Kiwi Jr. is sharing an official video for “Waiting in Line”, a new offering and highlight from Cooler Returns, their forthcoming album. The video was directed by Laura-Lynn Petrick and captures a day in the life of the band in their homebase of Toronto, Ontario.

"We like the candid and casual approach of director Laura-Lynn's previous videos, including Weyes Blood, Jessica Pratt, Michael Rault, Twist, and she was excited by our idea to wander around downtown Toronto while it was something of a ghost-town." says singer Jeremy Gaudet.

Buildings burning in every direction; macabre unknowns in your friendly neighbour’s basement; undecided voters sharpening their pencils: under pressure we could call Kiwi Jr.’s Cooler Returns “timely.” But what year is it, again? On their sophomoric smash-up released world-wide by Sub Pop Records, Kiwi Jr. cycle through the recent zigs and looming zags of the new decade, squinting anew at New Year’s parties forgotten and under-investigated small town diner fires, piecing together low-stakes conspiracy theories on what’s coming down the pike in 2021. Put together like a thousand-piece puzzle, assembled in flow state through the first dull stretch of quarantine, sanitized singer shuffling to sanitized studio by streetcar, masked like it's the kind of work where getting recognized means getting killed, Cooler Returns materializes as a sprawling survey from the first few bites of the terrible twenties, an investigative exposé of recent history buried under the headlines and ancient kings buried under parking lots.

Not so long since their debut Football Money in archaeological time, unending gray eons later in the dog years of quaran-time, spiritually antipodean Canadians Kiwi Jr. return to disseminate this year's annual report to the shareholders, burying the incriminating numbers in the endless appendices of a longform narrative record, a 3,000 word tract for stakeholders to pore over.

Cooler Returns - memories of Augusts past, unrepressed and transcribed fast - go down easier thanks to meaningful changes enacted in 2019’s KiwiCares Pledge: delivering on a promise to transition from Crunchy to Smooth by 2021, the caveman chug of Football Money has been steamed and pressed with the purifying air of a saloon piano - operated with bow-tie untied - and a spring green side-salad of tentatively up-tempo organ taps and freshly fluted harmonica.

A chronically detuned spin of the dial through swivel-chair distractions and WFH daydreams, an immersive ctrl-tab deluge cycling through popular listicle distractions like the unentombing of Richard III, or the deja vu destruction of the Glasgow School of Art, Kiwi Jr. sing this song to an indoor audience, crisscrossing canceled, every other prestige distraction source wrung dry, only songwriting remaining to deliver engrossing tales to the populace, just how I imagine it worked in the old days. Fixing loose ingredients into a sturdy whip, Kiwi Jr. beam in live from the 9-5, striding into 2021 with a mastered brainwave that comes equally from the back room of the record store as the penalty box. And how do we, left holding this box of deliberate entanglements, sign off to those as yet uninitiated, undecided, uncertain, unseen, absent return coordinates -  Best Wishes, Warm Regards, Good Luck? Cooler Returns, Cooler Returns, C o o l e r  R e t u r n s !

For Canada buyers only, the first 200 LP copies available on Bandcamp will be on white vinyl. Kiwi Club Records will be distributed to Canadian stores via Fontana North.

Kiwi Jr. Cooler Returns has seen praise from the likes of MOJO, who in its four-star review, raves, “sustaining momentum near-flawlessly across 13 songs…proves Kiwi Jr. have the skills to match their smarts." Uncut says, “Canadian absurdists’ return is a lyrical delight”, DIY offers this, “The band rattle through a seemingly inexhaustible supply of hooks and melodies (4/5).”, and NARC proclaims, “Cooler Returns is a bloody good album full of vivid charm (4/5).”

As for “Cooler Returns,” the album’s title track, it spent 3 weeks in the U.S at #1 on the commercial alternative specialty chart. Additionally, Kiwi Jr. has also seen international airplay from The Current, WFUV, WFMU, WFPK, Music Choice, KRCL, KRCC, SiriusXMu, SiriusXM “The Verge,” Rodney Bingenheimer on SiriusXM’s “Underground Garage,” WKQX, KTCL, 91x,  WDET,  WLUM,  KDHX, KJEE,  KPNT, KROX, KACV, WEQX, WPYA, WQRR, KXRN,  KBRE, KBUU, BBC Radio 1, BBC 6Music, CBC 1, CBC 2, Indie 88, X929, X100.7 and The Best Show with Tom Scharpling.

PRAISE FOR KIWI JR.

"the East Coast-via-Toronto band return cooler than ever with 13 more tightly wound pop-rock tunes that combine Pavement's lackadaisical wit with complex song structures and razor-sharp technical proficiency" - Exclaim!

“A scratchy post-punk jam with some seriously funny lyrics.” [“Cooler Returns”] - Stereogum

“The latest glimpse into their 2021 debut album, “Undecided Voters” is an upbeat indie rock song filled with layers of social commentary woven under the seemingly random surface of the lyrics.” - PASTE

“Very catchy and very timely” [“Undecided Voters”] - Brooklyn Vegan

“As we prepare for perhaps the most theatrical and gladiatorial political debate in history, ‘Undecided Voters’ is simultaneously extremely funny and painfully prescient.” - The Line of Best Fit

“On paper, the lyrics of Kiwi Jr.’s ‘Cooler Returns’ reads like a mildly anxious stream-of-consciousness that careens from an uncomfortable Super Bowl Sunday to being “strung out on the back of your ATV / throwing dead birds into the air”. But the song’s also a jangly, indie rock earworm that’ll lodge itself in that part of your brain that loves Pavement.” [“Cooler Returns”] - NME

THE WEATHER STATION CELEBRATE THE RELEASE OF IGNORANCE WITH FULL BAND PERFORMANCE OF THE ENTIRE ALBUM ON FEBRUARY 11 AT 8 PM CST. TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE

“Tamara Lindeman has taken her sound widescreen, as heard on the jazzy art-rock deconstruction of “Robber” or the steady krautrock pulse of the aching “Tried to Tell You”” - Exclaim!

““Robber” contorts and pops with an art-house, freestyle jazz, its angularity softened by Lindeman’s deeply humane lyrics.” - CBC Music

“[‘Robber’ is] the most dynamic and captivating music from her project as the Weather Station yet . . . Fiona Apple called for bolt cutters in the spring; Tamara Lindeman has brought us a sledgehammer for the fall.” - Pitchfork, Best New Track

“[‘Robber’ is] a creeping, powerful meditation on all sorts of systemic social ills. . . she embraces a sound more akin to the spacious and vaguely uneasy compositions of Talk Talk, allowing her music to more effectively take up big, billowing questions.” - New York Times

“A remarkable reinvention, evolution, self-reevaluation? Whatever it is, the spectral disco that underlines The Weather Station’s ‘Robber’ breathes a new consciousness.” - NPR Music

“[‘Robber’] marks a whole new sound for Lindeman, one based in tension-building jazz rhythms and disembodied saxophones and slow-then-all-encompassing melodies. . .  it is, frankly, an incredible song." -- Stereogum, #1 Best Song of the Week

The Weather Station - project of Tamara Lindeman - reveals a new single/video, “Atlantic”, from her forthcoming album, Ignorance, out February 5th on Next Door Records. “Atlantic” follows “Tried To Tell You” and “Robber,” both of which have received glowing praise, including Pitchfork and Paste deeming the latter one of the best songs of 2020. “Atlantic” furthers Ignorance’s sophisticated turn in sound, bursting with urgent percussion, flutters of woodwind and strings, and Lindeman’s cool voice. The song finds the narrator prone on a cliff, watching a sunset as frightening as it is beautiful, “blood red floods the Atlantic.” In the accompanying video which visualizes the song’s quiet terror, we once again see Lindeman adorned in her mirrored suit, though this time, she is front and center surrounded by her full band performing in the dimly lit woods. She aimed to capture the intensity of the band in a traditional music video performance video, but in such a way that it subverted the form in mysterious ways.

“Trying to capture something of the slipping feeling I think we all feel, the feeling of dread, even in beautiful moments, even when you’re a little drunk on a sea cliff watching the sun go down while seabirds fly around you; that slipping feeling is still there, that feeling of dread, of knowing that everything you see is in peril,” says Lindeman. “I feel like I spend half my life working on trying to stay positive. My whole generation does. But if you spend any time at all reading about the climate situation circa now, positivity and lightness are not fully available to you anymore; you have to find new ways to exist and to see, even just to watch the sunset. I tried to make the band just go crazy on this one, and they did. This is one where the music really makes me see the place in my mind; the flute and the guitar chasing each other, wheeling around like birds, the drums cliff like in their straightness; I love the band on this one.”

Through Ignorance, Lindeman has created a novel sonic landscape for The Weather Station. It is sensuous, ravishing, as hi-fi a record as Lindeman has ever made, breaking into pure pop at moments, at others a dense wilderness of notes; a deeply rhythmic and painful record that feels more urgent and clear than her work ever has. The natural world is everywhere on this record, intruding with force and poignancy.

Ignorance marks Lindeman’s first experience writing on keyboard, not guitar, and her first time building out arrangements before bringing them to a band. It features an impressive crew of musicians, including Kieran Adams (drums, percussion), Ben Whiteley (bass), Philippe Melanson (percussion), Brodie West (saxophone), and Ryan Driver (flute). The band was rounded out by Johnny Spence (keys) and Christine Bougie (guitar); Lindeman played piano, sang, and contributed distorted guitar solos. Montreal producer Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire) co-produced, with Lindeman, and also mixed the record.

The lyrics across Ignorance roil with conflict. “I used to be an actor, now I’m a performer,” Lindeman says. In those roles she often finds herself to be the subject of projection, reflecting back the ideas and emotions of others. In turn, the album cover shows Lindeman laying in the woods, wearing a hand made suit covered in mirrors. Throughout Ignorance, she sings of trying to wear the world as a kind of ill fitting, torn garment, dangerously cold; “it does not keep me warm / I cannot ever seem to fasten it” and of walking the streets in it, so disguised and exposed.

The Weather Station will present a full band performance of Ignorance in its entirety on Thursday, February 11th. Tickets for the livestream are available here.

LOWELL SHARES LOVELORN POP BALLAD “GOD IS A FASCIST”

"irresistible pop hooks" - Rolling Stone

“Los Angeles by way of Toronto ascendant pop star” - Week In Pop

Los Angeles/Toronto based singer-songwriter Lowell has had a unique journey from dropping out of college and working as a stripper to finding her footing as the go-to songwriter for platinum selling pop stars (Hailee Steinfeld, JoJo, Demi Lovato, Lennon Stella, Charlie Puth). She has freshly earned double platinum (“Not A Love Song” by Bülow) and gold (“Selfish” by Madison Beer) certified plaques with a new solo body of work on the way.

Lowell recently released the soulful singleLemonadeand today she delivers new single “God Is A Fascist”, a moody ballad with her signature poetically brazen lyrics and universally relatable subject matter for these isolating times. Pivoting from the pop world where she has found great success, Lowell chose to present these songs how they were written, in their most essential state and most simple essence.

Lowell shares, “This song is very near and dear to me. Written at a low point in both my career and my relationship, it's simply about feeling like you belong together and being forced to be apart, which I think a lot of people can relate to at the moment. Some people might feel a bit offended by the title, but it really isn't this anti-religion statement. It's simply a symbol of the helplessness I was feeling in my life at the time- that feeling like life is laid out for you whether you like it or not. Interesting fact- most of the song actually came to me in a grocery store in Burbank, CA while I was squeezing avocados. Another interesting fact- Burbank was on fire.“

After leaving stripping and escaping a manipulative manager, Lowell was tapped by producer Martin Terefe to create her debut EP featuring collaborations with members of Coldplay, A-Ha and Mew. The EP caught the attention of indie label Arts & Crafts, who released her 2014 debut which prominently addressed her feminist politics and time spent as a sex worker.

Continuing her multidisciplinary artistic trajectory, Lowell co-wrote Bloodthirsty, a 2020 Canadian horror feature film about a young vegan indie singer, who finds herself turning into a werewolf under the pressure of recording her anticipated second album. The film features several new songs, including “Lemonade”. It was accepted into Frontieres at Cannes and premiered at both Fantastic Fest in Austin TX (the US’s biggest genre fest) and Fantasia in Montreal (only 10 films accepted world wide).
