Today, Canadian 8-piece collective, Busty and the Bass, share their new single “Baggy Eyed Dopeman” featuring legendary founder of Parliament/Funkadelic George Clinton. Clinton blesses the track with unfettered interstellar psychedelic funkiness like only he can. Producer Neal Pogue, who has recently worked on numerous iterations of modern funk and jazz [Tyler The Creator, DRAM, KAYTRANADA, Anderson .Paak], took the band under his wing and helped draw a line from the explosive Parliament-esque chorus to the genre-bending soul and R&B of OutKast’s The Love Below (which earned Pogue a Grammy Award for his mixing and engineering). The result is a joyous, bouncy single that carries the torch of its forebears.

Busty and the Bass have officially signed to indie record label, Arts & Crafts, home to Broken Social Scene, Andy Shauf, Gord Downie, Sarah Harmer, and more. In March, the octet will be touring in North America with shows in Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City. More tour dates to be announced soon.

The octet, Nick Ferraro [vocals, alto sax], Evan Crofton a.k.a. Alistair Blu [vocals, keys, synths], Scott Bevins [trumpet], Chris Vincent [trombone], Louis Stein [guitar], Milo Johnson [bass], Eric Haynes [keys, piano], and Julian Trivers [drums]—score nostalgic lyrical ruminations with a soundscape of simmering soul, fiery funk, spirited rock, hypnotic hip-hop, and artful R&B.

The multinational band met during their first week as students in the jazz program at McGill University back in 2011. Beginning as an instrumental act, they capitalized on any and every gig they could, taking $100 for a three-hour set or exchanging tunes for wine and hors d’oeuvres at a cocktail party. They went on to drop a pair of EPs - GLAM [2015] and LIFT [2016] - before unveiling 2017’s full-length debut, Uncommon Good. In addition to packing houses on headline tours, they graced the stages of international festivals such as Made in America, Osheaga, Pinkpop, Montreal International Jazz Festival, The Great Escape, Ottawa Bluesfest, and Rifflandia, playing alongside the likes of Radiohead, Anderson .Paak, and Lana Del Rey.

“Moving from upbeat celebrations of time with oneself into sombre compositions depicting loneliness, Bravado is never prescriptive and entirely candid.” - Exclaim!

“Cousins has a disarmingly fluid vocal tone and an ability to convey the most internalized emotions - disappointment, grief, resolve, forbearance - without an ounce of fuss.” - NPR Music

“When Rose Cousins sings she soars and swoops, never to show off but always in service to the song.” - Associated Press

“[Cousins’] ability to see through the pain and bleakness of the world to find the light that connects us all proves that she indeed has a fire that burns in her soul and catches to her music, art, and the world she’s so powerfully conscious of.” - No Depression

“With Bravado, Rose Cousins has proven that, despite the streaming age, artists can still delicately craft bodies of work that are cohesive and meaningful.” - Atwood Magazine

Grammy-nominated and JUNO Award-winning songwriter Rose Cousins’ new video “The Lullaby (My Oldest Love)” debuts today. The song is featured on Cousins’ new album, Bravado, out now from Outside Music.

Cousins describes Bravado as a record for those who struggle with loneliness and those wishing they had more time alone - for those who struggle to connect with others, or even to connect with their true selves. “I think about how we’re so disconnected,” says Cousins. “I get sucked into my phone and forget to go for a walk because of this sense of obligation I have that convinces me to get as much work done as possible. We’re missing what’s actually happening. I’ve been thinking about how we must be getting close to a breaking point.”

For Cousins, Bravado also marks a chapter of personal and professional growth: she is the producer on the record, applying her years of experience, trusting her own ear and pulling thoughtfully from her network of talented colleagues. “I booked some studio days with the intention of making a single and working with some Toronto based musicians I’d always wanted to including Joshua Van Tassel on drums, Robbie Grunwald on keys, Brian Kobayakawa on bass, Dean Drouillard on electric guitars and with Chris Stringer as engineer. Soon after, I realized I was chasing a theme and a feeling I’d been pondering for months and it turned into a whole record of, perhaps, my best writing.”

Pantayo explores what’s possible for contemporary kulintang music with the atonal blend of kulintang ensemble instruments with vocals and electronic production. The album features eight diverse songs speaking to Pantayo’s musical influences as queer diasporic Filipinas. Produced by Yamantaka // Sonic Titan’s alaska B, Pantayo was written and recorded from 2016-2019 in Toronto.

Pantayo is an audio diary of how the ensemble has grown together as writers and performers. The songwriting process started with members workshopping and performing traditional kulintang pieces from the Southern Philippines, often instrument-switching on the kulintang, agongs, sarunays, gandingan, bandir, and dabak. Adapting kick drums and synths to the modal tuning of the gongs further expanded Pantayo’s ability to incorporate modern musical expressions such as punk and R&B. “If you listen to the recordings of our rehearsals and songwriting sessions, you can hear us deconstructing the kulintang parts section-by-section and practicing our songs in different styles” says keyboardist and vocalist Eirene Cloma. “You can also hear how close we’ve gotten and how our creative workflow strengthened over the years.”

Grounded in the interpretation of kulintang music, Pantayo can be a vehicle for discussions around diasporic Filipino identity. All five members have different experiences of settling in Canada and with that comes their relationships with music. Kat Estacio, co-founder of Pantayo, says “One way that we can make this world feel like home for folks like us is to mix the kulintang music that we learned with different sounds and song structures that feel familiar to us."

Pantayo's self-titled record will be released on May 8, 2020 via Telephone Explosion Records.
