NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES BEGIN FEBRUARY 7

"The Neon Skyline is a crystallization of everything Shauf has been working meticulously to perfect throughout his rise to international acclaim — his characterization, world-building and ear for arrangements. Shauf's ability to imbue his characters with plenty of nuance, quirk, charm and flaw in brisk scenes is impressive enough, but his need to craft full worlds around them put him head and shoulders above his peers." - Exclaim!

"The Neon Skyline is wistful, but also sweet, philosophical, self-deprecating and very relatable." - NOW Toronto (NNNNN)

“Not many songwriters can get away with piling on the dialogue and forgoing choruses almost entirely, but Shauf draws you in with all those canny musical flourishes and maintains a hypnotic presence...The closer you pay attention to the breezy facade, the deeper you’re drawn into his vignette.” - Stereogum, Album of the Week

Andy Shauf’s new album The Neon Skyline is out now on Arts & Crafts. The interconnected songs were all written, performed, arranged and produced by Shauf, and follow a simple plot: the narrator goes to his neighborhood dive, finds out his ex is back in town, and she eventually shows up. It’s densely layered with an abundance of charming moments. His characters are all sympathetic here, people who share countless inside jokes, shots, and life-or-death musings when the night gets hazy.

Shauf recently released a new video for “Neon Skyline”, which was directed by Colin Medley and features Shauf in his studio in Toronto. “Over the course of the last few years I'd come by and take photos and listen to whatever new songs he'd been working on,” says Medley. “Sometimes we'd go to the Skyline, but quite often we'd never leave the studio, staying up all night turning each other on to different songs. At some point Andy put up a dartboard. I guess I just tried to capture those nights and pay tribute to Parkdale, the neighbourhood where we both live.”

MORE PRAISE FOR THE NEON SKYLINE

"...the intimate and compelling Neon Skyline (set in a real-life Toronto watering hole) unfurls gracefully and gradually, chronicling a night of boozy camaraderie, nostalgic yearning and romantic revelation that will be familiar to anyone who’s ever had to confront love vs. loneliness at last call. Fashioned from the multi-talented multi-instrumentalist’s bittersweet melodies, lazily drawled vocals and powerful mellow brand of orch-tinged folk-pop, this modest masterwork might be the most Canadian concept album ever." - Tinnitist

"The entirety of Neon Skyline is so emotionally direct and engaging that the spoils are best left to discover on your own. There is no doubt that Shauf has honed his talents over the years and now they are razor sharp, witty and winning and the album is a perfect example of an artist come into their own." - Northern Transmissions

“Throughout the record, Shauf’s warm melodies and dry humour make the atmosphere inside ‘The Neon Skyline’ feel tangible” - Loud & Quiet“Shauf’s wryly charming songs for the hapless and hungover make virtuosity seem effortless” - Record Collector

“A remarkably evolved variety of break-up album, one whose match of melodicism and bruised romanticism makes it somehow suggestive of Lou Reed’s ‘Berlin’ as re-written by Paul Simon.” – Uncut

PONDERCAST EPISODE 56 : CHILLY GONZALES

Screen Shot 2020-01-23 at 7.12.10 PM.png

Pondercast Episode 56 is an unedited interview between Laurie Brown and Chilly Gonzales about his career and how he created a musical life that is a full expression of all his talents. Those talents now include creating a music academy called the Gonzervatory, that helps other musicians find their own unique path.

This episode is about becoming more yourself. In an artistic world that loves to put artists in boxes - Chilly has refused to play that game. He lays out how he did it in this interview. Thanks to Chilly, you can heard three tracks off his Solo Piano III album in this episode.

The simple life lesson to ‘be yourself’ can never be heard too often. Chilly and Laurie take another swing at it here.

Today, Grammy-nominated and JUNO Award-winning songwriter Rose Cousins’ shares the new video for “The Return (Love Comes Back)” from her upcoming LP, Bravado, set for release by Outside Music on February 21.

About the song, Cousins told PopMatters, "The human ability to give care and tenderness while experiencing everyday struggle is tremendous. We witness the greatness in each other, for each other, as we find it hard, even sometimes impossible, to experience it in ourselves. 'The Return (Love Comes Back)' reminds us that we are simply that - human - with and without superpowers. That in giving, we see it return to us."

Cousins describes Bravado as a record for those who struggle with loneliness and those wishing they had more time alone - for those who struggle to connect with others, or even to connect with their true selves. “I think about how we’re so disconnected,” says Cousins. “I get sucked into my phone and forget to go for a walk because of this sense of obligation I have that convinces me to get as much work done as possible. We’re missing what’s actually happening. I’ve been thinking about how we must be getting close to a breaking point.”

For Cousins, Bravado also marks a chapter of personal and professional growth: she is the producer on the record, applying her years of experience, trusting her own ear and pulling thoughtfully from her network of talented colleagues. “I booked some studio days with the intention of making a single and working with some Toronto based musicians I’d always wanted to including Joshua Van Tassel on drums, Robbie Grunwald on keys, Brian Kobayakawa on bass, Dean Drouillard on electric guitars and with Chris Stringer as engineer. Soon after, I realized I was chasing a theme and a feeling I’d been pondering for months and it turned into a whole record of, perhaps, my best writing.”

Cousins’ last project, Natural Conclusion, received notable acclaim, including a nomination for a 2018 Grammy Award, a nomination for Songwriter of the Year award at the 2018 JUNO Awards and three wins at the East Coast Music Awards. Cousins also writes for film and TV and her songs have appeared on the programs Grey’s Anatomy, Supergirl, Reign, and Nashville, among others.
