Today, Heaps are sharing another new track from their upcoming LP, What Is Heaps, out August 28 via Birthday Cake. “You Were There” is an attempt to “understand and process fear,” says vocalist Warren Frank. “Can we ever move past our insecurities if we won’t first acknowledge them? The song works to navigate the dynamic that creating and performing music can bring about. Can one be authentically vulnerable when they know an audience will be receiving their work? How can one prepare themselves to handle the flippant negativity that can so easily come from those who care so much less than you? It’s a rally for ourselves. A reminder to abandon self-consciousness and care deeply, whether people are looking or not.”

The video for “You Were There” came about as a result of being a band in COVID-19. “With no shows to play over these last few months, we have had to readjust what the ‘business’ and everyday life of the band looks like,” the band says. “No shows means less income, which means we can’t hire anyone to do video work with us. The inability to hire outside work challenged us to prepare for our upcoming releases in a more D.I.Y way than ever. We looked inward and decided to take on the entire production of the video by ourselves, from directing and filming to editing and colour correcting. The experience has produced a video that we are very proud of and exemplifies what our group is about; collaborative creation. Through making this video we pushed what we thought our group was creatively capable of and will inform our creative process outside of song-writing in a way we likely couldn’t have imagined before.”

What Is Heaps foundations were crafted in a series of escapes: suburban Halifax bedrooms, rural Quebecois disconnection, renovated Michigan church seclusion, and Dale Morningstar's Gas Station on Toronto Island.

Recorded at Union Sound with Leon Taheny (Fucked Up, Owen Pallett, Weaves) and James Bunton (Donovan Woods, For Esmé, Vivek Shraya), the result is an eclectic, rhythmically swelling collection of conversations and questions as observers in uncertainty.

In addition to the new single “You Were There”, the band are also sharing another new zine to accompany the track, just as they had done with previous singles “Hazy Shores”, inspired by the current global situation. “As the song ‘You Were There’ focuses on fear and doubt, the zine released alongside the track serves to highlight specific areas of discomfort experienced by each band-member,” the band says. “The hope is that speaking vulnerably will allow the band to connect with audiences in a new, uncommon way. Use of textural noise and grain, paired with distorted imagery and an infusion of ‘controlled-chaos’ aims to showcase the frantic presence that fear and self-consciousness can impose on the minds of the affected, slowly eroding the thoughts and goals that were once clear.”

Heaps are a collective hailing from the Kawartha Lakes in Ontario, bringing droney, ethereal, punchy art-rock, about time, change and privilege. In another lifetime, the band were known as The Kents. In that collective, they were featured on Hockey Night In Canada, MLB's World Series, 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, Canada’s Walk Of Fame Emerging Artist and earned support from CBC and George Stroumboulopoulos. Through their travels, they shared stages with Sloan, The Sheepdogs, The Trews, The Strumbellas, and Hollerado. Their final release Within Waves elevated them beyond 5-million Spotify streams.

Today, Canadian 8-piece collective, Busty and the Bass, announce their new album Eddie, out August 14, their first for Arts & Crafts. Along with the announcement, the octet releases one of the album’s centerpieces entitled “Go So Far”, featuring Slum Village’s Illa J and XXL Freshman Class selection Jon Connor. The track is a shining example of the ensemble's effortless ability to blend funk, soul and hip-hop together with hypnotic vocals that create a striking soundscape. “Go So Far” follows the recent release of album cuts “Baggy Eyed Dope Man (ft George Clinton)”, “Kids”, “Clouds”, “Summer”, and “Out of Love (ft Macy Gray)”, which was accompanied by remixes by Ouri (Ghostly) and Harrison (eOne).

The octet of Nick Ferraro [vocals, alto sax], Evan Crofton a.k.a. Alistair Blu [vocals, keys, synths], Scott Bevins [trumpet], Chris Vincent [trombone], Louis Stein [guitar], Milo Johnson [bass], Eric Haynes [keys, piano], and Julian Trivers [drums] recorded Eddie over three uninterrupted weeks Montreal with Grammy-nominated producer and sonic guide Neal Pogue (Tyler The Creator, Outkast, Anderson .Paak). The group also teamed up with Earth, Wind & Fire legend Verdine White who serves as the executive producer of the album.

Eddie sets out to answer the questions ‘What advice would you impart on that younger self? And if you could pass your younger self a mixtape, what would it sound like?’ The resulting 12 tracks set nostalgic and vulnerable lyrical ruminations against a soundscape of simmering soul, fiery funk, spirited rock, hypnotic hip-hip, perennial psychedelic funk and artful R&B. The character of Eddie stands in as a representative for the group’s collective past identity but far from a concept album, he serves as a common thematic thread tying the songs back to those central questions.

Nick says of the album’s central message, “The album is a bunch of songwriters talking to this fictional kid and reassuring him, ‘You may be young and going through some shit, but this is for you. It will all work out.’ We made the mixtape we would’ve wanted and needed at that age.” This can be heard in the big, piano-driven "Kids", which helps to reassure its listener that things get better, while the upbeat "Out Of Love" provides confidence to face a broken relationship head on. The title track "Eddie" is a humbling call to hold on to your inner-child and "Clouds" speaks to the clarity that will always supersede the storm.

In addition to packing houses on headline tours, including recent SOLD OUT shows at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom and LA’s Troubadour, they graced the stages of international festivals such as Made in America, Osheaga, Pinkpop, Montreal International Jazz Festival, The Great Escape, Ottawa Bluesfest, and Rifflandia, playing alongside the likes of Radiohead, Anderson .Paak, and Lana Del Rey.

Today, Kalle Mattson and Andrew Sowka’s new duo, summersets, is sharing another new track from their upcoming EP, “More Less”.

"More Less”, lyrically, is “one of the two characters from Small Town Saturday looking back on their relationship, their hometown and themselves with the perspective of time,” says Mattson. “It was the last song we wrote for the EP and there’s probably more of ‘me’ in there than any of the other summersets songs up until this point. I know I was definitely working through a lot of my feelings about my career as a musician and all of that can bring after ten years of doing this thing."

The 6-song EP Small Town Saturday started out as an experiment in writing character-based songs for Mattson and acts as the first chapter in a larger full-length album. “I had the idea of writing a song that tracked a relationship from the very beginning of two people meeting, to everything in between, until one of them passes away. That first song I wrote for this project, “Never Love Another”, then became the idea for the entire album. I just wanted to keep writing about these people and stay in this world.”

The 29-year old Mattson first gained public attention by writing the Polaris Music Prize nominated 2014 album Someday, The Moon Will Be Gold, that dealt with the death of his mother who passed when he was 16 years old. It was during the recording and touring of that album that Mattson and Sowka began their longtime musical collaboration. “The whole summersets project came from a place of desperation and inspiration. After my last solo album, I felt so beaten down by the music industry, but once Andrew and I began writing and singing these songs together I was so energized by the process, making music was fun again.”

Produced by frequent collaborator Jim Bryson (Kathleen Edwards, The Weakerthans) throughout 2019, the trio quickly conceptualized and recorded the sound for the new project, each song taking no longer than a couple of days to finish. "We were trying not to overthink anything; just trying to chase a warm, lush production, and taking a page or two from the late-60s early-70s singer-songwriters we really love” says Sowka. The end result is a sunny and often upbeat record that is highlighted by Sowka’s melodic harmonies blending seamlessly with Mattson’s voice.

All the songs on Small Town Saturday play out like a series of vignettes, each one exploring a different moment in the two characters small-town world and relationship. We hear the first flickers of desire and a foreshadowing of what is to come in “Fake Flowers”, which then progresses into the lovers fleeing their small town fate, even if just in dreams, in “Anywhere You Go” - ‘If we never come back home, I’ll follow you anywhere you go’

The story of the album is highlighted by the centrepiece “Never Love Another”, which outlines the relationship from its first phases, through marriage, life struggles, forming a family, finally up to the last moments of one half of the partnership’s life. The album concludes with one character writing to the other on the wistful “Still” - ‘If tomorrow never comes, and our dreams are left untrue, if the whole world falls apart, there will still be me and you’.

This project is both the musical start for Sowka and Mattson and also the start of a multi-part story to be told over the course of a larger collection of songs. As the two sing on “More Less” : ‘Some nights when I remember the two of us way back when, cigarettes and soft Septembers, the more beginning the less we end’.
