Today, celebrated songwriter Charlotte Cornfield is announcing In My Corner, a new 4 song EP  featuring two originals and covers by Lucinda Williams and Yo La Tengo. “The idea was to have some fun exploring rhythm and space in the studio without overthinking the little details that one tends to stew over while making a record,” says Cornfield.

Recorded together with Sam Gleason and Evan Cartwright, In My Corner will be released via Next Door Records on March 20. The EP’s first single, “In My Corner” is a spacious romp about chance encounters on the road. “Life as a touring musician is full of transient friendships and sprawling geography,” says Cornfield. “Sometimes there’s no rhyme or reason to where and when you might cross paths with someone you haven’t seen in a while. This is a song about the beauty and inconsistency of those friendships that transcend time and distance. And really, it’s about people being there for each other.”

The video for “In My Corner” was shot and directed by Charlotte’s brother Joe Cornfield. “We initially had a concept but scrapped it in favour of spontaneous movement. We just walked around my neighbourhood and I danced to the song - it was very freeing.”

Track two on In My Corner is a cover of Lucinda Williams’ “Fruits Of My Labour”. “When I first heard this song, I was so struck by the poetry of it,” says Cornfield. “Each verse is its own stanza, and the music just lifts the words to the fore. At first I just wanted memorize the lyrics, which was a beautiful exercise in and of itself, but I loved singing it so much that I started doing it at my live shows. It felt natural to record it. I feel like this song really represents where I’m at in life right now: resolved in some ways, moving on, just trying to enjoy it.”

The other cover on the EP is Yo La Tengo’s “You Can Have It All” and it was only after Cornfield recorded the song that she realized that the Yo La Tengo version is actually a cover of a funk tune from the 70’s, written by Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch. “Our take on it is very much an homage to Yo La Tengo version, but I wanted to enter the groove and ride on the positivity sentiment of the song. When I hear it and play it, it’s like therapy.”

The EP finishes with a love song called “Upstate”, “‘cause not all ballads need to be sad,” says Cornfield. “I wanted it to be sparse and open, and I left room for a couple of little instrumental touches that accentuate the lyrics. I let the words guide this one, and the rest of it flowed from there.”

In the past, Cornfield has toured extensively in North America and Europe and has supported a huge range of artists including Tim Baker, Broken Social Scene, Anais Mitchell, Daniel Romano, and Sam Amidon. This Spring, she will headline a run of tour dates throughout North America before joining Sarah Harmer in May on the West Coast. Full tour dates can be found below.

Last year, Cornfield released the Polaris Music Prize long listed album The Shape Of Your Name which NOW Magazine called “a gorgeous collection of detail-rich folk songs” and Exclaim! said was her “songwriting at its most biting, lucid and nourished.” On the side, she is an in-demand drummer and musician and has worked closely with Tim Darcy of Ought, Molly Burch, Adrian Underhill, and members of Lake Street Dive
