“Autumn Rain” Video Still

Today, Slow Leaves (Grant Davidson) is sharing the new video for “Autumn Rain” from his recent album, Shelf Life out now via Birthday Cake. "Autumn Rain” is about “not sweating the small stuff,” says Davidson. “Easier said than done. We shot the video on an old analog camera in homage to television performances from that era."

Known for his ability to breathe poetry into the ordinary, Slow Leaves continues his deep exploration of the self with Shelf Life. The 10-track LP leans into themes of romantic memory, domestic duty, artistic ambition, and dreams unfulfilled, underpinning the belief that there is indeed great strength in vulnerability.

Rooted in reflections on time, Shelf Life is a record about growing up to realize you are not the person you thought you would be. It is a collection of songs that wades between tides of past and present, success and failure, things lost and things found. The result is a collection of musical vignettes, woven together by the loose threads of a tangled life.

Recorded mostly live off the floor, Davidson teamed up with Rusty Matyas (Weakerthans), Damon Mitchell (New Meanies), and Rejean Ricard (Telepathic Butterflies) to bring the album to life.

The release of Shelf Life follows Davidson’s critically acclaimed works Enough About Me (2017) and Beauty Is So Common (2014), both garnering heavy rotation on CBC Radio 2. The Winnipeg Free Press described Enough About Me as “a gentle breeze of exquisite playing and keen observations that will reward listeners again and again and again.” The album also garnered Davidson a nomination for a Western Canadian Music Award.

“I just want my songs to be super authentic and address shit that all young people deal with.”

Each song from 19-year old artist Charlie Houston is an emotional timecapsule with relatable self-discovery storytelling and breathy, androgynous vocals evoking the captivating immediancy of contemporaries Empress Of, King Princess, Faye Webster, and Charlotte Day Wilson

Freshly signed to Arts & Crafts, the genre-bending artist has announced her debut I Hate Spring EP due out April 23. Lead single “Calls'' premiered by Zane Lowe on his Apple Music 1 show today. The song’s accompanying video debuted alongside a SPIN Magazine “A Day in the Life” feature.

Though Charlie‘s studies at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU was short-lived due to a bout with severe anxiety, that period inspired two standout EP singles: “19”, a track about managing those mental health struggles with reckless behaviour, and “Calls”, a song about the unwanted dissolution of a long distance relationship.

Throughout the collection, Charlie bravely bares her personal struggles such as mental health issues, romantic heartbreak, first kisses and discovering the fluidity of her sexual identity along the way. Working with producer Chris Yonge, I Hate Spring features five downtempo pop tracks infusing progressive electronic sounds with raw, melodic guitar and pop-R&B vocals. The poetic lyrics intentionally do not include pronouns because the beautifully crafted stories are authentically relatable to any listener.

For over two decades, Polaris Music Prize longlisted electronic duo LAL (comprised of Rosina Kazi and Nicholas Murray) have built a catalogue of silvery, internationally-influenced electronica that insists that the dancefloor remain a place of resistance. In the process, they’ve become the backbone of Toronto’s sprawling DIY scene, nurturing and propping up a multi-generational group of artists.

Recorded in the early months of 2020, Meteors Could Come Down finds LAL looking inward, examining the intricacies of their own relationship to understand how to provide care to their community. Experimenting with minimalism and a concise inventory of sounds, the album explores for the potential for open space offered through drums and voice—dually centering on the richly dynamic textures of Kazi’s vocals and Murray’s skilled ear for world-building through silvery synths and drum beats—to hold a great deal of emotive weight.

It advocates for a complicated kind of hope that’s only available when the end feels near: that’s at times slow and grating; confusing and confounding; and urgent and breathless. On Meteors Could Come Down Kazi and Murray capture a lofty anticipation that’s uniquely available to artists who have long been on the frontlines of radical change: hope for the energetic transformation into a new world.

Their 7th album, Meteors Could Come Down captures the spirit of a season fueled by a moment of pause that stoked the embers of revolution. Inspired by road trips along the coast to radical DIY arts scenes in Oakland and Olympia, and Adrienne Maree Brown’s bestselling book Pleasure Activism, Meteors Could Come Down is both their most minimal, and intimate, album to date.
