Today, Montreal four-piece TOPS release their newest album I Feel Alive via their own label Musique TOPS. On the new album, their trademark sound of beguiling melodies over soft-rock grooves, with touches of '80s sophisti-pop and a contemporary experimental palette is intact, but bolder and more expansive. The songs manage to be both immediately catchy and deceptively deep, with Penny's literary lyrics adding an extra dimension to the pure pop hooks. Satisfying yet far from predictable, I Feel Alive is a record to be savored, revealing itself slowly, gaining power and poignancy with each listen.

TOPS began to write I Feel Alive in Montreal after an extended sabbatical where all members lived in different cities without working on new material or touring. Coming together with a renewed sense of energy, the result is an introspective and resilient album that immediately hits and lingers. The record is their fourth full-length, following 2017's Sugar At The Gate and follows singles "Echo of Dawn" and "Seven Minutes" from last year. The album also includes previous singles "Direct Sunlight", which singer Jane Penny described as "a song to remind myself that it's up to me to choose the perspective that I take,"  "Colder & Closer", which came with a striking Mashie Alam-directed thermal vision video, the upbeat "Witching Hour", and the album's title-track.

The artwork for TOPS' fourth LP sets the tone for the music enclosed. Inspired by the work of photographer Thomas Ruff, TOPS' vocalist Jane Penny stares bare-faced down the lens-simple and un-posed, yet striking with starkness and vulnerability.

The image captures the fraught nature of being alive, which the 11 tracks on the album explore. Penny's remarkably expressive voice is front and centre. On this record more than any other, she sings with passion and energy, without sacrificing the honesty and introspection that gives her voice its depth. The songs cover a range of experiences but at its heart I Feel Alive is a record about resilience, the ways we can grow from for our pain and the strength that comes from learning to stand on your own as an individual.

For I Feel Alive, the band members convened in a basement studio in Montreal, recording for the first time with keyboardist Marta Cikojevic who joined the band as a live member in 2017. "From the first time we practiced with her it was clear that we were in sync musically, and we found ourselves improvising together at the first rehearsal" says Penny. "Having Marta manning the keys allowed me to reach for my flute, and gave me the chance to integrate my flute playing with the writing process, using it as an expressive instrument rather than more production element which it has been in the past."

She continues: "We'd spent a lot of time apart, not working on new stuff or touring, just living life, all in different cities," says Penny. When we went to make I Feel Alive we all had a good sense of what we were trying to do and a renewed energy towards playing together. The goal was to get in a room together and play, not holding anything back."

"It was a quick process," says guitarist and fellow song-writer David Carriere. "We would work all day writing a song and then demo them the same evening, relying on our natural chemistry as a band to let the songs come into their own." The band's line-up is completed by Riley Fleck on drums.

Title track "I Feel Alive" is a bracing pop gem with darker undertones. An ode to new love, Penny sings "I feel alive looking in your eyes" with the exuberance that comes with the early stages of romance, the discovery of a deep love. But love is complicated, and within the joy and happiness is the pain of leaving someone else behind. "When I saw you wanted to spend the night with someone else at home," she sings, "I knew it wasn't right." This honest admission that happiness can come at the expense of others adds another dimension to the song's ecstatic energy. True love defies us to overcome others expectations, and that's a good thing. People may be watching, but why should you care.

Opposing and it, "Colder and Closer" is a sonic departure, with programmed synths and metallic drumming, the song shimmers. A tribute to seeking meaning in an increasingly confusing world Penny sings "Searching constellations/seeing if the stars align." But she doesn't take comfort in the stars, rejecting fate as something arbitrary, though not quite meaningless. "Signs are myths like nations/shapes drawn over crooked lines."The song is swift and lean, a pop confection, but it's also ripe with meditations on the social isolation that plagues casual intimacy. It's a prime example of the way TOPS layer meaning within pop songwriting. Beneath the soaring melodies and crisp production, I Feel Alive balances the giddiness of a new relationship with the agony of leaving old things behind. It's an introspective record that you can dance to, music that hits in an immediate rush but sticks around, lingering like the memory of a perfect doomed love affair-both the joy and the pain, until it becomes a part of your life forever.

Listening to an Elwins record feels like coming home at the end of a long day. The Newmarket four-piece has made a decade-plus long career out of carefully crafting clever and cozy tunes. An Elwins song is just as comfortable in your headphones as you walk as it is being blasted from the sound system at one of their vibrant live shows.

Taking a break from their prolific touring schedule, which most recently has found them playing alongside acts such as Passion Pit, Metric, and Born Ruffians, The Elwins took to a handful of studios to record some new material for a new LP which is due out later this year on their own Pink Eye Recordings label. Self-produced by the band, with a diverse and detailed sound reflecting influences from 70s AM-radio pop to the mid-2000s alternative that the band was borne out of, the record is a prime showcase for the collective magic of these four talented songwriters.

The first new track the band are sharing from those sessions, “Take Me All The Way”, “fits in that zone I love, where it’s an upbeat sounding song with sad/introspective lyrics,” says bassist Francesco Figliomeni. “Very excited for this to be the first taste of what people hear from the new album, I feel like this is one of the songs that helped us dial in where we wanted to head vibe wise.”

The song itself is “more or less wondering if someone can help fill the void in your life,” says guitarist / vocalist Matthew Sweeney. “In this song, I think it’s a little more of a quick fix to the problem found in being reckless and spontaneous. The lyrics come from a place of desperation in just wanting more from life.”

CANADA’S MUSIC INDUSTRY RALLIES TO CREATE MUSICTOGETHER

ONLINE PERFORMANCE INITIATIVE WILL PROVIDE $300,000 OF RELIEF TO ONTARIO MUSICIANS

VISIT MUSICTOGETHER.CA NOW

April 2, 2020 (Toronto, ON) - In an effort to provide a cash injection to Ontario musicians impacted by the effects of COVID-19, members of the Canadian music community with support from the Ontario Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries have come together to create an emergency relief fund totalling $300,000. Launching today, MusicTogether.ca will facilitate live concert streams by at least 300 Ontario-based artists, each of whom will receive a one-time performance fee of $1,000.

The initial fund has been committed thanks to $150,000 from music community funders (full list below), with $150,000 in matching funds coming from the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries as a component of the Ontario Live initiative. Arts & Crafts and Shopify Inc. collectively donated resources to together create and develop MusicTogether.ca – a web platform where artists can apply for the funding, and where audiences can find information on upcoming live-streamed performances from Ontario musicians. Musicians will also use the platform to sell merchandise and take donations, receiving the tools and specialized content to help them create their own online store supported by Shopify. Musicians will also receive $100 in Facebook Ad credits.

"This is happening to all of us," says Ontario musician and Arts & Crafts co-founder Kevin Drew. "MusicTogether is our effort to bring much-needed financial support to musicians throughout the province and keep a light shining on the glorious experience that is live music.”

MusicTogether was founded by Raja Khanna, Gary Slaight, Jeffrey Remedios, Oliver Johnson, Arts & Crafts and Daniel Debow (partners in Toronto’s The Root Down Studio).

MusicTogether has been supported financially by the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries as a component of the Ontario Live initiative. Ontario Live will serve as a customer-friendly marketplace that makes it easy for consumers to buy from, do business with, or otherwise support Ontario artists, attractions, festivals and other cultural industries.

“Ontario remains open for artists, and open for musicians, and open for online business during these unprecedented times,” said Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries. “We’re proud to match MusicTogether with a $150,000 investment to grow the new Ontario Live virtual marketplace to provide our creative industries a platform to engage audiences remotely to help stop the spread of COVID-19.”

Other title sponsors include Slaight Music and Arts & Crafts, as well as industry contributors listed below. Music fans are encouraged to support MusicTogether.ca with direct donations. MusicTogether is run by volunteers with 100% of funds going to working musicians affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

In addition to curated performers selected by the programmers listed below, Ontario artists can apply to be a part of the MusicTogether series. Applications will be assessed by a juried panel of established members of the music community. Applicants must be Canadian citizens over age 18 residing in Ontario in order to be eligible. Music lovers can find information on upcoming performances via the MusicTogether.ca hub. All performances will be hosted via the artist’s own social media channels and shared via MusicTogether.ca.

The goal of MusicTogether is to highlight diverse artists in this province, providing a platform inclusive of all walks of life regardless of genre or style. Please visit MusicTogether.ca for more information and full eligibility requirements. MusicTogether.ca provides a hub to facilitate live music experiences to be enjoyed from the comfort and safety of our homes, while supporting the local music community that is so essential to who we are and that will provide the soundtrack for the bright future we dream of.
