Donovan Woods is “no stranger to making music that tugs at the heart-strings” (FADER), and his poetic new video for “Grew Apart”, the alluring new song previewing his forthcoming album, is available everywhere today.

Produced by Cherie Sinclair (Big Sean, Carly Rae Jepsen) and directed by Woods’ long-time collaborator Ryley Burghall the video was shot in Toronto. Co-written by Woods, Logan Wall, and Travis Wood, “Grew Apart” showcases Woods’ proclivity for intimate songwriting and has earned more than 300k streams on streaming platforms.

"’Grew Apart’ is about the little lies inside the words we use when we're hurting after a relationship ends,” says Woods. “We wanted to tell a story in the video about men trying to help each other, and fucking it up, but trying. Men seem to think that there's some physical trial we need to put ourselves through when we're lovesick - drinking, fighting. The wrongheadedness of that idea is on display here. So often it feels like we can't escape those breakup clichés. The song and the video are about why that might be.”

On Saturday, April 11, Woods will participate in the Human To Human Facebook Live event benefiting PLUS1’s COVID-19 relief fund in partnership with MusiCares and Sweet Relief. The livestream event will feature artists Jewel, The Head and The Heart’s Jonathan Russell, Grouplove, and more. Woods will perform a 15 minute set at 2:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM CT and fans can watch live on Facebook and YouTube.

Today, Mister Nobu (the solo project of Choir! Choir! Choir!’s Nobu Adilman) is sharing the new video for “Best Of Me”, the first single from his recently released album, TAVIE. “For five days this past December, I found myself on Pamalican Island, south of Manila, a paradise that features the most stunning beach and sky I've ever experienced,” Adilman tells Exclaim!. “Jet-lagged and armed with only a phone, my director pal Romeo Candido and I walked the beach for a couple early mornings and made my first video for the album. The huge expanse, emptiness, and beauty of our surroundings complimented the tune Best Of Me. And watching it now, opposed to most films and tv shows that feature people interacting pre-corona virus, it feels like it was made for a time of physical distancing.”

MORE ABOUT TAVIE

TAVIE features twelve songs that mark the highs and lows of a relationship slowly falling apart. It’s kind of a happy/sad thing that’ll appeal to people okay with having feelings. TAVIE was produced by Rob Benvie (Thrush Hermit, Bankruptcy), mixed by Byron Kent Wong, mastered by Noah Mintz.

The album is “mostly about connection,” says Adilman. “From my TV work to music stuff, I generally like to explore human interaction by throwing everyone into weird and collaborative creative environments. Music has a beautiful way of pulling people’s guards down, and cutting through lots of emotional red tape quickly. Music helps me process my emotions, my life, and, if I can get it down in a song, then I feel more resolved.”

Some have said they hear traces of Lennon, others McCartney, perhaps some Dennis Wilson, maybe some Judee Sill and Sibylle Baier, but here's hoping for .01% of Frank Ocean.

TAVIE was produced by Rob Benvie (Thrush Hermit/Bankruptcy), and mixed by Byron Kent Wong, mastered by Noah Mintz at Lacquer Channel Mastering. Mister Nobu is joined by many friends including Benvie, Mike Belitsky (The Sadies), Matt Murphy (The Super Friendz/Flashing Lights/TUNS), Moshe Fisher Rozenberg (Absolutely Free), members of Choir! Choir! Choir!, and Danielle Duval, with string arrangements by Chris A. Cummings (Marker Starling) + Benvie.

Nobu Adilman is one of the two founding members of Choir! Choir! Choir!, the international phenomenon that has collaborated with David Byrne, Patti Smith (twice!), Stewart Copeland, Rufus Wainwright, Brandi Carlile, and more. They’ve wracked up millions of views on YouTube, sung for Lionel Richie on American Idol, been the subject of a half-hour PBS All Arts special for their 2019 performance at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, and performed at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. Even Rick Astley dropped by their Toronto weekly to RickRoll a sold-out crowd! And, most recently, held a gig at the border between Mexico and the US, with Nobu leading a group of singers from a stage in Tijuana, and his partner, on the other side of the wall, in San Diego.

Never one to sit idle, Nobu’s documentary film SHORT ROUND UP premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival earlier this summer. The film follows Nobu’s search for the Asian men who, like him, auditioned to be “Short Round” in Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom, their first shot at becoming Hollywood Stars. Nobu has also appeared as a series regular in the cult-hit TV show and films Trailer Park Boys, co-created and starred in forty episodes of the gonzo cooking/gadget creation show Food Jammers seen on the Food Network and Cooking Channel, and travelled in the US in a short-bus powered by vegetable oil meeting innovators of green science for Invention Nation on Discovery Science USA

Nobu started out as a writer on Canadian episodic television (Emily of New Moon, Cold Squad), and then co-hosted, with his brother, a couple of national Canadian TV shows (Smart Ask!, ZeD), and acted as a pop culture reporter (>Play). In the late 90s he co-founded and played in the Halifax rock band Rick Of The Skins (ROTS), and in the early 2000s he released his first solo album as Mister Nobu titled C’mon Wid Your C’mon.

Today, Luka Kuplowsky is sharing another new track from his upcoming EP of covers from some of Kuplowsky’s deepest influences titled Judee Justin Arthur Mary, out April 24 via Next Door Records. “Me For Real” “holds Arthur Russell’s lyrical mantra: ‘Do What I Want’,” says Kuplowsky. “Discovering his music in the past ten years has provided such insight into the freedoms of songwriting. Our tribute is in doing what we want, while retaining Arthur’s impulse to be equally harmonious and disruptive.”

For the new EP, Luka Kuplowsky (voice, guitar, harmonica) brought together a cast of some of his most familiar Toronto players including U.S. Girls and Andy Shauf collaborator Evan Cartwright on drums, Thom Gill (Sam Amidon, Bernice) on electric guitar and organ, the incredible jazz player Josh Cole (Sandro Perri, Martha Wainwright), on bass, and Bahamas’ Felicity Williams for backing vocals. Together, they’ve taken these songs and re-imagined what they could look like in a truly collaborative process to extract something new from each composition. Although it may seem like an EP of covers on first blush, this collection is a reverent take with the distinct fingerprints of each of the collaborators throughout.

Taking Russell’s funky deconstructed pop song “Me For Real” and rendering it into a skipping, syncopated folk song; Judee Sill’s country-gospel anthem “There’s a Rugged Road” is opened up into a grooving, pastoral jam (think Bill Frisell’s “Gone, Just Like the Train”); Justin Haynes’ sincere and sardonic “Child Support” is imagined as ramshackle tropicalia; and Mary Margaret O’Hara’s “Anew Day” is paired down to a minimalist gospel-blues for guitar, bass and hand clap.

Kuplowsky says of the EP:

Judee Justin Arthur Mary is a collection of songs by artists that are deeply meaningful to me. They are songs that my friends and I honed as The Holy Oak Family Singers - a tribute band moniker named after our formative community space Holy Oak Cafe (2009-2017).

It is a true pleasure to briefly live inside the songs of Arthur Russell, Judee Sill, Justin Haynes, and Mary Margaret O’Hara. Our tribute to them is to find our own centre and footing through their gifts of words and music.

Here are some half-remembered takes on some of the deepest songwriters I know.”

Recently, Kuplowsky shared a video of his performance of “Anew Day” with the Holy Oak Family Singers at The Tranzac Club (Southern Cross Lounge) from February 2020 as part of a fundraiser to keep the venue open. With his tour date plans on hold, Kuplowsky will be performing as part of a weekly live stream called the Holy Oak Family Variety Hour in an effort to continue to fundraise for the venue.
