"Set to a slow-burning backdrop of symphonic rock, Cash sings about gentrification and isolation with pained subtlety, as if Toronto were slowly squeezing the life out of him during every take" - Exclaim!

"like these songs are being played in the middle of a group hug from the people who fight with you everyday for a better life." - Dominionated

“On This City, Sameer Cash is vulnerable as a person, and as a musician stunningly and achingly on point.” - Canadian Beats

Sameer Cash has announced a 32 page adult colouring book, accompanied by snapshot narratives written by Cash himself. 100% of profits will be donated to The Black Solidarity Fund and Sistering. The ‘This City’ colouring book maps the progress of gentrification through Toronto as seen through the eyes of Cash’s younger self. Through images of landmarks, scaffolding, construction sites, and buildings that have played a key role in Cash’s upbringing, Cash tells the story of his Toronto through the migration of buildings, from the old city to this new one. The colouring book, while a perfect companion piece to his acclaimed debut album, also forces a bit more energy out of the reader, causing them to think about their relationship with ‘place’ and ‘home’.

Of the book Cash says, “it took us months to put this together, and as far as ‘artist’ merchandise goes, this is a pretty in depth and thought out piece of art. The fact that the whole thing has been a non-profit endeavour has really brought together a lot of community support.” Cash collaborated with 11 visual artists in the city, all who donated their time, and contributed one illustration to the book. Along with written pieces accompanying each image with nostalgia or contemplation, the ‘This City’ colouring book is a great way to support some communities in Toronto and Canada as a whole, while also being a great way to take your mind off the impending lockdown. Designed by Raven Shields, pressed by Colour Code Printing, 100% of the profits go to Sistering, and The Black Solidarity Fund.

MORE ABOUT THIS CITY LP

Written in between bar shifts and soundchecks and recorded in a garage behind a Chinese restaurant in downtown Toronto, produced by Matthew Bailey, engineered by Chris Stringer (Timber Timbre), mixed by D James Goodwin (Kevin Morby, Craig Finn) and mastered by Philip Bova Shaw (Feist, Andy Shauf), This City is the result of the kind of heartbreaking, and redemptive work that compels us to be better.

Sameer Cash was raised on a diet of Rock & Roll records and Hindu fairy tales. His father, born to a large Catholic family in Scarborough, Ontario, left the suburbs to follow the ungovernable religion of 1980’s post-punk. Cash’s mother, born among the mango trees of Kenya, by way of India, clung to her own upbringing through childhood memories and her mother’s cooking, seeking comfort and closure through many Canadian Prairie winters. Cash was born into an amalgamation of communities, converging at the point of least resistance: music (his father wrote and toured the world in various bands from the 1980’s to 2010’s, and his mother became a music manager, now in the industry for the past 30 years).

These threads of identity are embedded in the delicate and powerful 9 songs that make up the debut album from Sameer Cash. This City is an album about family and place, about friendships and how they get frayed. ‘When it gets too much, stay in touch with your mother and your high school band,’ he sings near the end of the album.

There are intimate moments of quiet fortitude (“Driveway Moment”, “Easily”), rollicking blasts of glory (“Stay In Touch”, “Paralyzed”), and honest narratives on life and work in the city – a genre Cash has christened “gentrification ballads” (“This City”, “$3000”).  This City is an ambitiously understated album that’ll soak you in melancholy and leave you out to dry in the sun.

Steven Wilson has announced details of a completely unique special edition of his forthcoming sixth album, THE FUTURE BITES

ULTRA DELUXE MUSIC PRODUCT ON OBSOLETE MEDIA will retail for £10,000. All proceeds will go directly to the Music Venue Trust to directly help save grassroots gig venues in the UK.

ULTRA DELUXE MUSIC PRODUCT ON OBSOLETE MEDIA represents the insane peak point of modern consumerism while offering one fan the ultimate Steven Wilson collectable.

Never done before and never to be repeated, it is a hugely enhanced version of his already brilliant new record that provides an insight into Steven’s working process. The ultimate aspirational product, it proves that if music is an ongoing conversation between artist and fan, this 1 of 1 edition of THE FUTURE BITES is less mass email and more like the closest thing you’ll get to an in-depth discussion with the artist over an intimate dinner date for two.

Inside ULTRA DELUXE MUSIC PRODUCT ON OBSOLETE MEDIA bespoke box are the contents of the already announced deluxe box set of the album alongside music unheard anywhere else, conceptual artwork, hand-written lyrics and items of personal ephemera from Steven Wilson’s archive. It includes:

  • One sided 7 inch single with unique track “THE TASTEMAKER” - an edition of one, never to be released anywhere else

  • Unique laptop bag used in “EMINENT SLEAZE” video

  • THE FUTURE BITES test pressing

  • “EMINENT SLEAZE” test pressing  (with b-sides “EYEWITNESS” / “IN FLORAL GREEN”)

  • “12 THINGS I FORGOT” test pressing (with b-sides) “MOVE LIKE FEVER” / “KING GHOST (TANGERINE DREAM REMIX)”

  • CDR of unreleased 2016 soundcheck performance of a cover version never otherwise performed live

  • Steven Wilson's Grammy nomination certificate and medal from 2011 for Grace For Drowning - best surround sound mix

  • Printed materials used in the “EMINENT SLEAZE” video

  • 6 x laminated AAA passes for various tours between 2011-18

  • Polaroids from THE FUTURE BITES cover shoot photo session

  • Original drawing by Hajo Mueller of Steven Wilson

  • Handwritten lyrics with corrections for various songs between 1996-2020:

    • “Count of Unease”

    • “Follower”

    • “Eminent Sleaze”

    • “Salvaging”

    • “Veneno Para Las Hadas”

    • “Personal Shopper”

    • “The Raven that Refused to Sing”

    • “Dark Matter”

Steven Wilson: “This edition of THE FUTURE BITES takes the whole notion of deluxe limited editions to its logical and fairly extreme conclusion, as the ultimate limited edition will obviously end up being just one copy. In many ways, this edition is more analogous with the world of art than with those of music or luxury branding. Only one person can own an actual painting with the artist’s brush strokes on it. There is no variance, only the one original.

“With regards the contents of the 1 of 1 edition, it’s the purchaser’s choice as to whether they decide to share what they’ve bought or keep it to themselves. Do they want to exhibit ‘the painting’, or put it on display at home? If it was me, I’d probably keep it private but I’ll leave it entirely up to them as what they do with the contents of their purchase.”

All proceeds from the sale of ULTRA DELUXE MUSIC PRODUCT ON OBSOLETE MEDIA go directly to the Music Venue Trust to help save grassroots venues across the UK that have been affected by COVID 19. For Steven, those are the kinds of venues he spent his formative years playing.

“The first Porcupine Tree show was in The Nag’s Head in High Wycombe and, for the first ten years the band played live shows, we gigged solely in that subterranean world of clubs and pub venues. As someone who doesn’t really exist within the mainstream, this is the stuff that really affects me. I wouldn’t be sat here with any sort of career in the music industry if it weren't for those venues and - just as importantly - the people who make them work night after night.

“The loss of venues in this country feels like a big part of my history dying. If you try to imagine the world without live music, you know immediately it would be a terrible place. Music is a connector, it’s an inspiration and it’s a healer for so many people. It’s essential we work now to save these places for future generations of bands and fans.”

Beverley Whitrick, Strategic Director, Music Venue Trust adds, “Artists and grassroots music venues are intrinsically linked and MVT has been delighted by the many and varied ways in which artists have responded to our calls for support to #SaveOurVenues. Steven's project is thought-provoking and unique. We are grateful for being involved.”

A new track from THE FUTURE BITES is online everywhere now. “12 THINGS I FORGOT” is a confessional; admissions of neglect mapped out over a piece of soaring guitar music so gloriously uplifting it threatens to leave our stratosphere and keep going. “12 THINGS I FORGOT” is the fourth track taken from the album, following “PERSONAL SHOPPER”, “EMINENT SLEAZE” and “KING GHOST”. It is available online everywhere now.

All formats of THE FUTURE BITES will be released on January 29th 2021.

“Still Thinking About You” Video Still

Last week, Mike Edel released his new album, En Masse via Pennant. Today, he shares the new video for album track “Still Thinking About You”. About the video, Edel says, “in the 'before times' I assembled a cast of friends together to shoot a music video for ‘Still Thinking About You’. The En Masse project was so collaborative, and in our isolated era it has taken on a new form. The 'Still Thinking About You' video reminds me that I am an extrovert and reminds me that I love seeing all my family, friends and supporters when touring an album. I'm so happy that I got a bunch of my Vancouver friends and made this video with them. To them I would say; I love you, I miss you, I’m Still Thinking About You.”

Mixed by Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, The National) with additional production by Andy Park (Noah Gundersen, The Head And The Heart), En Masse is an item quest about discovery. The collective instincts, intuition and melody of a cast of collaborators. “The writing, recording and production were guided by the collective instincts, intuition and melody of a cast of collaborators,” says Edel. “With this project I wanted to bring in outside ideas and methods to help me formulate a new energy and because of this, En Masse has expanded my artistic capacities.”

The new LP follows up Edel’s Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie) produced 2019 record, THRESHOLDS. After THRESHOLDS, 4 million cumulative streams across major platforms, landing a song on ABC’s American Idol, in heavy rotation on CBC Music, AAA Radio across the United States, and on Sirius XM’s The Verge and North Americana; after playing hundreds of shows across North American and Europe including Rifflandia Festival, Vancouver Folk Festival, Regina Folk Festival, Victoria International Jazz Festival, and Upstream Music Festival; after sharing the stage with Serena Ryder, Foy Vance, Said The Whale and Josh Garrels; and after moving to Seattle, WA and getting married, Edel has established himself as a creative tour de force with plenty on the horizon.
