Today Satellite and The Harpoonist are sharing the music video for the title track of their upcoming debut EP, Satellite Man. “Jonas Shandel and I set out to write the story of a reclusive guy living out a careless vision of a dream via his TV set, and the inevitable jonesing that one experiences going down that path,” says singer Shawn Hall.. “When Bradford Reed showed up to the recording session from NYC, he encouraged all the players to channel Bobbie Gentry’s approach to the song (sleepy & dusty). As the session went on, It ended up sounding more and more like ‘War’s version of Ode to Billy Joe, or Harry Nilsson’s Lime in the Coconut. Either way, someone was spending a great deal of time cocktailing with Sammy Davis Jr.”

As the great poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once stated, “The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain.” And so, in January 2020, as the city’s longest spell of precipitation in over five decades threatened to wash Vancouver into the Pacific, four musicians from disparate sonic territories did just that. Not that they had a say in the matter, they let it rain while gathering at Afterlife Studios to conduct an experiment as radical and historic as the weather outside.

Shawn Hall of the acclaimed maverick blues duo The Harpoonist and The Axe Murderer was the progenitor, his notion being to assemble three talented friends with whom he had previously worked, yet that had never met each other. Then, during an intense three-day exploration of alchemic creative collaboration within a self-imposed pressure cooker environment, they would record a 6-song EP – all under the gaze of a film crew. So, as the rain smashed down on the City of Glass, Satellite and The Harpoonist was birthed, with every labour pain and its exhausting entry into the world captured on celluloid.

Joining singer/harmonicist Hall in this extraordinary project – his “people that want to play in the sandbox” – are Geoff Hillhorst (Hammond organ/piano/synthesizers) of award-winning alt-country-folk dreamers, The Deep Dark Woods; Theo Vincent (percussion/congas/vocals) from Vancouver’s funk-soul powerhouse The Boom Booms, and on drums and Pencilina, Brooklyn’s Bradford Reed, of out-there art-rockers, King Missile III. The Pencilina, an incredible double-necked zither-like contraption, is Reed’s own one-off invention, making Satellite and The Harpoonist the world’s only band to feature it.

“Keep Kicking” Video Still

Today, Sameer Cash is sharing the new live video for recent single, “Keep Kicking”, filmed live at the Burdock in Toronto on March 12, before the country came to a screeching halt. Walking in to soundcheck, I had forgotten how it all felt,” says Cash. “How I had missed the stress and the laughter and the pride of actually getting it together — we did it, this might not suck! This was to be my first proper show back in years — a reintroduction of myself to the people I had met in and out of music the past 10 years. It was to be an intimate show in a small venue, packed with family and friends, with a new band, and a renewed faith in myself and my artistic vision.”

Underneath the nervous energy, was a more sobering one, one that skated through the whole evening, weaving in and out of the music and the crowd. Half of my bandmates had just found out all their summer tours had been cancelled, and by Monday, the other half would learn the same thing.

It was hard to really understand what was happening — at that point we had been told that maybe by the weekend we would all be told to limit gatherings to less than 250 — that didn’t sound too bad. My bartending jobs would tuck under that number, we could all still make it in small clubs, we had a fighting chance. Of course, by Monday, we were living in some sort of dystopian fantasy.

With the rest of the world tucked under their covers endlessly scanning the news, we were present for the shift in real life, minute by minute. It all seemed so surreal, it was hard to relate to. Hard not to joke about. That night, we were all living in the active transition from one world to the next, we could feel it, it felt so close, yet so large and so out of reach.

The band was new, and most of them I had never played with. I myself hadn’t played a proper show in years, save for a few solo opening slots and a few pickup bar gigs — and the longer I left the instruments in cases, the harder it was to open them back up. I booked the Burdock show before I had even put a band together. I was worried that I had lost an integral part of my identity, that thing inside of you that pushes you forward no matter how much you stumble. But inevitably, I learned, that thing never goes away, it just grows and evolves, shifting your will from the inside. It was nice to feel it again, however fleeting.

Looking forward to playing more shows, but that is a far off dream at this point. In the meantime, this video can serve as a reminder to what it used to be, and how it could be again.”

Recently, Cash also shared “Driveway Moment”, the first single since his rebirth as a solo artist. Both “Driveway Moment” and “Keep Kicking” were produced by Matthew Bailey, engineered by Chris Stringer (Timber Timbre), mixed by D James Goodwin (Kevin Morby, Craig Finn), and mastered by Philip Bova Shaw (Feist, Andy Shauf).

On “Driveway Moment” Cash says, "Driveway moments are the small glimpses between the big adventures. They are the moments that I have lived in most of my life. Those are the times where you really grow and learn. When you’re not thinking so much, but merely existing, and feeling the weight of everything in front of you, and all the things you’ve left behind."

Sameer Cash was raised on a diet of Rock & Roll records and Hindu fairy tales. His father, born to a large family in the deep suburbs of Scarborough Ontario, spent years shedding his catholic upbringing for the ungovernable religion of 1980’s post-punk. Cash’s mother, born among the mango trees of Kenya, by way of India, clung to her own upbringing through childhood memories and her mother’s cooking, seeking comfort and closure through many Canadian Prairie winters.

Braids are also releasing today the official video for the opening track “Here 4 U”. They share the inspiration behind the song : “Here 4 U is an oldie in our books. The original demo dates back four or five years, written while Austin and I spent a few months snowbirding in Los Angeles. It was one of the first songs we wrote for Shadow Offering, but the last we finished. We nearly lost this one on the cutting room floor, but in finding the album’s identity in the final weeks of mixing, so too did this song. In a way, it encapsulates the process of making this record – bursts of excitement and exploration, stretches of self-doubt, long days, long months, and the blissful self-discovery of finding our voice for this album.

Here 4 U is a song about love, about a fleeting relationship, about the aftermath, and about the desire to be there for someone in a new light. “The fear of love, the fear of what it means to give, and what it takes, to protect it.” It’s the swirling thoughts as love falls apart, and the pillars to hold on to throughout.”

Praises for “Shadow Offering”

The music – lush electronic textures, delicate piano melodies and driving rhythms – is cinematic in scope, offering Armageddon and salvation in turn. 8/10– Uncut

"‘Shadow Offering,’ is beautiful and heart wrenching, pulling on listeners’ heartstrings. The album offers a sanctuary by easing anxiety and fueling hope, acting as a sort of security blanket for these unnerving times. 8/10”  - Clash Magazine

“a gloriously intricate fourth outing [...] Braids have refined themselves, ready to offer mature, emotional soundscapes of understanding. 9/10” - The Line of Best Fit

“Braids are incisive, and conjure up a kind of confiding emotional warmth; Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla’s rich production is the ideal match.” - NME

“…[Shadow Offering] feels like the culmination of what Braids have been building towards over the last 10 years. It’s glimmering and assured, an album that’s constantly refining and one-upping itself. The Canadian band’s songs have always been massive, bursting at the seams with ideas, but they’ve never sounded as good or as crystallized as they do on Shadow Offering.”  - Stereogum (50 best albums of 2020 so far)

“Raphaelle Standell-Preston sings with openhearted earnestness.” - The New York Times

“The whole thing builds to a frantic final third in which the chaos and confusion is palpable." - The Fader (About “Snow Angel”)

"a bouncy good time; in the tug-of-war between mind and matter, these pulsing synths are clearly on the side of the body." - Consequence of Sound (About “Young Buck”)

“An undulating piano carries heartfelt sentiments, presented in a voice that stylistically manages to pay tribute to both Joni Mitchell and Alanis Morissette.”  –  The Globe and Mail (About Eclipse (Ashley)

“Just Let Me” and “Snow Angel” part of Under the Radar’s Best Songs of the week

The album finds the band at their most personal, unabashedly flexing a new sense of confidence through songs that reach a higher level of artistry and collaboration. A luscious and expansive release, Shadow Offering leads us through a sonic tapestry of narrative. With heartbreaking honesty and precision, listeners traverse a nuanced and complicated world: one full of beautiful contradictions. Although the album directs itself at the failures of people to love and be loved, it also seeks to restore justice and attain blissful union. It's arc crests through the dark towards the light and learns how to dance with the dizzying rhythms of the heart. The songs bubble, sustain, dissolve, expand, and retract.
