Today, Toronto’s Jaunt are sharing the new live video for “Delighted To Be Spoken To” from their debut LP, All In One. “We’re happy to have this video out for the masses, seeing as we had to cancel our planned tour due to the pandemic, we figured this is the next best thing,” says guitarist Pat O’Brien. “The production of this video was very much a DIY effort and was shot by the very talented team of Pia Perez and Sylvain Chaussée of Tranquilo.

I learned how to paint a large floor in under two hours, so I’m thankful you can now enjoy the fruits of my labour.”

Recorded over three years and engineered in collaboration with Alex Sowinski (BADBADNOTGOOD), this collection serves as a travelogue for the band’s growth. All In One celebrates connection, creativity, and adaptation all passed through the lens of desktop pop sensibilities and an endearingly adventurous spirit. Equal parts experimental and infectiously raw, faintly electric and distinctly exposed, the cornucopia of styles and sounds presented in All In One finds itself glued together by a palpable and unique sense of understanding and friendship.

A trip down memory lane might credit Jaunt’s beginnings to an elixir of coincidence and surrendering to try something new. Pat O’Brien, now the band’s guitarist, met future lead singer and songwriter Tom Helliwell at a Halloween party, striking a friendship that manifested across a few years of jams and shared musical creations. Somewhere along the way, Pat booked a show out of the blue, the band released their first EP, Chat, and Jaunt had graduated from a digital manifest of closeted collaborations to something tangible. Keyboardist Daniel Reardon entered the fold for the band’s first performance, followed closely by the addition of drummer Duncan Hood and bassist Nick Nausbaum.

Jaunt’s artistic palette, social circle, and resume developed quickly and organically, alongside their time active in the Toronto music scene. Duncan’s friendship and collaborations with Alex Sowinski intersected with Nick’s ties to the Montreal ecosystem that produced breakouts like Homeshake and Yves Jarvis; this further fostered creative community and opportunities to tour and record on top of groundwork already established by Pat and Tom. Duncan and Nick began performing with Charlotte Day Wilson as her backing band and would cross paths with vocalist and video artist Caitlin Woelfe-O’Brien playing similar venues. A friendship was sparked, Caitlin contributed her voice to coloring the band’s second EP, Cue, and now is a full-time member of the group. By this time, Jaunt had become a well-oiled machine: a synergetic sextet fueled by earnest ambition and artistic momentum.

The band’s origin story is the genesis for what would become their full-length debut. In name, All In One, evokes wholeness while feeling vast, a testament to the record’s breadth of musical directions and underlying cohesiveness. Thematically, it’s an homage to changes and evolution experienced by Jaunt on both an individual and collective scale throughout the album’s creation.  The unpredictable variables in the bandmate’s lives – new jobs, partners, successes, failures, Tom moving to Hawaii for love – all provided a backdrop and clear pathos as they developed a consistent collection of works. Some songs on the album are more recently recorded; others were pocketed for future use. The goal and meaning of All In One was always on the horizon as Jaunt navigated unwaveringly toward it.

Busty and the Bass have officially signed to indie record label, Arts & Crafts, home to Broken Social Scene, Andy Shauf, Liza Anne, and more. Since signing they have released three tracks, “Clouds”, “Summer”, and “Baggy Eyed Dopeman (ft. George Clinton)”, produced by Neal Pogue, who has recently worked on numerous iterations of modern funk and jazz [Tyler The Creator, DRAM, KAYTRANADA, Anderson .Paak]. The octet, Nick Ferraro [vocals, alto sax], Evan Crofton a.k.a. Alistair Blu [vocals, keys, synths], Scott Bevins [trumpet], Chris Vincent [trombone], Louis Stein [guitar], Milo Johnson [bass], Eric Haynes [keys, piano], and Julian Trivers [drums]—score nostalgic lyrical ruminations with a soundscape of simmering soul, fiery funk, spirited rock, hypnotic hip-hop, and artful R&B.

The multinational band met during their first week as students in the jazz program at McGill University back in 2011. Beginning as an instrumental act, they capitalized on any and every gig they could, taking $100 for a three-hour set or exchanging tunes for wine and hors d’oeuvres at a cocktail party. They went on to drop a pair of EPs—GLAM [2015] and LIFT [2016]—before unveiling 2017’s full-length debut, Uncommon Good. In addition to packing houses on headline tours, they graced the stages of international festivals such as Made in America, Osheaga, Pinkpop, Montreal International Jazz Festival, The Great Escape, Ottawa Bluesfest, and Rifflandia, playing alongside the likes of Radiohead, Anderson .Paak, and Lana Del Rey.

“Jehnny Beth is like a work of fiction. If you could draw her from scratch, you would not wish to alter a single stroke of her shape as a character. When she plays live, she walks out into the crowd across a sea of outstretched hands (Google it!) and she looks like my Joan of Arc. She talks about her love of moshpits, dangerous sex (in her lyrics, and a new book of short stories) and of emancipation.” – Mary Anne Hobbs, Grazia

Says Jehnny Beth about the track, “When I think of this song, I think of Romy from the xx strangling my neck with her hands in the studio. She was trying to get me out of my shell lyrically, and there was so much resistance in me she lost her patience. The song was originally called ‘Heroism’, but I wasn’t happy because it was too generic. Flood was the first one to suggest to say ‘Heroine’ instead of ‘Heroism’. Then I remember Johnny Hostile late at night in my hotel room in London saying ‘I don’t understand who you are singing about. Who is the Heroine? You ARE the Heroine’. The next morning, I arrived early in the studio and recorded my vocals adding ‘to be’ to the chorus line: ‘all I want is TO BE a heroine’. Flood entered the studio at that moment and jumped in the air giving me the thumbs up through the window. I guess I’m telling this story because sometimes we look around for role models, and examples to follow, without realising that the answer can be hidden inside of us. I was afraid to be the Heroine of the song, but it took all the people around me to get me there.”

Additionally, the second episode of Jehnny Beth’s music TV show on Arte, entitled Echoes with Jehnny Beth, is available worldwide now, and features performances and interviews with King Krule, Beak> (Portishead’s Geoff Barrow), and Nilufer Yanya.

Jehnny Beth’s brilliant debut solo album, To Love Is To Live, was recorded in Los Angeles, London, and Paris, and features a number of collaborators, including producers Flood, Atticus Ross, and longtime co-creator Johnny Hostile. It also features guest turns from The xx’s Romy Madley Croft, actor Cillian Murphy, and IDLES’ Joe Talbot.

Jehnny Beth spoke with the New York Times in February about the genesis of To Love Is To Live; click HERE to read it.

In addition to releasing To Love Is To Live this June, Jehnny Beth will also be releasing Crimes Against Love Memories (C.A.L.M.), her first book featuring a collection of her erotic short stories along with photography from Johnny Hostile, in July 2020 via White Rabbit. The book is a collaboration with longtime creative partner Johnny Hostile, whose photographs punctuate Jehnny Beth’s stories. C.A.L.M. looks set to establish Jehnny Beth and Johnny Hostile as two of the bravest and most provocative voices in fiction and erotic art today.

Best known as the charismatic lead singer and co-writer of UK band Savages, who received Mercury Prize nominations for both of their now-classic two albums Silence Yourself (2013) and Adore Life (2016), Jehnny Beth’s voice, lyrical perspective, and incredible live performances have captivated audiences since the early Aughts. But it’s in To Love Is To Live that Jehnny Beth truly steps into - and claims - the spotlight. The album is a sonic tour de force, a dark cinematic meditation on the strange business of being alive. Throughout the record, she explores the deepest reaches of her creative consciousness...wrapped in a whirlwind of sounds.  Indeed, in accessing those darkest and least comfortable parts of herself, Jehnny Beth has created a piece of work that is stunningly cathartic, fiercely abrasive, delicately exposed, and rich for discourse.
