Donovan Woods is a songwriter adept at magnifying the tiniest moments of human intimacy, and in “She Waits For Me to Come Back Down”, his new duet with Katie Pruitt, they explore the ability of love’s grace to overcome unhealthy imbalances.

Off Woods’ forthcoming Without People full-length album, out November 6, 2020 via Meant Well, “She Waits For Me to Come Back Down” is produced by James Bunton and vocal producer Todd Clark (Dua Lipa, Noah Kahan, Phillip Phillips).

"Katie Pruitt and I wrote this together and it was her idea — a love song for her girlfriend, I think,” says Woods. "I love the mood in this song. It’s lovely and sweet, but steeped in a bit of worry that we may be hearing about a slightly unhealthy relationship. But aren’t all the good ones? A friend of mine told me after hearing it that, “I’m a mess and she’s a masterpiece,” is a line that could only be written by a woman about a woman. I don’t know if that’s true, but luckily that is the case here."

Woods and Pruitt performed “She Waits For Me to Come Back Down” on tour in 2019, and with the audience’s reaction, they knew it had to be recorded for Woods’ album as a duet.

Woods and Pruitt will host a live conversation on Instagram next Tuesday, September 29. Fans can tune-in at 5 PM CT / 6 PM ET via instagram.com/donovanwoods.

As part of the Donovan Woods With People Project supporting independent creators and bridging art and music culture during the pandemic, Woods will share the song’s accompanying video, which features LA-based choreographer/dancer Mackenzie Martin (Missy Elliot, LuLuLemon, Sephora, more), performing an interpretive dance to the song at the Imperial Sand Dunes near the California/Mexico border.

While Without People was created by musicians who were all contributing remotely, it encompasses the most intimate moments of human connection — something most people continue to yearn for more than five months into the current global pandemic.

On the album, Woods showcases his ability to illuminate the importance of tiny moments in relationships – from the innocent, unadulterated first blush of budding love on songs like “Clean Slate” to the complexities of the father-son dynamic on “Man Made Lake” and the appreciation of a lover’s grace in one’s weakest moments on the Katie Pruitt duet “She Waits For Me To Come Back Down". On “Lonely People”, celebrated British singer Rhys Lewis delicately echoes Woods’ sentiments about wanting to be alone – until you’re suddenly lonely.

“This album made me think about how easy life would be without other people, and how useless it would be,” says Woods. “This is what my brain wants to write about, so I suppose my responsibility is to follow it further and further into the most fearsome feelings I’ve got.”

Woods recruits co-writers Tucker Beathard, Ashley Monroe, Barenaked Ladies’ Ed Robertson, Thomas Finchum, and Katie Pruitt to create a lyrically-forward collection of songs bound by themes of the human condition. Long-time collaborator and producer James Bunton (David Myles, Vivek Shraya, Evening Hymns) and vocal producer Todd Clark (Dua Lipa, Noah Kahan, Phillip Phillips) round out the musically diverse creative team behind the album.

“I dove in deeper on this album than I ever have,” says Woods. “So if we are coming to the end of something, I can say that I tried my hardest to write truthfully about the people I’ve loved and the things I did wrong, and add my little verse to the story of what it feels like to be a person.”

For the release of Without People, Woods is committed to supporting individuals in marginalized communities. Woods launched his Humans of New York-esque Donovan Woods With People Project on July 29, championing independent creators from North America, United Kingdom, Sweden, Kenya and beyond across a diverse range of art mediums including graphic design and illustration, painting, dancing and more. Woods is collaborating with the artists from all over the world to create visual interpretations of each song on the record.’ Watch the first illustration created by Toronto-based designer/illustrator Iris Li, here: youtu.be/iwf2RrOsRUI

“Undoubtedly one of Canada's most underrated singer-songwriters, this kind of autumnal, progressive folk is hard to do well (and differently), but is majorly welcome as the country cools off, reflects on a summer gone by and figures out its next steps.” - CBC Music

“The Montreal-via-Calgary explorer of time, space, and his own instincts, is truly in top form on Sundry Rock Song Stock. The multi-layered tunes get way down deep into your mind, curling up to pleasure points like a soulful, psychedelic cat.” Exclaim! 9/10

“On a record that focuses greatly on questioning others’ motivations, the artist not only provides the space for, but rewards that contemplation with kaleidoscopic dreamscapes.” - New Feeling

“Gorgeous … Jarvis’ sound is one of a kind.” – Under the Radar

“His style evokes uncovered recordings from an obscure spiritual retreat, ones that make you believe something transcendent was near when they were made.” - The Fader

“Wispy, wavery, deliberately ambling low-fi psychedelia.” – Jon Pareles, The New York Times

“Different instruments and genres all mix together to create a gently effervescent bliss.” – Bandcamp

On Sundry Rock Song Stock, Yves Jarvis continues to refine his creative approach to the core of his being, where music and life intertwine in harmonious fashion. Out tomorrow via Flemish Eye, this latest album from the Montreal-based musician fuses genre elements into a symbiotic relationship where wistful folk, tender R&B, pastoral prog, and musique concrète experiments feed into one another to grow lush new forms. Though he maintains an air of mystery with his lyrics, Jarvis’s whisper-soft words can be interpreted as both deeply personal and politically motivated in ways we haven’t heard from him before.

Describing the song as “one consciousness!”, today Jarvis has shared a new video for the song “In Every Mountain” in anticipation of tomorrow’s album release.

As a pre-teen street corner busker, some of Jarvis’s earliest performances took place outside. He returned to an open-air environment for Sundry Rock Song Stock’s creation, setting up a makeshift studio to lay down its foundation of guitar, Nord synth, and Rhodes electric piano. Recording on a reel-to-reel tape machine, he experimented with various off-kilter techniques including a softly tapped steel drum drenched in effects, or melodies played on a wine glass meant to mimic a flute.

“I want my recordings to be naturalist, so from that sense I am ideally making them outside,” says Jarvis. “More than a musician or a singer, I’m a producer, and any studio I’m in will become my bedroom. Creation is my life and I don’t compartmentalize it at all.”

This year’s POP Montreal Festival will be taking place online starting next week from September 23 – 27. Yves Jarvis will be performing a streamed set on September 27 at 6 pm ET – watch his set and donate to the festival HERE

HOW DO WE STAY HERE? DELUXE EDITION OUT NOW VIA SLOW WEATHER

"Close Talker, has a way of burrowing deep under the skin.... the band recently unveiled another moody, sweetly impeccable gem in "Half Past Nine." Those bold, chiming guitars are back, this time in aid of a warmhearted rumination on moments we celebrate, romanticize and fight to preserve in our memories" – NPR

"The Change It Brings" is a softly ruminating track that tackles the most fickle theme of them all- time. Rolling over sinuous guitar layers and smatterings of melodic synths, lead singer Will's breathy vocals welcome you in like a hot cup of tea on a winter's day. The track then promptly sits you down and leaves you to reflect on your own memories while it soothingly plays the soundtrack to your mind. – Earmilk

“A song like "Half Past Nine" shows why the band has found success, it's full of heart and nostalgic longing for moments that have passed but have made a lasting effect for the better.” – The Wild Honey Pie

Today, Close Talker are sharing the mysterious new video for “Second Best”, which can be found on the recently released deluxe version of How Do We Stay Here?, out now via Slow Weather.

“We bounced around a bunch of ideas for the ‘Second Best’ video, at different points we were going to book out a baseball stadium, explore a forest, remake an 80’s aerobics video… but nothing really landed 100%,” the band says. “Then one day Matt tossed out ‘well, I had this idea of a guy getting kidnapped over and over, and something feels strange about where he’s being taken.’ There it was.”

Filmed and edited by Dale Bailey and starring Motorbike James in the lead role, “Second Best” brings an aspect of mystery and confusion, just like all Close Talker videos. “‘Second Best’ is no different,” the band says. “Dale captured this discovery so wonderfully. He balances the darker, mysterious aesthetic with humour and it makes for a perfect visual for the song. No spoilers, watch til the end.”

The Saskatoon three-piece has toured throughout North America and Europe, and has gained the attention and praise of notable publications such as NPR, Billboard, Clash, Spin, Q Magazine, and Consequence of Sound. The band works tirelessly on evolving every aspect of their craft, which has led to their strongest and most confident album to date: How Do We Stay Here?.

In so many ways How Do We Stay Here? marks a new chapter for the band. The three members leaned into the trust and foundation built over countless years of friendship to pursue a record that would be sustainable and timeless for them. Choosing to self-produce allowed the band to hold this album close to their chest while it developed organically over the course of 2018 at RMS Labs in Regina. Close Talker, now more than ever, is interested in music that is timeless - music that won’t force the listener into feeling a certain way. To achieve this, the band approached each song following a code of instincts and honesty, including a list of 10 commandments by which all decisions were filtered through. How Do We Stay Here? is a testament to the band’s integrity and a desire to produce music that is original and pure. It is an album the band wrote for themselves, in hopes that the songs would carry the same meaning in 10 years, as they do today.
