“Undoubtedly one of Canada's most underrated singer-songwriters, this kind of autumnal, progressive folk is hard to do well (and differently), but is majorly welcome as the country cools off, reflects on a summer gone by and figures out its next steps.” - CBC Music

“The Montreal-via-Calgary explorer of time, space, and his own instincts, is truly in top form on Sundry Rock Song Stock. The multi-layered tunes get way down deep into your mind, curling up to pleasure points like a soulful, psychedelic cat.” Exclaim! 9/10

“Lush … sprawling … intoxicating” – Afropunk

“written from the soul in an inscrutable and endearing sonic language.” - The Fader

“fluid, soul-inflected folk—like if Toro y Moi produced early Iron and Wine.” – Pitchfork

Montreal-based singer-songwriter and producer Yves Jarvis has shared the soft yet swirling new song “Projection” today. He filmed the song’s new video on an iPhone, printed out each frame and then carefully scanned each shot to create a flip book effect.

Including lyrics in both English and French, the song is a "rickety rejection of dogma, tumbling tenaciously toward the tip," Jarvis said.

At the end of 2020 Jarvis released his third album, Sundry Rock Song Stock. The album fuses genre elements into a symbiotic relationship where wistful folk, tender R&B, pastoral prog, and musique concrète experiments feed into one another to grow lush new forms. Though he maintains an air of mystery with his lyrics, Jarvis’s whisper-soft words can be interpreted as both deeply personal and politically motivated in ways we haven’t heard from him before.

As a pre-teen street corner busker, some of Jarvis’s earliest performances took place outside. He returned to an open-air environment for Sundry Rock Song Stock’s creation, setting up a makeshift studio to lay down its foundation of guitar, Nord synth, and Rhodes electric piano. Recording on a reel-to-reel tape machine, he experimented with various off-kilter techniques including a softly tapped steel drum drenched in effects, or melodies played on a wine glass meant to mimic a flute.

“I want my recordings to be naturalist, so from that sense I am ideally making them outside,” says Jarvis. “More than a musician or a singer, I’m a producer, and any studio I’m in will become my bedroom. Creation is my life and I don’t compartmentalize it at all.”

Sundry Rock Song Stock was a critically acclaimed release and included on many editorial end of year lists, including The Fader’s 50 Best Albums of 2020, Gorilla Vs Bear’s Best Albums, Pitchfork’s 35 Best Rock Albums and the track “For Props” was featured on Paste’s Top 50 Songs of the Year. “Sundry Rock Song Stock is a strange yet satisfying sensory experience,” Paste explained. “Its bubbling, offbeat sounds tickle parts of your ear that you didn’t even know existed, and his tantalizing vocal tones also scratch a pressing itch.”

In 2006, Strippers Union released their debut LP, Strippers Union Local 518, and then followed it up with The Deuce a short five years later. Now, nearly a decade later the band is ready to share their third LP, The Undertaking, a double LP recorded at The Bathouse Studio with drummer Pat Steward and bassist Doug Elliott.

Why so long a wait between albums? “These last 10 years have had their share of unexpected twists and turns,” says Baker in a full essay on the new album which can be read here. “Suffice it to say that my life was in upheaval. My lifelong dream, which was embodied by The Hip, had come to a sudden and very final end. It was, oddly, both profoundly sad and fulfilling, and it left a void for me. What was I to do now? With my dream done and my sense of personal identity badly shaken, I began the process of trying to figure out what I might do with the remainder of my life. I descended into my home studio and applied myself to the one thing I can count on to keep the demons at bay, which is songwriting and recording. Apparently there were more demons than I realized, and before long I was overflowing with demos… more than 50. Originally I thought I would include an album's worth of personal tunes with a book that I'm writing about my misadventures and shared laughs in The Hip...and I may still do that, but it struck me that a lot of these tunes were Strippers Union material.

I convened with Craig in the spring of 2018 and began playing him demos that I’d accumulated over the past year or two - songs which I felt might be SU contenders. We nailed the lyrics and melodies for five tunes in three days. Over the next 18 months we had three more writing sessions as well as exchanges of ideas through Dropbox. By the start of 2020 we were up to 18 tunes. Initially my plan was to use my bass lines and programmed drums - I’d spent a lot of time getting them right and I was pretty proud of the work - my ego wanted to see ‘all instruments played by Rob Baker’, but my better judgement told me to give Pat Steward and Doug Elliott a crack at those parts. These guys have been playing together so long that they are a well tuned machine - ruthlessly efficient and tasteful. I headed to North Van with my hard-drive in tow and spent three days in Craig’s Doghouse of Thunder Studio with Pat and Doug nailing down the bass and drums on 18 tunes in three days!”

Why a double album…why make an album at all? “Excellent questions,” says Baker. “A double album because I really like this batch of tunes and feel that it is an eclectic set that covers a broad expanse and represents our diverse interests. We didn’t do it for you - we do it to please ourselves. I've always operated under the assumption that I am not special or unique - so if it's something I like, then there are lots of others who will like it as well.

I'm proud of these songs. I’m proud of the work. When we were young we wanted to conquer, to be respected and adored. Time marches on. These songs reflect who we are now - a little less bravado and a little more restraint, less inclined to thrash and more inclined to find a little truth, a little meaning, and to revel in the little pleasures.”

With Ariel Posen’s latest single, “What Are We Doing Here” currently climbing the CBC Music Top 20 charts, today, the acclaimed songwriter and guitar player is sharing another track from his upcoming album, Headway. Co-written with long-time friend Alexa Dirks (aka Begonia), “Now I See” was inspired by "my own personal growth over time but more specifically by a friend that had once told me that ‘now they could see’ that everything was left behind them,” says Posen. “They were struggling with some relationships and some severe personal issues and it took time, but they finally found acceptance in themselves and were able to move past it. Just because they weren't the type of person that they thought they would be, and just because someone isn't perfect, doesn't mean that they don't belong. Sometimes the smallest realizations and changes lead to gigantic breakthroughs and in the theme of the album, makes significant Headway."

Ariel Posen's music occupies the space between genres. It's a rootsy sound that nods to his influences — heartland rock & roll, electrified Americana, blue-eyed soul, R&B, Beatles-inspired pop — while still moving forward, pushing Posen into territory that's uniquely his own. He turns a new corner with Headway, a solo album that finds the songwriter taking stock of his personal and musical progress.

Posen began recording Headway in December 2019, one week after wrapping up an international tour in support of his acclaimed debut, How Long. He'd been on the road for a year and a half, playing shows across the U.K., Europe, America, and his native Canada. Along the way, Posen had received standing ovations not only from his audiences, but also from outlets like Rolling Stone, who dubbed him "a modern-day guitar hero," Music Radar listing him as a fan voted top 10 rock guitarist of the year and the Western Canadian Music Awards who nominated him for Breakout Artist of the Year. "

Coming back home to Winnipeg, he began sifting through the new songs he'd written between tour dates. Many of them had already been tested on the road, their arrangements whittled into shape by a group of road warriors at the top of their game. Practically all of them were about the process of evolution — of making progress in life, love, and all points in between. Those themes were reflected in the music itself, which presented a crisper, clearer picture of Posen as a songwriter. If How Long had been his introduction to the roots-music world, then Headway was something  different: a sharply-defined snapshot of a musician who has truly crystallized his sound.

Like its title suggests, Headway is all about growth. Already celebrated as a frontman, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, Ariel Posen hits a new high-water mark with his second album — an album that prioritizes songwriting above all else, showcasing the progress of a lifelong musician who's still in the middle of an upward trajectory.

PRAISE FOR ARIEL POSEN

“I couldn’t believe it when I heard Ariel’s record. I knew he was a great guitar player, but DANG IT....he’s really really good....I also didn’t know how well he could sing or write songs. There’s so many bangers on this record, but “Fade” is for sure my favourite!” — Cory Wong (Vulfpeck)

“Ariel Posen is guitar’s man for all seasons - he’s got the songs and the voice but he’s also a stellar slide guitarist with a gutsy, expressively melodic style” — Jamie Dickson (Guitarist Magazine UK)

“Posen is a rare breed of guitar player. He has managed to meld a keen sense of theory and half a centuries worth of influences into a unique style that is all his own.” — Michael Lux (Reverb.com)

“Individuality is the centerpiece of Ariel’s sound. His wizard-like slide chops and razor-sharp songwriting skills have helped him find a singular voice that continues to combine innovation and inspiration.” — Jason Shadrick (Premier Guitar)

“Ariel Posen is one of the most toneful and tasteful players to emerge in recent years – miss out on his new album at your peril!” — Chris Vinnicombe (The Guitar Magazine UK)
