Today, Austra (Katie Austra Stelmanis) is pleased to share a new India Jordan remix of “Risk It”, the song that launched HiRUDiN earlier this year. Jordan adds their trademark joyful piano stabs whilst looping Katie’s unmistakable vocals, managing to balance the tenderness of the lyrics with a rave-ready sentiment.

While Austra’s third album, 2017’s Future Politics, was concerned with the external power structures that shape society, HiRUDiN points inward, tracing a deeply personal journey towards regeneration, dealing with the fallout of toxic relationships, queer shame, and insecurity along the way. Named after the peptide released by leeches that is the most potent anticoagulant in the world, HiRUDiN is about the importance of healing the self, letting go of harmful influences, and finding the power to rebuild.

Vancouver-based soul-Americana artist Frazey Ford will be performing at The Commodore Ballroom as part of Live Nation’s “Live From Inside” streaming series. The performance will be broadcast live in North America on September 26 at 9pm ET / 6pm PT, and will be rebroadcast on September 27 for Europe and the UK. Out now via Arts & Crafts, throughout U kin B the Sun Ford seamlessly inhabits an entire world of shapeshifting rhythm, elevating every beat and groove with the subtle magnetism of her mesmerizing voice as she examines pain and loss telegraphed through a prism of unfettered joy. To that end, “U and Me” takes the unlikely form of a tenderly enchanted breakup song, while on the anthemic single “The Kids Are Having None Of It”, Ford responds to the toxic political climate with an irrefutable bold sense of assurance. With its graceful collision of soul and psychedelia and sometimes ’70s funk, it’s a body of work that invites both self-reflection and wildly joyful movement, and ultimately sparks a quiet transcendence.

Recorded at John Raham’s Afterlife Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia, featuring her Vancouver musicians Darren Parris, Leon Power, Craig McCaul, and Caroline Ballhorn, along with Phil Cook on keys, U kin B the Sun follows Ford’s 2014 release Indian Ocean, an album made with members of legendary Memphis soul band The Hi Rhythm Section. U kin B the Sun partly draws inspiration from several instances of serendipity that transpired during her international touring in support of Indian Ocean—including playing separate rooms in the same venue as D’Angelo one night in Holland, which eventually prompted her 2017 cover of the iconic neo-soul singer’s “When We Get By”.

This Friday, Figure Walking – drummer Rob Gardiner (Conduct, Pip Skid) and Canadian independent music stalwart Greg MacPherson (baritone guitar, vocals, keys) – will release their new LP, Vertical/Horizontal, via Disintegration Records. Today, they share the new video for album track “Colourful” which “is a kind of weather report; projecting a bitter cold front ahead of vicious winds, heavy ice and freezing rains,” says MacPherson. “There's a violent storm overhead, some of us are hiding under our houses or huddled near a load bearing wall but there are many who seem convinced against evidence that all will be well.”

In the video for “Colourful” MacPherson says “Three true believers navigate modernity and late stage capitalism, preparing themselves for a new world; one is a believer in science, the next religion, the third commerce. They grapple with over a hundred years of Winnipeg urban design and then square off with one another in a bizarre post-cultural dance-a-thon.”

Based in Winnipeg, minutes from the geographic centre of North America, Figure Walking makes music that is at once unmistakably local (fighting through the isolation and limitations of what is essentially a mixed up, outpost town) and reflective of the complex lives being lived beyond the horizon.

Recorded in Montreal and Winnipeg, the band’s second album, Vertical/Horizontal paints a colourful portrait of a beautiful world spiraling through the heartache and mystery of late stage capitalism. As ever, MacPherson’s storytelling pulls the curtain back and offers an up-to-the-minute report; characters fighting the law, crossing the Canadian border into North Dakota, born on a holiday, living with tragedy and winning in style.

Vertical/Horizontal marks MacPherson’s tenth studio album as lead and principal songwriter, and fourth collaborating with Gardiner. Figure Walking has shared bills with a wide range of artists, from Mike Watt + The Missingmen to the Hold Steady, Father John Misty to The Beaches. This music is anchored by MacPherson’s underrated guitar playing and trademark universality but it is Gardiner’s physicality and post rock sensibility that give Figure Walking an uncommon musical aesthetic. Figure Walking’s previous record, The Big Other, was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize.
