Bombay Bicycle Club are very pleased to unveil details of a brand new EP, Two Lives. The four track EP is out July 24 via Arts & Crafts, and features three acoustic reworkings of songs from the band’s recently acclaimed Everything Else Has Gone Wrong LP, released in January, and a cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “Two Lives”. The stripped-back versions were mostly recorded at vocalist Jack Steadman’s home studio during lockdown, and took on a real back-to-basics, DIY approach to the recording and production process.

The new EP will feature versions of “Racing Stripes”, “Is It Real”, “Let You Go”, and “Two Lives”. The first track to be lifted from the acoustic EP, “Let You Go”, is streaming today with a new stop motion animation video.

Discussing the process of making the new EP, Jack explained: “Recording this EP at home meant going back to basics and recording just like I used to growing up. It brought back a lot of funny memories of making DIY shakers out of rice and tupperware, and mic shields out of coat hangers and stockings.

“It was great to record ‘Let You Go’ in a stripped back way for it, letting the song shine through without any fancy production. That minimalism combines with the rough around the edges recording - chair squeaks and all - to give you a more intimate experience.”

Two Lives will be made available to download on a ‘pay-what-you-want’ basis from the band’s website, with all proceeds going to two organisations:

Chineke! (https://www.chineke.org/) creates opportunities for established Black and minority ethnic musicians, nurtures new talent by providing role models, and celebrates diversity in classical music.

Youth Music (https://www.youthmusic.org.uk/) invests in music programs for young people in deprived areas, building confidence, resilience and self-esteem.

Bombay Bicycle Club recently shared a Spotify Singles release, including their spell-binding cover of Selena Gomez’s “Lose You To Love Me”. Joined by long standing collaborator Rae Morris to share vocals on the cover, the band also recorded a complete reimagining of recent single “I Can Hardly Speak” at London’s Abbey Road Studios. Listen to both recordings here:   https://bombaybicycleclub.lnk.to/SpotifySessionsSo

Like so many artists right across the globe, Bombay Bicycle Club were preparing themselves for a huge summer of festival performances, including headline slots at All Points East and Truck Festival, before the Coronavirus put paid to those plans before they’d even started.

The band’s new album, Everything Else Has Gone Wrong, marked an explosive comeback at the start of the year following several years hiatus.

JEHNNY BETH SHARES NEW SHORT FILM, DEBUT SOLO ALBUM OUT TODAY

DEBUT SOLO ALBUM, TO LOVE IS TO LIVE, OUT TODAY VIA ARTS & CRAFTS

BUY / STREAM TO LOVE IS TO LIVE HERE

"Beth’s debut solo album, To Love Is To Live, is a cathartic blast of beauty and darkness that exemplifies everything you would expect from this dynamic visionary." - Northern Transmissions

“...fuelled by an invigorating conviction and helmed by an artist with the gravitational pull to make it all align.” Exclaim!

“Jehnny Beth is like a work of fiction. If you could draw her from scratch, you would not wish to alter a single stroke of her shape as a character. When she plays live, she walks out into the crowd across a sea of outstretched hands (Google it!) and she looks like my Joan of Arc. She talks about her love of moshpits, dangerous sex (in her lyrics, and a new book of short stories) and of emancipation.” – Mary Anne Hobbs, Grazia

Today, songwriter, singer, and author Jehnny Beth releases her debut solo album, a sonic tour de force entitled To Love Is To Live. The record was recorded in Los Angeles, London, and Paris, and features a number of collaborators, including producers Flood, Atticus Ross, and longtime co-creator Johnny Hostile. It also features guest turns from The xx’s Romy Madley Croft, actor Cillian Murphy, and IDLES’ Joe Talbot.

The album’s release comes with a short film by acclaimed creative studio Hingston Studio, who also collaborated with Jehnny Beth on the record’s powerful cover art, for the song “We Will Sin Together”.

“We Will Sin Together” is a music video as film; high-art pop seamlessly blending sound and vision.  Focused on an intimate encounter of male and female alter egos exploring pleasure, power and transformation, the film also features religious and mythological iconography throughout. Over five individual scenes, subtle references to specific moments in Catholic, Roman and Greek narratives are made – the Virgin Mary; Cupid and Psyche; Pluto and Proserpina; Michael and Lucifer; and Satyr and Hermaphroditus.  The short film combines 3D capture of Jehnny Beth taken from the original album photo session by Hingston Studio, alongside motion capture shot in early March.

“The embodiment of different voices, and this whole notion of embracing the masculine and feminine characteristics of identity was the main starting point for us,” explains creative director Tom Hingston, who has previously worked with David Bowie, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Grace Jones, and more. “The record has an attitude and a driving intent – there is a rawness from her lyrics and the production which doesn’t sound like anything you’ve heard before.”

PRAISE FOR TO LOVE IS TO LIVE

"To Love Is to Live is an eerie, almost cinematic experience...[Jehnny] has continued to evolve into a multi-hyphenate talent." - New York Times

"...if “Flower” is any indication, her upcoming solo LP, To Love Is to Live, will be a dusky, expressionistic affair — the kind, like with “Flower,” that begs you to keep listening. And if it’s like “Flower,” it’ll be worth it." - Rolling Stone

“’To Love Is To Live’ is an in your face experience…Jehnny Beth has an undeniable power.” – MOJO

“It’s impossible not to be in awe of Jehnny Beth.” - Gigwise

“Beth immersed listeners in a world that felt dystopian but ultimately encouraged escapism.” - Evening Standard

“Experimental and provocative.” - Crack Magazine

“‘To Love Is To Live’ is broad, spanning industrial noise, dissonant jazz and eerie ballardry.” - Guardian

“Gothic pop, electronic ambience and haunting ballardry.” - Q

"...an industrial post-punk track that is equal parts enveloping and off-putting. “I’m The Man” is heavy, shocking, and very, very exciting." - UPROXX

"Sonically, we’re in visceral, industrial punk territory, with a little piano interlude to let you catch your breath." - Brooklyn Vegan

"["Flower"] is spare yet tense, trembling with a film noir anxiousness...It’s anthemic and, as usual, it draws immediate comparisons to Siouxsie Sioux’s trademark intensity." - Paste Magazine

"“Heroine”, brings a more melodic air to the affair...the Savages singer hasn’t taken her foot off the post-punk pedal for this one — not at all. But with warped jazz horns and undulating baking vocals swirling together over propellant drums, there’s a more hypnotic thrust here." - Consequence of Sound

"["Flower"] builds from a slow-creeping pulse to a rippling, serrated electronic rock track that wrings its power from tension and release." - Stereogum

"“Flower” is a hauntingly seductive piece." - Aupium

"Cacophony and bravado briefly give way to tenderness in “I’m the Man,” a solo blast from Jehnny Beth of Savages. Drums slam hard, stopping and starting, and electronics screech and sputter and blare, hurtling ahead as Beth channels male arrogance. But there are second thoughts: The beat vanishes, hazy keyboard chords waft up, and Beth turns to crooning...But that’s only temporary, perhaps too vulnerable; at the end, the noisy armor comes crashing back." - The New York Times

“The haunt of the original cut is deepened with echo and string-like synths, giving Whoop-Szo’s plaintive strum and wistful keys a headier feel.” - CBC MUSIC (on Zoon’s Remix of “Cut Your Hair”)

“Warrior Down takes you for a sonic hike — sometimes through the wilderness, sometimes through a wasteland — never staying long in one spot or indicating the next direction. With long instrumentals that dance between chaos and calm, it's a subconscious assault on the emotions.” - Exclaim!

“Warrior Down is a perfectly paced and arranged set of songs and instrumental interludes, each a movement in its own right but ultimately in service to the record’s overarching theme.” - Dominionated (#1 Album of 2019)

“Whoop-Szo released its powerful new album, Warrior Down, at the end of 2019, giving us an impossible-to-categorize, rock-psych-sometimes-folk set of 10 songs that draw on vocalist and lyricist Adam Sturgeon's experience as an Anishinaabe-Canadian, writing about the intergenerational trauma within his family and his Anishinaabe community" - CBC Music

“Sitting at the meeting point of sludgy post-metal, and jagged folk-punk, WHOOP-SZO craft melodies that perform the dual function of encouraging your rapt attention, and effectively melting into.” - Beatroute

Recently, WHOOP-Szo announced their upcoming EP of remixes of their acclaimed new album, Warrior Down, featuring alterations by Zoon, DOOMSQUAD, Ice Cream, AG47 (nêhiyawak), and more. Today, the band are sharing the visual album by director Travis Welowszky for the remix EP. “For this remix project, Travis delves deeper into our personal 8mm archive and stitches together over 25 minutes of visual stimulation to compliment these thoughtful song alterations,” says Adam Sturgeon.

Warrior Down Remix EP will be available to buy and stream on all platforms June 12, here.

“Warrior Down was a record that was a long time coming. At times it felt like nobody would touch the finished album,” says Sturgeon. “‘It’s too heavy’ from the indies and ‘It’s not heavy enough’ from the metalheads. We’ve never really played into either of those narratives and so when the pandemic hit we decided to switch gears entirely. We had already been working and reworking a version of our song ‘Cut Your Hair’ and were craving some interaction from our space of self-quarantine after cancelling well over 50 shows. We decided to reach out to contemporaries who also do their ‘own thing’ in the electronic world and before we knew it we had an EP’s worth of Warrior Down alterations. Each song provides a new take on songs from Warrior Down, but also covers a wide range of electronic subgenres in the process.”

100% of sales from the EP will be donated to LIFE*SPIN, a London, ON based charity. The money will be directed towards their community food box program, which was launched in response to COVID-19. Many people depend on food banks, breakfast programs, and other initiatives to feed themselves and their families, and when these suddenly closed due to COVID regulations, there was an increase in food insecurity. So, LIFE*SPIN partnered with a couple other local organizations to deliver free food boxes, supporting fixed income families, seniors, and expectant mothers with direct access to food while supporting the livelihood of local businesses.

MORE ABOUT WHOOP-SZO

Listed as one of The Most Underrated Albums of 2019 by Exclaim!, Warrior Down presents a vast and barren landscape associated with the harsh truth of Canadian History, a post-colonial firestorm harbouring moments of doom and heavy introspection while remaining true to their psychedelic aesthetic.

WHOOP-Szo is a force of nature, sprung from a mixed-blooded experience of Canadian history with deep Anishinaabek roots. Thunderous and ground-breaking, harmonious and generative—a WHOOP-Szo show envelops audiences in an emotional weather-storm that dances conscientiously between anger and discipline, frustration and hope. They tell us about colonial injustice loudly and punishingly, with haunting chord changes and monolithic distortion. They explore the possibility of wisdom and empowerment, with acoustic melodies that calmly find space within crushing layers of politics and sound. On stage and off, WHOOP-Szo engage communities with a powerful synchrony that invites people to feel and to heal. They are passionate storytellers who knock loudly on the door, and will reward you tenfold for letting them in.

Warrior Down harnesses their power into a concise, focused 35 minutes on wax, calling out both specific instances of injustice in Canadian history — as we see in “Gerry”, or recalling Sturgeon’s grandfather’s experience at a Residential School (“Gerry”, “Cut Your Hair”) — and broader, wider-reaching ones such as the experience of having race and culture assigned to you by a government that doesn’t represent you (“6.1/6.2”).
