She considered how she might use writing to make sense of her life after the tumults of a break-up and a new city. Adrift in Toronto, Dana struggled to feel at home and connected to people, but the solitude also allowed her to ground herself in writing. She kept office-style hours at her bedroom desk every day until she started to understand the writing process, to see that “transforming a burning desire into something clear and tangible is a vulnerable and delicate act. You have to be able to let things happen, to accept losing control.”

Born in Vancouver to a Serbian family, and now splitting her time between Montreal, Toronto, and the UK, Dana is truly a citizen of the world. “Often we have to go a little far in one direction to learn something about ourselves,” Dana says. The months of solitary writing and self-doubt testify to this, but they’ve led to Yesterday Is Gone: an optimistic, steely-eyed gaze into the future.
