Pantayo explores what’s possible for contemporary kulintang music with the atonal blend of kulintang ensemble instruments with vocals and electronic production. Today, they share the second single off their upcoming self-titled debut, “V V V (They Lie)”.

“We wrote ‘V V V (They Lie)’ in a day,” the band says. “We were having bubble tea at that time and the song just came together intuitively. The composition of the song was a lot like a cup of bubble tea. We added 2 cups of blended percussion as the base, then some analog synth tapioca pearls to keep the texture interesting and fun, and finally topped it off with a few tablespoons of fresh tropical vocal fruits for some added sweetness.”

The album features eight diverse songs speaking to Pantayo’s musical influences as queer diasporic Filipinas. Produced by Yamantaka // Sonic Titan’s alaska B, Pantayo was written and recorded from 2016-2019 in Toronto.

Pantayo is an audio diary of how the ensemble has grown together as writers and performers. The songwriting process started with members workshopping and performing traditional kulintang pieces from the Southern Philippines, often instrument-switching on the kulintang, agongs, sarunays, gandingan, bandir, and dabak. Adapting kick drums and synths to the modal tuning of the gongs further expanded Pantayo’s ability to incorporate modern musical expressions such as punk and R&B. “If you listen to the recordings of our rehearsals and songwriting sessions, you can hear us deconstructing the kulintang parts section-by-section and practicing our songs in different styles” says keyboardist and vocalist Eirene Cloma. “You can also hear how close we’ve gotten and how our creative workflow strengthened over the years.”

Grounded in the interpretation of kulintang music, Pantayo can be a vehicle for discussions around diasporic Filipino identity. All five members have different experiences of settling in Canada and with that comes their relationships with music. Kat Estacio, co-founder of Pantayo, says “One way that we can make this world feel like home for folks like us is to mix the kulintang music that we learned with different sounds and song structures that feel familiar to us."

Pantayo's self-titled record will be released on May 8, 2020 via Telephone Explosion Records.

Steven Wilson’s forthcoming sixth album has been postponed due to issues arising from the current Coronavirus situation. Originally due for release on June 12, 2020, The Future Bites will now be released on January 29, 2021, via Arts & Crafts.

“As with many of my albums, The Future Bites is not just about the music, it's a high concept project which involves design, artwork, video and a tour production, all on a grander scale than anything I've attempted before,” says Wilson. “However, due to the pandemic, there are unprecedented challenges, ranging from manufacturing issues (particularly in relation to the elaborate deluxe edition) and the uncertainty facing record stores as the coronavirus forces them to close their doors, to being unable to shoot most of the video material I planned. It's therefore with a very heavy heart that I reluctantly need to postpone the release of The Future Bites until such time everything can happen as intended. This will now be January next year, with new music and video starting to be issued again around October. In the meantime the pre-order page for the various editions of the album will remain online. Myself, management, agent and promoters are monitoring the situation regarding the live shows scheduled for this autumn. Should events change we will let everyone know as soon as we do.

I understand that this may be disappointing news, and to no one more that myself, believe me.  I worked on the music and background of this project for the last two years and was thrilled to finally be able to launch it. The response to the ‘Personal Shopper’ track released last month has been phenomenal, and I was looking forward to unveiling more over the next few months in the build up to the release of the album. But alas due to the current circumstances it was not to be.

I sincerely send everyone reading this a message of good health, and I hope that one day in the not too distant future we can once again focus on things like music, which even if it isn't strictly essential seems to somehow makes life more worthwhile. SW x”

“Personal Shopper”, the first track from The Future Bites - the ten-minute long Moroder-esque tour de force - was released in March.

With Luka Kuplowsky’s new EP, Judee Justin Arthur Mary, out this Friday, the Toronto songwriter is sharing another track from the EP, his cover of Judee Sill’s “There’s A Rugged Road”. “The first time I played with Thom Gill and Josh Cole it was at the Holy Oak Cafe playing this song,” says Kuplowsky. “Judee’s perfect song offered a musical space to converse with two artists who are now deeply inspirational collaborators. The song itself is incredibly visual and offers a rich harmonic path. We decided to tread softly and soulfully.”

For the new EP, out April 24 on Next Door Records, Luka Kuplowsky (voice, guitar, harmonica) brought together a cast of some of his most familiar Toronto players including U.S. Girls and Andy Shauf collaborator Evan Cartwright on drums, Thom Gill (Sam Amidon, Bernice) on electric guitar and organ, the incredible jazz player Josh Cole (Sandro Perri, Martha Wainwright) on bass, and Bahamas’ Felicity Williams for backing vocals. Together, they’ve taken these songs and re-imagined what they could look like in a truly collaborative process to extract something new from each composition. Although it may seem like an EP of covers on first blush, this collection is a reverent take with the distinct fingerprints of each of the collaborators throughout.

Taking Russell’s funky deconstructed pop song “Me For Real” and rendering it into a skipping, syncopated folk song; Judee Sill’s country-gospel anthem “There’s a Rugged Road” is opened up into a grooving, pastoral jam (think Bill Frisell’s “Gone, Just Like the Train”); Justin Haynes’ sincere and sardonic “Child Support” is imagined as ramshackle tropicalia; and Mary Margaret O’Hara’s “Anew Day” is paired down to a minimalist gospel-blues for guitar, bass and hand clap.

Kuplowsky says of the EP:
Judee Justin Arthur Mary is a collection of songs by artists that are deeply meaningful to me. They are songs that my friends and I honed as The Holy Oak Family Singers - a tribute band moniker named after our formative community space Holy Oak Cafe (2009-2017).

It is a true pleasure to briefly live inside the songs of Arthur Russell, Judee Sill, Justin Haynes, and Mary Margaret O’Hara. Our tribute to them is to find our own centre and footing through their gifts of words and music.

Here are some half-remembered takes on some of the deepest songwriters I know.”

Recently, Kuplowsky shared a video of his performance of “Anew Day” with the Holy Oak Family Singers at The Tranzac Club (Southern Cross Lounge) from February 2020 as part of a fundraiser to keep the venue open. With his tour date plans on hold, Kuplowsky will be performing as part of a weekly live stream called the Holy Oak Family Variety Hour in an effort to continue to fundraise for the venue.
