“Drawing on dub-oriented grooves and flashes of serrated post-punk guitar stutters, there’s an exchange of wiry and rhythmic, which works to console the tension of political and social commentary, deliberately setting the tone for you to get up and move.”- Julijana Capone, Beatroute Magazine

Figure Walking is drummer Rob Gardiner (Conduct, Pip Skid) and Canadian independent music stalwart Greg MacPherson (baritone guitar, vocals, keys). Based in Winnipeg, minutes from the geographic centre of North America, Figure Walking makes music that is at once unmistakably local (fighting through the isolation and limitations of what is essentially a mixed up, outpost town) and reflective of the complex lives being lived beyond the horizon.

Today, the band is sharing the first new track off their upcoming LP, Vertical / Horizontal. About “Last Dollar (Green July)” MacPherson says : "Whether it's a fresh new pandemic cooked up by some dead-in-the-eyes STEM worker or it's thousands of aging atomic weapons hidden in fields off the I-29, it seems sometimes that our civilization is getting good at being awful. ‘Last Dollar’ is a song about Winnipeg this summer, it's about being happy and in love, making out and smoking menthols over a giant pile of fireworks on the hottest day of July. Recorded in Montreal and Winnipeg, the band’s second album, Vertical/Horizontal paints a colourful portrait of a beautiful world spiraling through the heartache and mystery of late stage capitalism. As ever, MacPherson’s storytelling pulls the curtain back and offers an up-to-the-minute report; characters fighting the law, crossing the Canadian border into North Dakota, born on a holiday, living with tragedy and winning in style. Vertical/Horizontal will be released by Disintegration Records on September 11, 2020.

Vertical/Horizontal marks MacPherson’s tenth studio album as lead and principal songwriter, and fourth collaborating with Gardiner. Figure Walking has shared bills with a wide range of artists, from Mike Watt + The Missingmen to the Hold Steady, Father John Misty to The Beaches. This music is anchored by MacPherson’s underrated guitar playing and trademark universality but it is Gardiner’s physicality and post rock sensibility that give Figure Walking an uncommon musical aesthetic. Figure Walking’s previous record, The Big Other, was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize.

BROS. LANDRETH COLLABORATE WITH ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET FOR NEW VIDEO

NEW VIDEO FROM BROS. LANDRETH AND ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET FEATURES NEW CHOREOGRAPHER EXPLORING FEELINGS OF ISOLATION AND LONELINESS

Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) and The Bros. Landreth have once again joined forces to create an all new video performance. The video for The Bros. “Where Were We” from their 2015 JUNO Award winning debut album Let It Lie, features brand new choreography exploring feelings of loneliness and isolation brought on by social distancing guidelines brought on to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Inspiration for the project came from RWB Second Soloist Liam Caines, who sought to interpret the feelings of loss and separation that many experienced after the Manitoba Provincial Government declared a state of emergency on March 20, 2020. Caines and other RWB Company dancers created the movements seen on the video which they hope will inspire others dealing with isolation while they practice social distancing.

“As dancers, we express ourselves through movement,” says Caines. “We tried to capture what it was like for us in that moment and empathize with those who were going through the same thing. It’s easy to forget we don’t fight this by ourselves, and this video is our way of reaching out to say we are there with you.”

“When I finally saw the rough cut, I was blown away,” says Dave Landreth. “The choreography speaks through these really simple, everyday movements. Each dancer’s ability to bridge the space between them is a real testament to their spirit. It was incredible to see.”

While “Where Were We,” is found on the Let It Lie LP, the video features an entirely new recording with an extended outro. The video will premiere on The Bros. Landreth YouTube channel here.

This project is the second time that the RWB and The Bros. Landreth have collaborated on a special performance. The first collaboration, Next of Kin, was created for 2019’s Ballet & the Band and was similarly enriched by music from The Bros. Landreth.

“Evangeline Gentle's voice communicates an aching warmth that comes with knowing hardness and choosing softness instead. I didn't know anything about them before this self-titled debut, produced by the great Jim Bryson, and every time I listen to the record, I'm blown away anew by their songwriting and the space they're carving out across multiple genres — indie pop, alt-folk, singer-songwriter —  in a way that feels effortless” - CBC Music

Today, Evangeline Gentle is sharing the new live video for “Ordinary People”, directed by Rob Viscardis, from their self-titled debut LP. The song celebrates the strength it takes to stay soft in a world that can harden you with a single headline. This August, the LP will be released on vinyl via Sonic Unyon.

Produced by Jim Bryson at his Stittsvile studio Fixed Hinge, Evangeline’s self-titled debut album makes for a powerful introduction to this Peterborough-based singer/songwriter. “Drop My Name” champions the voice of someone no longer willing to be taken advantage of. “Sundays” is a sweet and honest exploration of insecurity in our romantic relationships. “Neither of Us” and “Long Time Love” are love songs for the modern world while “So It Goes” is a nostalgic retelling of teen summer love. “Even If” and “Digging My Grave” are less lighthearted tracks that share vulnerable truths about depression, drinking and recovering from self-sabotaging habits. “Good and Guided” is a hopeful closing song to this LP uniting listeners with the question “How do we become good and guided by the heart?”.

Recently, Gentle also shared an acapella EP titled You And I with two tracks, “You And I” and “Black Is The Colour”. The EP serves as an introduction to the emotional warmth and dynamic power of this emerging singer-songwriter, as well as a mirror held up to humanity's unique historical moment.

“‘You And I’ is the preludial a cappella opening song of my live show, and its message seeks to unite audiences with a sense of ‘sameness’,” says Gentle. “I believe that our deepest connections are found through vulnerability which is why I feel compelled to sing this track completely unaccompanied.”

“Black is the Colour” is “a traditional Scottish folk song that I first heard as a child growing up on the North East Coast of Scotland,” says Gentle. “Despite moving to Canada at age 11, my love for Celtic folk music persists and performing this song feels like sharing another bit of who I am.”
