Recently, Yukon Blonde have shared their first music of 2020 with the new single “Get Precious” which has already climbed to #2 on the CBC Music Top 20 and is rapidly climbing up the Top 20 at the National Alternative Radio Chart in Canada. Today, the Vancouver band shares another new track, “In Love Again”, which sees keyboardist / vocalist Rebecca Gray take over on lead vocals for the first time.

"This track began as a fun experiment when we were jamming,” says Jeff Innes. “We were trying to have three or four separate melodies that when played together sounded nice, but didn’t make much sense when apart. I came up with the melody and lyrics, pacing the parking lot of our space and as usual hummed it into a voice memo on my iPhone. I had the idea knocking around my head to write a love song that detailed the simple day to day aspects of a newish relationship, normal things you value once you’ve been through the ringer.”

“The moment I had the melody in my mind, it reminded me of classic French pop and Rebecca instantly came to mind to sing it; then I thought about all of those wonderful 60’s and 70’s duets from that time, (and recently too - Cate Le Bon and Broadcast come to mind) and the song began to take shape.

We ALL love this song. It’s a really sweet ode to honest love without irony, which is typically not in our nature. Not to mention, we have our very talented Rebecca making her debut lead, which just makes this extra special to us."

With four LPs to their name, including 2010's self-titled debut, 2012's Tiger Talk, 2015's On Blonde, and 2018’s Critical Hit, Vancouver indie alternative outfit Yukon Blonde, rounded out by Graham Jones, Brandon Wolfe-Scott and James Younger, have cemented their status as a Canadian powerhouse, earning comparisons to The Flaming Lips and Phoenix, delivering a welcomed throwback to the 1970's glory days of rock'n'roll.

Watch for more new music from Yukon Blonde later this summer.

FIGURE WALKING’S NEW LP, VERTICAL / HORIZONTAL, OUT SEPTEMBER 11, 2020 VIA DISINTEGRATION RECORDS

“Drawing on dub-oriented grooves and flashes of serrated post-punk guitar stutters, there’s an exchange of wiry and rhythmic, which works to console the tension of political and social commentary, deliberately setting the tone for you to get up and move.”- Beatroute Magazine

Today, Winnipeg’s Figure Walking are sharing another new track from their upcoming album, Vertical/Horizontal, out September 11 via Disintegration Records. On the new song, “Mr. X”, Greg MacPherson notes : “Arnold was a grizzled old man who worked odd jobs in West Broadway ten or so years ago; shoveling snow, loading trucks, fixing lawn mowers - physical work for cash. He had an air of menace, a brooding impatience, his movements were deliberate and economical; his mental energy seemed focused elsewhere, perhaps on containing a part of himself that no longer fit in the world. I got to know Arnold editing a community newspaper that he contributed to. He wrote a series of crime stories, cautionary tales from his own life, terrible things he had done, shared with equal parts regret and amazement. He swore that every word was true, and wrote under the pseudonym 'Mr. X' to avoid reprisal from law enforcement and former criminal associates. Arnold died in 2011, his obituary confirming many of his stories, and revealing that he was in fact much younger than we assumed. Years of hardship and hard living, years of being Mr. X.”

The new video for “Mr. X” was shot and edited entirely on MacPherson’s cell phone over a 72 hour period in July. It tells the story of Mr. X, a bank robber played by Figure Walking’s new bass player Al Gardiner, who MacPherson picks up while hitchhiking; a man playing a broken system; someone capable of greatness and of great tragedy.

Rob Gardiner, Figure Walking's drummer and The Detective in the video, has a Masters degree in Cinema Studies and he says this video is “actually pretty good.”

Based in Winnipeg, minutes from the geographic centre of North America, Figure Walking makes music that is at once unmistakably local (fighting through the isolation and limitations of what is essentially a mixed up, outpost town) and reflective of the complex lives being lived beyond the horizon.

Recorded in Montreal and Winnipeg, the band’s second album, Vertical/Horizontal paints a colourful portrait of a beautiful world spiraling through the heartache and mystery of late stage capitalism. As ever, MacPherson’s storytelling pulls the curtain back and offers an up-to-the-minute report; characters fighting the law, crossing the Canadian border into North Dakota, born on a holiday, living with tragedy and winning in style.

Vertical/Horizontal marks MacPherson’s tenth studio album as lead and principal songwriter, and fourth collaborating with Gardiner. Figure Walking has shared bills with a wide range of artists, from Mike Watt + The Missingmen to the Hold Steady, Father John Misty to The Beaches. This music is anchored by MacPherson’s underrated guitar playing and trademark universality but it is Gardiner’s physicality and post rock sensibility that give Figure Walking an uncommon musical aesthetic. Figure Walking’s previous record, The Big Other, was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize.

Singer, songwriter, and producer Charlotte Day Wilson returns today with two new tracks -the velvety love song “Take Care Of You” featuring Syd and the effortlessly sunny “Summertime”. The Toronto native melds soul, jazz, and R&B to create atmospheric upbeat ballads that breathe warmth and intimacy into contemporary pop. Her first offerings of 2020 a prime example, Wilson’s latest continue to entice and expand her sound and catalog, setting the tone for more to come.

Charlotte on the singles: “'Take Care of You' was one of those songs that came really naturally and quickly, the lyrics were impromptu & the music was simple. I just wanted to write the sort of lesbian love song that I would want to listen to. Syd was the best possible addition, we both felt it was a song that needed to be heard. I wrote 'Summertime' at my cottage alone in the woods, I was just reflecting on some unrequited emotions that always seem to come back in the summer.“

Growing up in Canada, Wilson studied classical piano and the practice of active listening - specifically Jazz with her parents in the living room of her childhood home. As a teenager, she taught herself how to produce using Garageband and she took her first stab at writing lyrics on her debut self-released EP Palimpsest in 2012. Her early work highlights her nonconforming sound melding elements of folk, soul, jazz and hip-hop. After a short time in school, she left the program to pursue her career in music - soon after collaborating with the likes of Kaytranada, Daniel Caesar, and BadBadNotGood, before releasing her second EP in 2016, CDW. The lead single from CDW“Work” earned press acclaim from the likes of  NPR, Teen Vogue, The Fader, W Magazine, and nominations for the 2017 SOCAN Songwriting Prize and the 2017 Polaris Music Prize. In 2018, Wilson released Stone Woman a 6-track EP that charts the collapse of a relationship. Upon release, Stone Woman earned recognition from The Fader, Harpers Bazaar, Pitchfork, and went on to be nominated for both the 2018 Polaris Music Prize and a 2019 JUNO Award for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. Wilson’s most recent release “Mountains” (co-written by the legendary Babyface and featuring background vocals from Daniel Caesar) is a gospel-infused soul-stirring track that chronicles a declining love.

Wilson’s contemporary take on R&B and Soul showcases her sublime vocals and her ingenuity as she fuses vintage basslines, gospel assonance, and contemporary minimalist production to create a strikingly beautiful sonic aura. Stay tuned for more to come.
